Columbus Racing? Who actually goes racing?

As I read the posts here every day I often wonder who actually GOES racing. I don't mean a blip here and there on the street but who actually does National Trail or other drag strips on a regular basis.

OR, any other type of racing... round track, dirt, road racing, truck pulls too.

Tell us what you do.

I'll start:

Been drag racing with my son in his 89 Fox GT for three years at National Trail... we run mid to low 12's in his street car. Now building a NASA road car for Mid Ohio this year.

Thanks, Ron

Been going to Trails since about 97'. Haven't gone as much as I now have kids, etc....family time and all. Went there with my GXP twice last year. Will likely go again a handful of times this summer.

Also did AutoX a few years back with my Accord. That was more fun actually, but the cost of tires for my GXP would be huge and I have other things that put that down on the priority list. That's good and bad I guess

Most of us have been out to Trails, and some have even attended a Norwalk track rental a time or two. I personally don't race for points or anything. I mainly just go to beat the piss out of my car on occaision, Friday Night fights style.

I have been known to run everyonce in awhile on the street as well.

I sit in my drivers seat and stare at the rest of my car, wishing it was back together so I could drive it.

:funny:

I've been back into autocrossing the past couple years and even took my Laser down the drag strip just for the hell of it last year too!! When the budget allows I'll be joining you on Mid-Ohio.

I've been racing at Trails either solo or with my dad since the late '70s. I still track race a few times a year in various vehicles, occasionally street race although not much anymore since I have a family and a job that requires a valid license :)

I'm thinking about trying my hand at a road course this year.

As for smartass Brian up there, yes, this is a racing site that has also become more of a community for like-minded people talking about pretty much off-topic anything :p

The wife & I drag, her in her '97 GTP, and I in either my '01 GTP or '88 Tempo. I'd love to take a turn around a road course, maybe summer of '07. I have yet to see an Autocross event here, wouldn't mind trying it just for shits & giggles, because I like cutting turns.

Drag race mine or other cars, plus tuning and building of them, at trails, norwalk, marion, kilcar, etc.Getting the ODRA going is what some of us are focused on this year.

I started racing at 16 in a 69 Dart(chassis car),It started as a stock motor car with a cam and bolt ons and my first pass was a 12.34. I raced the car for @ 5 yrs and modded it until it was a Super Gas car. I then started racing bikes at NHRA division 3 events, and have been to Indianapolis raceway park for division 3 finals from NTR 3 times. I have tried to race my TA in Jegs et points series but multiple 10 bolt failures in semi final rounds makes you lose interest. I finally have my car within a few mods away from being a street driven reliable bracket car. I am trying to race Et points again this year once the auto gets put in,I just dont see a t-56 holding up to a 1.3x-1.4x 60 fts.

I started out racing matchbox cars on a closed course back in the early 80's. from there I moved up to BMX. I got out of racing for a bit in the 90's and started skate boarding. In 2002 I got on a road course and now that's where I try to get to as much as possible. Though I'm pretty much out on the Friday and Saturday night, like everyone else.

Started autocrossing Camaros & then Firebirds in '77

Crewed for IMSA GTU Porsches late 70's-early 80's

Still autocrossed - Formula Ford, then a F2 Brabham w/ a V6 swap

Crewed for Playboy/Escort Showroom Stock endurance series in the 80's (300ZX)Crewed and drove at The Longest Day of Nelson after the SS series died out (Fiat X1/9, Datsun 240Z, Nissan 300ZX, VW Golf)

Crewed for a few Pro Rally events (Audi 4000 quattro)

Road raced for a few more years on and off (ITB Mustang)

Now, full circle, back to autocross, and trying to bring a few younger drivers along!

You've been driving longer than I've been alive!!! :D I hope I can list off that much racing experience when I'm older, sounds like you've had(and still having) a lot of fun.

I have been drag racing since 86. Around 94, I did a few auto-crosses up until 97. Since then I have kids(one 7 and 8) and they take a lot of time. I am trying to get back into the autocross scene. I love drag racing(street type of cars, FAST series) but there are too many cars that are faster than my BB vette and mustang, so I am looking into finese. I still work on my own cars and work on others when I find time or need more $$. I work on vettes(older) and do body work etc. I went to my first NASA race last year at Mid-Ohio and I think this might be the direction I am heading toward.

Looks like a bunch of us want to do some closed course driving... ANYBODY can with just your daily driver.

Start to do the research at http://www.nasaproracing.com

There are four or five road courses within a four hour drive of Columbus. Each have different programs but NASA is where you should start.

If you want to do some track time, or run Time Trials in your daily driver look on the left column of their home page and read "HPDE/Open Track".

If you want to get more serious and do a racer, go through the "NASA Forums" in the right column. I'll be running a Mustang in "American Iron" but there are plenty of other classes listed there.

They have a STOCK class (racing door to door) called CMC (Camaro / Mustang Challenge) that you could run with very little investment... actually only safety gear, extra pads and tires. This is a GREAT way for a couple guys to get together and go racing. Later, the same car could easily (built motor & suspension) move the the American Iron racing class.

At the bottom of the "NASA Forums" is a For Sale section.

First school and HPDE in '07 is late April at Mid Ohio. I plan to be there.

Ron
