New project, my first bike!

So the rx7s are gone. After over a year or so of trying to sell them multiple times, they are finally gone. I traded them yesterday for an 87 sportster. This is my first bike ever and I will be learning how to ride on this bike. I dont know too much about this type of stuff but, it is a little rough in some areas so Im just gonna tear most of it down and repaint, clean, and repair everything before getting it on the road. Im pretty excited and Im thinking it will be a fun learning experience. The overall plans is going to be making it a little more on the rat bike/ bobber style. Im going to paint the all the sheet metal matte black, wrap the exhaust, and remove a few things to give it a more minimalist look. On the mechanical side, it runs extremely rich and has a larger aftermarket carb on it so Ill probably try rejetting whats on it or go back to a stock carb since im not too worried about power at this point. Its also got a few minor wiring issues and a cracked front rotor. Well heres some pics and please dont mind the messy ass garage, its getting cleaned up and organized today.

On the jack and tear down has begun.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff241/mx3onfalkens/IMAG0015.jpg Heres the cut headlight/ turn signal wiring which is an easy fix.

Ill post up more soon. Im looking to gather some more parts before I get too much further into it. Ill be going back to stock grips. And Im thinking Id like forward controls for a little added comfort.

If anybody has any stock parts or knows anybody with some, Ill be looking for a trans cover, carb, possibly wheels since the finish on these is messed up, and front rotor which he said was a from a dyna.

Any advice or input is appreciated since I dont know anything about bikes.

Ill have more torn down today. The paint is alot rougher than the pics show. Ive got a paint gun and will probably buy one of those dupont "hot rod black" kits just to get it all murdered out on the cheap side.

You need to get in touch with flat tire (Josh) on here. He is a GM for the Harley dealership up north and can get you stupid good prices on bike parts. Being as it as an official HD dealer too parts won't be as brutal as they would if you went to shit hole AD Farrow. Nice pick up.

Got the garage rearranged a little and did some more tear down today.

So I was thinking about the standard ratty flat black originally but, Im now thinking maybe a flat gunmetal type color for all the sheet metal. And Im gonna be looking for a closer to stock type carb, its got a mikuni 45mm on it and a couple buddies think its too much carb for the bikes' mildish setup. Also, the rear wheel has a slight bend in it so Im gonna just try to upgrade the wheels to some cheap wire spokes if I can find some.

I like the choice on the bike. I was looking at sportsters before i picked up the GS400.

Yeah, I got pretty lucky on the deal I think. I was looking at older jap bikes and then this just kinda came out of nowhere.

I think I'm gonna try some gunmetal wheel paint on the tins with a couple coats of satin clear so I can keep it cheap and with a rough finish. I'm not a fan of clean, shiny show bikes. Hopefully have pics of my test piece tonight.

So, the test piece turned into a bunch of pieces. I liked the look so I kept doing a little more and a little more. Its looking surprisingly good so far especially for what will end up being a quick $40 paint job. I will probably have everything redone next winter but, this should get me through this season looking a little better. Let me know what you think.

Heres a couple pieces together.

Heres the front fender in primer. (2 coats)

Fender after 2 coats.

And the battery tray had some rust so I wire brushed off the loose stuff and hit it with rust converter. Ill let it sit over night and paint it black tomorrow.

Im going to try to pick up my exhaust wrap in the next couple days and get that done. Just cant decide between black or tan. I think black would be cleaner but, tan would look a little rougher which I typically like.

Keep working at it, looks decent from the pics so far. So is Brittany going to get her temps and steal it from you? because I can see that happening.

Shes talking about wanting one. We'll see what happens.

What brand of paint and primer?

Just some cheap 2 for $5 primer from advanced and duplicolor wheel paint. I've used this paint before and its pretty tough. They have a nice clear available that's made for this paint but, I won't use it cause I don't want to be too shiny. Even the other duplicolor auto paints are pretty tough. I'll just have to wait and see how it holds up against the road.

This is more win than a 3 hot stripper pile up on your dick

I don't know about all that but, thanks.

Unfortunately it may take a little longer than planned because of a lack of fundage. I wasnt exactly ready for a project yet but, I'm trying to make it work.
