Guess it depends on the pedigree you are considering.

Porsche's Mezger Engine (GT1 Block) is probably the most successful race engine of the modern era. It was born and bred a motorsport engine and used in street cars for homologation rules. This engine has been in every GT3 / GT2 and Turbo produced since 1999 with it's run officially ending in 2012...though it was still used in the Porsche factory race cars through the end of 2013.

In the GT3 variants the differences between race engine and street engine were minimal with the street engine retaining even titanium connecting rods from the race engine along with a true dry sump oiling system. Power levels in the street cars were only down 5-10% from the race engines with the main differences being camshafts and a slight variation in the heads to optimize flow.

In street form this engine first showed up in the 1999 GT3 in Europe producing 360hp out of a 3.6L engine that would rev to 8000rpm.

It's last iteration in a street car the motor had grown to 4.0L, produced 500hp and would rev to 8600rpm.

Because it was developed as a race motor it has proven to be extremely robust as a street motor. You won't see Mezger turbo motors as serious drag racers however there are several tuners out there making good, reliable power with them just not on the level of some of the other platforms for drag racing

After riding in your car for a few laps i can say the GT3 motor is very stout. Now i need to talk Todd into putting another seat in and letting me ride in his 997 Cup.

i4 - B18, the K20 is better, but the B18 brought mad power for its time and size.

i5 - Probably some audi shit

i6 - 2JZ hands down

v6 - Buick 3800 S/C. Not the BEST performance, but reliability is unreal.

v8 - LSx

v10 - they're all too expensive and stupid.

v12 - see above

Nice way to look at it, and I have to agree with your list. I'm not a fan of 4 cylinder performance so I'm really not up on what a good engine would be. I think for reliability Miata 1.6 and 1.8s run forever even when raced or even with moderate boost to the tune of 200wheel. Surprised no one mentioned the SR20 I thought those where supposed to be good?

B-series engines from the old Honda days were pretty dang amazing from an engineering standpoint, as well as the KA motors.

I think 300hp from a stock Vulva S60R is pretty neat, and they sound better that Audi shit with exhaust stuffs

Coyote 5.0's are amazing engines, even moreso once you get some air and fuel blowing through them. For the price though, a built LS1 is better in almost every way except dem sounds. LS2's are junk.

Nothing beats the archaic brute force of an old carbed SBC though. They're just so simple and you can build them up any way you like.

Must still be a little salty about the TBSS, they aren't all junk.

If you replace everything with aftermarket shit they can be good engines, sure.. but after mine shredded itself to pieces I found a ton of threads across the internet about weird oil starvation problems with them. Edited by Not Brian

I've always thought of the LS2 as the red headed step child of LS engines. My favorites have to be the LSX for the fact that they are among the best at just about any category you can look for in an engine (mod potential, na power, boosted power, reliability, cost, packaging, etc..). Although I am not at all a Honda fan I have to take it off to the B18 just because it was like the LSX of 4cyl fwd powerplants.

What was the Mazda engine all the festiva guys were going tard over? B6t or something like that? Those things put out some decent members with minimal effort. So did the turbo vans. Gotta give them props in the 4 banger realm.

there should be two categories---n/a and boosted

one motor that has not been mentioned::

mercedes 6.2 liter motor---this baby can make 622hp in the black series slr amg and rev to the moon. they also sound fantastic. i vow to own a vehicle with this motor in it.

I've got a strange love for them as well.

Like a Euro big block, that sounds like hell being unleashed.

1.8L BP or BP-T Used in Miatas, early Protege's, 323's & Escort GT's. They handle boost very well.

Lots of love for the KL v6 also.

4 cylinder reliability? Don't even challenge the legend of the volvo b18.

That's the one. Some of the Chrysler 4's seem to take boost pretty well also. I'm not versed in 4 cylinder performance so it's not a fair call for me to make.

i4 - 4efte. I've seen them have the boost cranked WAY up with nothing else done to them...then run forever.

I like this list.

For REALIABILITY and NOT performance I'd throw in the Jeep 4.0 H.O...but this is a performance list. 2JZ is tops IMO.

RIP Elliot. :(
