Ford Focus. Easy to work on, pretty reliable, safe as far as I know, and best of all cheap! Get her a ZX3/ZX5 since they look cooler. I had one for my first car 8 years ago and sold it to a buddy in 2004 and he's still driving it to this day.

There are a couple nice ones for like $2500 on CL now...http://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/1857734867.html

If you do get a Grand Am make sure the 2.4 has only used reg oil and it has been changed out reg. The 2000-02 Grand AMs with the 2.4's can only use the 2000+2.4's and they cost 6-900 for a used engine since it was only used 2 years. Just FYI

Subaru AWD > FWD

Thorne beat me to it but I was going to say an old Subaru. Doesn't have to be an Impreza but maybe a Legacy or Forester. I am thinking some thing 1992 to 1999. They will run forever and as Thorne said AWD is tuff to beat with a set of good tires. Plus even the older models have good crash test ratings.

I can't search CL while at work but on my phone I found a couple of cars under your 3K limit and they looked 'ok'.

My daughters first car was a 95 325i 4 door it was a great car. She drove it for a couple years with zero problems untill it got totaled. She now drives a 97 jeep grand cherokee and she loves that thing, bought it 2 years ago.. Both were very nice shape with average miles for under 3000.00. 98-99 nissan altima's are great cars also .

to those who say older BMWs, 100% spot on...heres my dad's old 93 325i i wrecked when i was 18. lets just say fast speeds + just starting to rain + a curve = bad

my buddy was behind me, watched me flip it/roll it. into the woods, landed on the roof. i literally unbuckled my seatbelt and crawled out. tiny scrapes on my knee (had shorts on), but no broken bones, no cuts that even needed a bandaid. sore back for a couple days from gettig jerked around was it...

i think ive posted these before...car saved my life. i dont think i would have walked out of anything else with the same crash.

Evan I dont know if thats a testimonial to BMW saftey or the fact that you werent in the passenger seat.

whats crazy is i was supposed to have 2 people riding with me that night (this was back when everyone used to meet at krogers on broad), and they decided to take their car up to the meet. lucky them.

Same car I got when I turned 16. Power windows/moonroof. Heated drivers seat. AM/FM stereo. Cruise control. Tilt wheel. Awesome gas mileage and parents paid I think $1500 for it. Loved that car.

...too bad it burnt to the ground first year I had it. :)

Im fairly certain you could find Legacy that would be perfect for all your needs.. Those motors last forever.. they do get fender rust, but nothing that you cant combat easily, decent gas mileage and afaik, anything newer than 96 has always had top crash test ratings..
