Ohio rebuilt title vin?

Once a vehicle has gone through a rebuilt title inspection and passes, is it assigned a new vin once the rebuilt title is issued or would it retain the original vin? In this specific instance the vehicle is a rebuilt theft recovery.

Retains original VIN. A car's VIN cannot legally be changed. There's VIN markers on nearly every part of a car.

Thanks that's what I thought, just caused me to rethink it because of the theft recovery angle.

Some states are different on this however. In NY where I am originally from, the State issues a yellow tag vin (basically a sticker covering the old vin). I don't know the ramifications of having an out of state issued vin in ohio.

Not always, you used to be able to register a production vehicle as self assembled if many of the major components were changed. The OSHP would assign a different vin and affix it to the vehicle. The title would state self assembled and would be updated to the year of the inspection. I do not believe this is allowed anymore for anything but actual self assembled vehicles.
