Why I'm not in Columbus

Some on here know I've taken a new job, some do not. I've recently taken on a new role at Bloom Energy, a fuel cell company based in Sunnyvale, California. I'm pretty excited about it, and they're happy to have me.

The reason I was hired was Blooms commitment to a specific market, in this case they have a keystone customer (eBay) in South Jordan, UT. I will be here for the next 6 months to a year, ensuring proper operation of the entire plant until we can turn it over to someone local permanently. My position is actually based out of Sunnyvale (San Jose), but I'll probably do some traveling. A lot of traveling. Bloom seems to have a very strong commitment to their new customer market.

If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

Have you heard of livejournal?

Yes. :)

As with any new technology, there will be a lot of criticism, and this technology is no exception. The newest versions of our devices are more efficient than the last, and will continue to improve.

This isn't even my final form. http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=695&pictureid=5585

Sounds very cool! Hope the new position works out for you.

On a side note, if you have any free sample type stuff I know our engineering design teacher would be interested in. He has been taking the programs toward renewable energy concepts.

Thanks!

What did you study in college, and where?

I didn't.

I was in the Navy as a GSE (Gas Turbine Systems - Electrical), which gave me training in power generation, physics, and electricity/electronics. I was on an Aegis Cruiser (USS Normandy) as an engine room operator. This put me in charge of a complete engine room for ship propulsion and power generation. After that I obtained a position in the UPS industry (Uninterruptable power), which is the industry I've been in since.

UPS systems transfer AC/DC, then back, DC/AC; so fuel cells (which put out DC, and need to be inverted) are a natural transition. Since these units function more like a power plant than a UPS (which was a surprise to me) my experience relative to these units in our emerging market has been optimal.

Congrats, Eli, and good luck in the new position.

Thank you Doc.

Are you working on the cells or more the install, conversion and power management side? I would think your background would lead to the latter but your not so old to be unable to learn a new trick. :)

It is my experience with data center customers that led to my receiving this position. Bloom was more familiar with general power generation (supplementing utility) than they were with the specific requirements and demands of the data center market. I am still operating/maintaining/installing the units, but also will be writing MOPs, or working with engineering to improve/implement designs, and ensuring that our company can move forward in this industry.

This position is much more involved than my previous positions have been.

Sounds awesome - congratulations, my fine looking friend. All this engineering stuff sounds really cool, though I understand zero percent of it.

So, after you've got things running smoothly there, where to next? Back to the 614, or do you think they'll send you somewhere else to do something similar?

HOPEFULLY, our installation in Japan. http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=695&pictureid=5572

I paused at the same part and said to myself something to the effect of, "Wait what?" Then I decided that it was just part of the engineering stuff that I know zero percent of and moved along in my ignorant bliss.

I have worked in Silicon Valley for the last 8 years, though I don't get out there much. I am in the northern end now, Redwood Shores (behind Oracle). Eat at Hobees (get the coffee cake). Try to hit Refuge in San Carlos if you are looking for something fun to do.

Hobees on Mathilda? That's like walking distance from our office. :)
