Ha! Well that's not a suggestion I was expecting! The one in the photo though IS a pretty bad ass looking ride!

 

the Broadspeed body kit is still available from a company called Fibresports in england, though I think shipping might ruin your budget:

the original cars used XJ12C coupes, but people widebody the sedans with home made flares. The spoilers only fit the series II chrome bumper cars anyway.

 

When you think about it, the car isn't really any bigger than a 1st gen camaro (it's certainly smaller than a chevelle) and just as light, but will have 4 wheel discs and Independent suspension front and rear. It has a stately presence when finished out as a race car even if you don't flare it:

After watching the auto-x at goodguys this year I had dreams about getting a budget chevy powered xj6 basher and taking on those $100K 1st gen camaros and A-bodies. I betcha it would do very well against some of those cars.

What about a mini cooper, Those should be able to get on the cheap?

Maybe a older gti?

Acr neons, or even a first gen 2 door.

Svt focus?

 

Hmmmm you know.. we DO have a couple Minis we do work on, that could be a viable option. We would be looking at 1st Gen ones at that price which are a bit of a basket case.. but...

ITT: A bunch of non-racers suggesting race cars.

 

I'm not a racer. I won't suggest a single thing. Consider the source. There's a handful of guys on CR who actually legit road race and even less guys in this particular thread. Seek their advice, ignore the rest. It's all keyboard warrior googling.

 

Why would you take road race advice from people whose daily wouldn't even put up a respectable time around Eastland Mall's parking lot?

 

You have more time in seat than most who have answered your inquiry. :lol:

Who the hell seeks a 4,000 lb car to road course/auto X?

 

After watching the auto-x at goodguys this year I had dreams about getting a budget chevy powered xj6 basher and taking on those $100K 1st gen camaros and A-bodies. I betcha it would do very well against some of those cars.

 

With the proper driver mod that is.

Anybody who runs auto-x with a new camaro, mustang, or challenger.

 

The bigger problem is the car has a really long wheelbase. At 112 inches it's about the same as a 1977-1990 caprice or 1968-77 gm a-body but with less overhang and better balance. The suspension and the cost are really the selling point - derived from the D-type race cars and the same setup as in the E-type and was used in the 70's and 80's to win in touring car, and yet people literally throw these cars away. It was the goofy suggestion but it has some legitimacy.

 

With the proper driver mod that is.

 

Well that's the universal truth about racing isn't it. My father used to beat up on Jaguars, healeys, MGs, etc in SCCA with a 1969 Z/28. Everyone said big fat American cars couldn't take on the tiny sports cars in SCCA till the took home the trophy 3 years running.

If you bend it, good parts are a little harder to find, but there are always "Z" projects that can be bought cheap

 

Again, the best deal in your price range is the "good used" SCCA/NASA racer that has sat for a while. Get it with a pile of spares, prep it / make improvements over the winter - go fast next season!

I kinda thought the $5k budget was a joke?? Or was that just the buy-in range? Cause tires, brakes, and good safety equipment will eat up your budget if not.

 

The Nissans posted in this thread are good options. Miata is a great learning tool, reliable, and cheap but not different like you're looking for. If you're also willing to do so,etching often done then look at an e36 BMW. plenty of parts and support, great driving cars, way better rear suspension design than the e30, and it'll at least seem like it's got some motor to it (at least in m3 form if you stretch the budget).

$5k initial buy in and setup, there are plenty of options out there just need to weed through the junk to find something that works. Upkeep will be a different budget we are just trying to keep ourselves under control on the initial buy in. Dual purpose here is something that may help with brand building, IE the Mini if we are going after the mini support business or one of the Nissans for the G/Z/GTR club

I was thinking of a "learner" for track days at one point. And I figured the best and safest thing was to get a retired Spec Miata. Fully caged, sorted suspension and engine, safety gear, etc. Then I was planning to go beyond the spec by fully stripping the car, going to bigger tires and eventually upping the power.

You see Mr Draco we have the same disease of once we have it and it's great we'll tear it apart, spend more money, and want to make it greater. And while I doubt I'll be able to avoid that going down the race car path I WOULD like to start this process with something sub $5k. Lord only knows where that final price tag will end up

Ahhh! We are actually working on a 75 MGB right now, nifty little cars as long as you aren't much bigger than me. Would be interesting at high speeds for sure.

Hmm, a quick look and they're a bit more expensive than when I was looking last year. Racing Junk has one in GA for 5900.

Ohhh that would be a ton of fun! Not a chance in hell I would throw that kind of money at it, but soo fun!

 

And yes Miata are not nearly as cheap as they used to be, the secret of what they can become has been out for a WHILE.

Well to revive this thread.. here we go. Been DDing this little bastard Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V around a bit the last few days wait on the engine to finally let go. Well this morning fire her up and out the tail pipe comes the ghost. Get her to the shop and see what's what...

Coolant in 2 of the 4 cylinders, slow leak on #3 plug seal, O2 sensor code (which the 2.5 Nissan is notorious for).

 

So looks like this could be a viable opportunity for rebuild/upgrade/racecar stuff OR, fix it and kick it?

 

If it's to be a racecar, we go solid internals and high compression NA or go turbo style, low compression and make some wooshy wooshy noises? What say you CR?
