Well if you read the article, its not that the smoke harms the computer, but that the technician is working with "hazardous material". If you smoke you will find more dust bunnies inside your case if you happen to open it. Also dust bunnies that build up on the fans can cause the fans to not work properly or stop working all together. This = more heat. Heat = damaging hardware.
