Build a $20K track car...

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I'm pondering my direction in the next few years. One thing I'm looking at is selling the STI and building a track car that is also street legal. I thought I'd give CR a chance to spend $20K of my imaginary money to build a track car.

But there are conditions.

1. Must be unique/out of the ordinary. No corvettes, f-bodies, mustangs, M3s, etc unless there's a stong case for it to be something special. Some ideas I've considered: 818-R, '70s import (510, celica, etc)

2. Price must include everything mechanical/physicial, from the car itself, to the safetey equipment (enough to do Pike's Peak/Targa Newfoundland so FIA cage etc)

3. Finishing touches (i.e. paint) and stuff that can be done at a later date can be over the budget.

4. Must be RWD

5. 3000lbs max (less my fat ass)

6. I'd like a faily good power/weight ratio.

7. And I don't want something that's already built.

So have at it. What can you cook up?

Do you realize that all the "ordinary" cars you're trying to avoid are common because they work and are easy to find parts for? If it were a car that you're planning to beat on regularly, I'd want to make sure that parts are readily available and not insanely priced. Being different and unique is cool, but there are major drawbacks to it.

20k for a track car will be a hard build.. You'll spend a majority of that in the drivetrain unless you plan on fixing it a lot.. Well 20k in a civic will be good for 9sec civic but it's still a civic. Win ya some $$$ in Mexico though

Something like this?

I doubt thats what you mean, doubt you could make it street legal anyway.

Boxer engine in a Miata is something I've never seen, lots of parts available for both, low CG.

Sorry I'm hung up on Miatas right now when it comes to taking corners, other then Vettes most cars thought of as "sport" or "handling" I don't like.

We need to know what kind of 'track racing' you are talking about until anyone can properly answer your question. Clearly some people are assuming drag racing and some are thinking road racing. I've never heard of anything other than road racing refereed to as 'track racing', but I don't want to assume.

2JZ Celica Supra. They look amazing when done right. Over the weight limit potentially

240/280 Datsun. Rb25 or Rb26 swapped.

Older 300ZX with a newer T/T motor in it.

Just my quick 2 cents. I've always wanted a 280Z with a full cage and RB26 in the bay, but that's just me.

Also just saw the 240/LS1 or swap comment. While it's still unique so many 240's are getting LS swapped. I see as many LS or LM or LQ swapped 240's they almost compete with SR's. If I swapped a 240 It would be with the RB or LS platform. Both can take a beating more than I've heard the SR can.

Track car = road race

Some good ideas, some way off base. LS-swapped RX7s are kind common. I mean, if you see one and it doesn't sound like a dorito, the first question is, "Is that a LS1?" But it is a thought. I ahve been told that I may not fit in a FD however...

I figured the examples of Pike's Peak and Targa Newfoundland were pretty good indicators of the types of racing I plan to do with it. Not to mention the FIA cage. It's in the list of conditions.....

It could be argued that your BRZ would be a fantastic platform to start with...

It is, but then I'd be looking at getting a new DD as well.

The 240s are an interesting idea.. Maybe an old 280... Though to be honest, if I'm going to be rebuilding an old car, it might be smarter of me to just do an 818 since it would be closer to my skill-set.

hmm..

I believe the car alone is over 20k^^^

Well, this is assuming that he would be paying his payment each month, so until the moment he would purchase the new car, it doesn't matter how much it cost new, only what he "owes" on it at that time...

Just a thought.

I'll have to ask what he spent on his build. Not necessarily a track car but fun and good looking and created with his own hands. This is from a buddy on a photography forum I'm on.

Start with a rough shell

Gut it inside and out
