Ohio Historical plate Law question.

Well here is what I want to know, does this apply to model year or year that the car was produced. As most cars are built the year before they are sold as model year. So exactly how old is a 1987 car?

ahaha the state goes by the model year not the build date and it needs to be 25 years old before you tag it historic

damn i could have sworn that it was 20 years for those plates. o well 2018 for the RX-7

They have changed the law. Because 2 years ago I had all the paper work for my camaro ready to go to get the tags. It used to be 20 years.

 

And there are 2 types of plates. Historical and Model Year.

 

Historical License Plates

 

 

 

General Information:

To qualify, motor vehicles must be at least 25 years old. They are solely collector's items and are used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, etc. They are NOT for general transportation.

 

Registrant Eligibility:

These plates may be issued to any Ohio motorist. The vehicle must be 25 years of age or older. It is a collector's vehicle used in participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, but NOT for general transportation.

 

Title Requirements:

Ohio Certificate of Title issued in individual's name, either singly or jointly, or the name is the same name on the lease agreement.

 

Vehicle Information:

These plates may be issued to any vehicle.

 

Type of Plates:

Stock, reserved, or personalized plates inscribed with the words Historical Vehicle Ohio (personalized plates may now contain up to seven characters). Model Year Plates are also permitted.

 

Issuance Information:

Applicant must complete BMV Form 4806 (affidavit).

 

Cost:

There is a one-time fee for historical plates. The fee is determined by ORC 4503.181.

Historical Model Year License Plates

These plates may be issued to any Ohio motorist.

 

Title Requirements:

Ohio Certificate of Title issued in individual's name, either singly or jointly, or the name is the same name on the lease agreement.

 

Vehicle Information:

These plates may be used on any vehicle.

 

Type of Plates:

Registrant provides his/her own plates which must be servicable and legible and issued by Ohio and inscribed with the same year when the vehicle was manufactured.

 

Issuance Information:

Applicant must complete BMV Form 4806 (Affidavit For Registration) and Model Year Adffidavit BMV Form and submit a copy of the model year plate(s).

 

Cost:

There is an additional fee of $3.54. The fee is determined by ORC 4503.181.

The interesting thing about model year plates is that you only have to run a rear plate.

 

One other thing to remember is how the state looks at what is considered "general transportation". If you use your historically registered car for transportation to work, school, shopping hauling lumber home(trucks) or anything that isn't pleasure or club, show, cruise related you are in violation. An evening cruise just to enjoy the car is ok too.
