2talltim
My old 12 year old dell finally crapped out. I don't need anything special just mild web searching, OR, FB, youtube and of course porn. What id like to have is windows 7, dual core processor, and a decent size screen wif is a must. What I don't want windows 8 or vista, chrome book, netbooks, shity viedo playback. And when I say cheap, im ok with referbs and semi outdated stuff. Like to get in the $200 range. Any input suggestions or comments are welcome. Here is one I seen on microcenters site.. http://www.microcenter.com/product/427998/ThinkPad_X61_121_Laptop_Computer_Refurbished_-_Black Edited March 17, 2014 by 2talltim

Tonik
Search ebay for them. Look for a vendor that is selling a bunch of the same kind of machine. They are lease computers that got turned in. Bought several good Dell's that way.I got Uday Hussein's laptop, but it isnt for sale.

The desktop we have was bought there as a referb and its been the best one ive ever owned for only $
RVTPilot
For the love of Christ just don't get an HP. And you might luck out on some Win8 machines as they have an option to downgrade to Win7. But I can tell you from test driving a machine with 8.1 that you can make a couple settings alterations and get it to function closer to 7 than metro mode. Ive also hear folks say the same about Dell but i only reason my old one crapped out is because it had a dead spot in the screen(due to me dropping it) and ive been flicking at it or smacking it for the last couple years to make it work and tonight i smacked it a little too hard and spider webbed it, just not worth putting a $80 screen in a 12 yr old purputer in my opinion. I think most computer are as good as their components and 90% of the builders use the same crap anymoreI was reading up on the Win7 downgrade and yea sounds like you can do it to all of them Edited March 17, 2014 by 2talltim
2talltim
I have a cheap mini laptop for salei remember seeing that but im not really a fan of the atom processor, my wife had one for school and it always ran hot and played videos like crap. I sold it when she graduated due to that.
Bad324
I'll be honest, never even used it other than once for 5 mins to fire it up and make sure it worked
Tonik
Yea, 8.1 is pretty nice. Big update coming in April to make it nice.

max power
Stay away from the Celeron processor.

jporter12
While I typically detest HP, their Probook line is pretty decent, and you can get some good deals on refurbs at Microcenter. I'm not much of a fan of the Celeron, or even the Pentium Dual cores, either.
granda080
My work laptop is an HP Probook. It's pretty decent. I haven't had any issues or complaints about it.
Tonik
We have 2000 HP's at work, probably a hundred of them are laptops. We have been HP for 10 years. We are very happy.
smccrory
And 8 looks like it sucks, I'll stick with 7.After much resistance I installed 8.1 yesterday and although there are things about it that piss me off, it's proving to be a relatively smooth change so far. 2talltim
Like I said I think brands make little to no difference they all use the same components.I agree with the Celeron being crap they are basically built to be a value line processor anyway. I'm probably going to sit down tonight and decide which one at micro center I want and have my wife pick it up on her lunch hour tomorrow. 2talltim
Went with some recommendations and got a Toshiba and went against some(including my own) and got a Celeron and Win 8.1, here is the one I got on hold.. http://www.microcenter.com/product/428324/Satellite_C55-A5190_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Satin_Black_in_Trax_Horizon minus the dislikes it was the best bang for the buck. At least with it being a new one vs. refeb I get a 1 yr warranty and the abilty to return it if im not happy. The wife is going to pick it up for me tomorrow and ill get to play on Thursday, thank for all the help and PM's. 2talltim
Getting to play a little bit tonight and the windows 8.1 isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The apps are kinda weird but you don't have to use them. if you go to the desk top it is just like Win 7. everything seem to run smoothly so far, ill give it a week or two before I decide if i'm going to keep it or not, ive got 14 days. 2talltim
Had it over a week now it is doing everything i need it to and doing it well. I do have a quick question for you puter nerds. I usually run a defrag when my computers start getting slugish, would it help of hurt if i ran a derfag before i got to that point I just want to keep this machine running like it is now.
