2012 Road Cycling thread

Figured I could get this started now...took a trip down to Venice, FL last thursday, stayed til monday. rented a road bike down there for $85 (weekly rate), took my pedals, saddle, they threw them on the bike for me, and off I went.

I really wanted to get close to 300 miles in the 5 days, but I knew that was a really tall order, especially since I haven't ridden in ~3-4 months up here.

First day, I did a 58 mile route (my mapmyride app didn't track the route for some reason...still kinda pissed as it was my longest route)...that was a mistake...I rode with the wind for the first 29 miles, and into it pretty much the whole way back. legs were super sore when I got done. No elevation to worry about down there, but that wind is no joke.

43.48 mile route - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/71313298

I'm ready for it to be warm enough to get out up here. Picked up my new ride a few weeks ago, a 2011 Cannondale CAAD8 6, Tiagra components, more than enough for my riding. It fits me (56cm vs old bike was 60cm), and its about 7-8lbs lighter than my old bike. If my work schedule stays as it is now, I'll be able to get out after work during the week, as well as most weekends (weather allowing), and be able to do 1500-2000 miles this year.

(and ignore that rear wheel below...i put the wheel off my old bike on to use on the trainer since the tire is pretty trashed already...didn't want to burn up the good tire that came on the bike)

Cool. Well I bought another bike, actually the same bike I sold earlier this year.

Don't have many road goals this year as it is mainly training for me toward cross and mtb racing. Probably do my first century.

Evan, did you buy that Cannondale from Mike Murphy?

bought it from bicycle one in Gahanna.

I'll be trying to do at least 3 centuries this year...i know i'll be riding Pelotonia 100 mile route on the Chase team, but i'll probably ride with a few friends of mine for the majority of the ride...im thinking if i can train enough, i just might sign up for the 2 day ride and do 80 the next day...we'll see though.

I'm excited. Still on my Giant Cypress, not up with the big boys yet. My poastor is a HUGE cyclist. Did 7K miles last year. Just stupid. LOL

I'll be riding Pelotonia again this year. With my weight loss riding the 23 mile route last year was a big goal of mine and I crushed it. I'm ready to go further.

I cant wait for Pelotonia! If I can get 2k in donations by July 9th then I will be changing to the 180. If not I'm going for the 100.

If you guys feel like helping me out then click away! My Pelotonia profile.

34mi route Mike (SRTmike08) and i rode today. New bike is AMAZING compared to my old bike...was able to keep it in the large ring all day, even riding UP one of the nastier hills around hoover dam. Was an awesome day to get out. Hopefully i can get some more seat time in this week after work.

Yea sure was a fun ride. Not riding this winter was a bad choice. Evan was kicking my ass. I am gonna have to work my ass off to get back to were I was last year.

Ibuprofen and PB&Js are the best after ride meds ever! lol

If the weather holds up we should go for a ride on Thursday.

Decent first ride of the year for me. Here are pictures of the bike rack i made. All 316SS and only cost me $20 for the shoes off craigslist. I wanted some thing that i chould open the tailgate on my Saab, very low, and no chance for the bike to hit my car.

I like i said on the ride we can make something Evan. I still have some other tubing in many differnet sizes.

Alright biker boyz, I've been wanting to pick up a bike for a couple years now...I just always find an excuse not to. I haven't had a bicycle since before I got my drivers license, but I live within 2 miles of where I work. It's getting really hard for met to justify not getting some exercise in, and wasting gas letting my car warm up for the vast 2 mile trek every morning. I'm weary of buying a purpose "road" bike, because I'd like the option of going through shit if need be. Like I said, I haven't had a bike since before I was 16, so I know NOTHING. What would you guys recommend? Also, I'd rather not break the bank on this...if possible.

No, they cited me claiming i was "overtaking on the right", even though i was pacing traffic that was going thru the light i was about at the cars rear bumper on the right when the intersection came up, he/she didnt signal and started to make the turn, i couldnt get off the drop bars and onto the brakes quick enough when i realized the car was about to turn, and they pretty much side swiped me and i landed in front of his/her car. Landed on my hip/ass which hurts like hell, smacked my head on the ground...amen for a helmet, even if it was a cheap $50 one, it did its job...otherwise as hard as i remember hitting it, it might be a different story right now...i'll defintely be fighting it though. I was as far right as possible where i belong, had he/she signaled a turn, i would have yielded and let them make the turn then went on.

I havent seen my bike, cop said the rear wheel was trashed, and my moms boss who lives near by picked up the bike, claims the frame/front wheel is fine, but i doubt it...pisses me off as that bike was barely a month old.

Got transported to riverside, as st anns was full, got xras, cat scans, they think i have a concussion, bruised ass/hip/whatever, small bit of road rash on my shin. Not as bad as im sure it could have been, and definitely not like the movies..
