Building my kid a lowered wagon!

Picked this up for $20 off my buddy tonight:

10mins after getting home I had this:

The factory paint was bubbling and peeling off so we went to work stripping it. Since it's his wagon, he got to put in work on it

Once we had gotten all the paint we could get off it was time to bust out the aircraft stripper. Took it to a local car wash and blasted that s*** off:

I have a buddy that powder coats so instead of paint, we're gonna go that route. I asked my son what color he wanted it and he replied Green. He didn't specify which green so we chose this:

That's as far as I have gotten today. I am hoping to get a frame built and either off to be chromed or powdered. I am also going to run go-kart wheels so it has mini slicks. I mean he is going to be pulled around in this thing at the race track, it's only fitting that he has slicks. Who knows how crazy I will get with this, the ideas are def floating around in my head. A $20 wagon could very well turn into a few hundred dollars by the time I am done with it haha.

I have been researching for the last month on these things. It is amazing some of the wagons people have built. I really like the ones that are equipped with air bags, I just don't think it's functional enough for what I plan on using this particular wagon for. Luckily I too have many friends who work at various places which are useful for this build. They are on board to help out, such as powder coating, another one works at a fab shop so he is going to help build the frame with me. I am trying to source some used go kart wheels right now, I may have a lead on a set. I think I am going to put the slicks in the front and put some skinnier wheels in the rear (I race Hondas, cmon!). Our kid seems pretty excited about his new wagon and that's all that really matters at this point.

Awesome project. But seriously, someone charged you for a f'n radio flyer that had rust...wtf ! And you call him a buddy?

You'd be surprised the amount of money people want for these damn things. I about shit myself when I started looking for one. Hell I was just happy to find one, I had spent the last 2 weeks searching CL and even posted on here looking for one. Brand new they can be had for $79 from Walmart, people on Craigslist want $50-$60 for used ones. The only other metal ones I found were either the really small ones or 3+ hours away

Here ya go for example: http://columbus.craigslist.org/atq/3960189328.html

Awesome dad is awesome. Good work man. It's great you're including him too.

Haha it's his wagon, he might was well have some say so in this thing.

I used to see a guy at local car shows that pulled his kids around in a lifted wagon on 4 wheeler mud tires that had 4 wheel steering. Good job on being a cool dad!

Yeah the lifted ones are sweet and more functional ... not the gay stance crap going around.

Full offense.

subtle with a functional suspension

They seem to haul kids just fine...I think that's the only functionality that really matters isn't it? I don't plan on off roading it so it should be ok. My buddy has built a couple of these and they pull his daughter around with no issues.

I am not a fan of the jacked up ones, although I may end up building one to give to my niece and nephew (brother in law is into jacked up trucks).

I have found a couple really good sites to buy parts from if anyone is ever interested in doing one of these.

Cheapest I have found wheels/tires new

http://www.bmikarts.com/

This site sells just about everything you need to build one of these, they even sell completed ones

Was just searching ebay and found this

I had an intake tube with filter laying around and my buddy wanted it. He just so happened to know of a set of 4 shifter kart wheels with tires. We ended up trading straight up, I need to get 1 tire to match the rear as 3 of them are the same size but 1 is an oddball. The oddball tire is pretty wide, I am going to get one like it so the rear end has wide ass slicks with a little smaller tire in the front. Next up is getting the kart back from the sandblaster and building axles to mount these on.
