Car Scratch repair questions

Body guys I have some questions, im trying to fix a scratch on the cheap.

These are all the stages ive done 1-14 right now. I dug the scratched part out so it was flat, used the color matched pen brush and kept going layer over layer to make sure the paint on that area was higher than the rest of the vehicle, then i was going to scotch pad the high spots, and sand it and stuff, then polish.

Main questions.... I have the 800 grit pads, that meguairs stuff (But there one another one at store the guy said might work better, but i already had this), 1500 and 2500 grits.

What steps should I do, take, etc, to make this look at good as possible.

Hit it with 1500 until it's smooth and level. Then move the tape out about 1/2" and hit the area with 2500 until it's blended. Go slow and keep an eye on the scratch. Ideally you want it to be dull/scuffed looking but smoooooth.

 

If you want to swing by my place on Wednesday after work we can sand and buff it back. I have some compound that will do a beautiful job on that. Just text me.

Should i use the 800 sotch pad to level it out, or just the 1500 then 2500. And dry sand or wet sand?

 

EDIT: If i came by your work, will this be a after hours thing or will it cost? Also whens a good time to call and talk to you about this?

1500 and 2500 wet sanding it.

 

What touch up paint did you use? Does it have clear in it? Make sure if you need to add more you wait at least 8hrs preference overnight for it to dry before you sand it again.

 

If you're using paper, wrap it in a small thin sponge. Helps match the contours and avoids harsh spots. I usually use the sponge version of those grits although either way works.

I did 6 layers of touch up paint with the brush (It has clear on the other side with a brush), then i was gonna sand it down smooth and whatnot, then clear, buff etc. I just dont know the correct order.....

 

I mean as in i dont know when to sand, when to wetsand etc. I figured 800 pad to knock it out, 1500 (Not sure if wet or dry) to get it mostly smooth, then remove about 1 inch of tape around it and do that with the 2500 (Wet or Not, im not sure), then buff the crap out of it.

yep. You won't have to compound it. Just use the ultimate polish. It will turn out like a mirror.

Ill do the sanding and get it to the point of it being buffed if you want, or I could just bring the car and we could do the whole thing there, but then again I got no clue what your schedule is, and i dont want to be taking up a bunch of time your etc.)

Go ahead and sand it down and bring it over on Wednesday. I'll hit it with the buffer after dinner sometime between 6-9pm if that works. You have my cell, just text me if that works for you.

Silver, yea good luck with that one.

 

outcome from the above posted image. It can be done. Dr. Color Chip is excellent at matching even with Metallic paint.

Ok is this your car that has been repaired? Or it seems like you have pulled this off this internet. Metallic colors are difficult at best when spraying to match, but much more difficult to match when brushed. If it is your car, then bravo to you.

The above is a repair done by a fellow board member at Autogeek and again, such rapairs are pretty common over there. Gotta use the right product and take your time is all. Howevert if you care to see my black metallic van which has a good, better and then an above level best ranking of correction done to it you're welcome to stop by as Shane did tonight. God knows I've fixed a number of them for my wife.

 

In Shane's case there are several challenges.

 

 

  • Scrape was a decent gouge that has been filled with paint and probably should have been filled only in the channel it was gouged vs so far out from the scratch. leveling where the tape line is vs just the scratch is challenging.
  • Bumper was from a bone yard and has been resprayed. Decent spray job but not great. Paint layer sprayed showed/measured thin. Color was a good match but the thickness and color will pose challenges.
  • Touch up Paint is the $5 kind from the auto store vs Dr. Color chip and tended to glob and drag vs self level

 

We hit it for a while with 1500 grit and nearly leveled it but the end game is going to involve ordering better touch up paint so the paint blends. Then we'll, level it and polish to match. Should be a decent repair once done.

 

Here's an shot of a corner that was repaired by me. Wife has "rounded" every corner on the damn van. :o I don't know if I have a before of this one. I don't tend to document steps like some of the geeks over at AG. :)

Well let's see some pictures after you do the silver. Kudos for the black, but that's black, even with a metallic its a relatively forgiving color. Silvers and lighter metallics are different creatures.
