No one is buying the regular one, what makes them think this one will sell?

More FIATs sold in recent months than Coopers.

And the reason this one will sell? 170ish HP (tune in to find out exact #s, I don't even know them yet) and 2000 lbs = obscene fun.

what price will the abarth run?

I have no clue. They've claimed they won't reveal it at the launch event, and that they're only debuting performance and on-sale date specs, but I'm hopeful that they'll at least give dealers pricing info.

edit: my educated guess (based on performance estimate of 170hp) would be starting price around $22k, though my gut tells me it'll be closer to $26k and it'll have better performance.

I have several friends who have purchased a 500... They are selling tons of them from what I can see. This one should move as quick.

...the 500 will not sell the hoped-for 50,000 units in North America...

50k/year means 4k/month average and they haven't done that in any single month.

They are not selling as well as they expected them to, and their price is too high considering the compact cars that can be had for far cheaper, or the civic/elantra/golf size cars which are about the same price, and provide a much larger car.

Those numbers are misleading. Those numbers include all models, so its FIAT 500 and 500C versus Mini Cooper/S/JCW, Clubman/S/JCW, Convertible S/JCW, Coupe, and Countryman.

FIAT is absolutely behind their prediction, but no one actually thought they'd do 50,000 in year one. The slow rollout of dealers up til this point has hurt us, as FIAT didn't jump start their ad campaign until nearly 100 Studios were open.

I most often find myself competing with $25-$30k cars, and I honestly wouldn't have it any other way. The fact that people looking at a Rav4 or a Chevy Cruze or similar cars consider the FIAT 500 the ONLY small 2-door worth a look I think says volumes about the car and the brand. Its easy to compare spec sheets and features and say that a Fit or Yaris gives you more stuff for your dollar, but until you actually get out and drive every one of the cars (as Clay has done, and I very much respect his opinion of the FIAT vs other cars), you're unable to grasp what a unique combination of features, driving experience, and the panache that the FIAT represents.
