What's your thoughts on Pres. Obama speech to students?

careful how you put things...don't belittle the things they have done over there regardless of how it was started...

not that killing innocent men, women, and children with chemical and biological weapons is itself a reason to have that motherfu*ker hunted down and killed...too bad it took so damn long for us to have the balls to go in there and get his ass...it should have been done a long time ago...but i digress

:nono:

I would never belittle what they do, they're doing as they are commanded. The people commanding them to sacrifice are the real assholes - shit rolls downhill, so there's not a lot you can do as a grunt. Policy is set from the top down, which is where I find fault.

I would die for my country, but you better have a damn good reason, and is it too much to ask that it's based on truth?

Re: Saddam.

I still forget where it says that it's our job to stop the spread of Islam and go into sovereign countries to police them? It's not that the guy wasn't a douche because he was, but if he wasn't a credible threat to America, why is he our responsibility? A lot of his 'rise to power' is our fault anyway, so we have to reap what we sow.

Agreed he is there because of us, the killing of innocents on purpose and for fun should never be tolerated and that right there give us the right to go kick whoevers ass is doing it...I still love the quote "with great power comes great responsibility"

on that note we should be in darfur and all of the other shitholes where people are literally being butchered, raped, and enslaved daily

bullshit....government run business, healthcare...really that's not leaning towards socialism at all

which are talking points from people exagerating what is really happening...

there should have been no bailout and the companies should have been allowed to falter or adapt

You mean Bush's bailouts? He was responsible for TARP and an initial chunk o' change that was given to the auto industry before he left office...

This should be interesting!

The Us's baby is the mid east and the Un's baby is Africa. Many of the African nations tryed to fight back with a contractor from South Africa but the UN made them stop and shut down operations because the gorillas complained the fighting wasn't fair anymore. So the Un came in with no ammo and their lame ass humanitarian aid. Killing in the nations went right back where it was before the contractors. I can't find the article but it's out there.

Like you said Iraq, along with other places, should have been taken care of a long time ago. It wasn't and anyone who thinks we are done there are ignorant to history. Imo we are fighting to different wars. The US is fighting a war for peace and as some say oil. I don't quite agree with that but it's a view. These radicals are fighting a holy war and never want peace. We are fighting a war for what we think will help people and they are fighting a war to further their cause predetermined by there Sheiks and warlords. Imo it's a loosing battle. But I would rather keep them where they are than sit back and see what they plan on doing again. All these people do is think of ways to promote their cause. Literally every second of everyday and act on it without fear. War is an ugly thing. People are going to die, it's the way it is and has been since the beginning of time. It's not going to change now. Well maybe someday but I'm not getting into that. I believe most of the Military understand that and are willing to do what it takes to get the job done. Thank God for that. If you went into the Military and didn't expect to have to fight a war you fooled yourself. That's what it's all about. They don't go through all that training to sit around and play video games. Most of the soldiers I have talk to want to do what they need to do. Less politics and more Get'R'Done.

i really dont care if it is left or right...the economy should be left alone and the government should stop dabbling in every damn thing, where does it make sense to double the national debt to try and fix the economy and create an inflated government with CZARS and all sorts of other shit....THE WORD CZARS should raise some fucking eyebrows anyways! Who the hell thought that that would be a good idea! to create this team of people to control, undermine existing systems, and report directly to the President all handpicked by the President.

Does this not sound like anything other than a bad idea?????

I still maintain the even though the President is the Commander-in-Chief, he should not be allowed to handpick who is in charge of the military due to the fact that the military would be the controlling force if any sort of control would try to be forced upon the citizens of the US. For the President to be able to control who is in charge of all of these extremely high powered postions is way too much control for one man.

Seriously though, I dont want my kids watching his speech. We all know that he is gonna go on about how the kids dont have to listen to their parents and they should just kill them all. He WILL brainwash our children. Oh Gawd! Really?

Adding - I HATE Obobo and his "change" but come on people this is absurd.

One of the major problems we've developed in this country over the last few decades is this 'ghettoization' of thought. We have so many channels, website, radio stations, etc, that we can go our whole day without ever actually hearing from people who disagree with us.

This is not healthy, for our own mental stability or for that of our society.

Quite simply, when all you hear are people who agree with you, or the opposition as presented by people who agree with you, there's nothing to balance your thinking. There's nothing to make you pause and consider the merits of your argument, because all you hear is 'You are completely correct!'

It leads not only to more extreme thinking, since there's no real exchange of ideas drawing people nearer to the middle, but to a total lack of real information about the other side. When you haven't actually paid attention, and some says 'The other side is going to eat your children and make you drive a Pinto,' you have no sensor to say 'That's not actually what they're saying,' because you weren't listening.

So, even if Obama were going to make some ideology-laden speech to school-kids, smart parents would tell their kids to watch it anyway, and then analyze it critically and objectively. I was fortunate as a kid; my parents basically did this with every major speech while I was growing up. I was taught to look for fallacies, for weasel-words, and for actual policy, and encouraged to form my own opinions, based on facts, logic, and my own sense of ethics.

Sometimes I agreed with them, sometimes I didn't, but at least we were all thinking.

How well does it serve your children if you never teach them how to handle hearing from people who disagree?

And how weak are your arguments if you're afraid to let your kids even hear a speech from someone you disagree with? If your positions can't withstand even slight opposition, you really should re-evaluate their merit.

After saying all that, though, the truth of this particular matter is this: Obama's probably going to say some variation of 'Be good, Make friends, Don't do drugs, Stay in school, blah blah blah' like every other politician in US history. And the kids will ignore the whole thing, passing notes, making faces, throwing paper footballs, and generally just being the poorly-behaved little savages that are apparently all we can raise in this country anymore.

Much ado about nothing (or close enough to it).

Anyone know the topic of his speech? Did I miss it?

I'm just spitballing here but I'm pretty sure that his speech to kids would be pretty close to the same speech given by ANY elected official. It will probably include messages such as "stay in school, study hard and you can succeed" maybe some "get out and help your neighbors" "you have the power to change your community" maybe to the older kids a message about getting out and voting.

If that's the case, which I'm sure it is, then what's the problem?

From what I have seen on the News is it is going to be the regular speech. Like you said, stay in school and study hard. I have no problem with that myself. It's the President and for a kid that should be exciting even if I don't agree with his political decisions.

link I found real quick. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ib8qja0qqnnbZFsHF7kP6GV9XVfQD9AGN3DG1

We will see. Like I said before my kids will watch it if it's on at school. If they have questions, I will ask, I'll try to do my best to explain my point of view as my point of view. They know people don't always agree but it's most important to know what your agreeing with and why.

Not busting balls or anything, but I notice there are a lot of people that like to tell you how and what to do with kids even when they dont have them.

No Sam, no one knows the topic of the speech. What IS known is that the White House has offered a "lesson plan" for before and after the speech. However, due to the public outrage over this they are supposed to be releasing the full text of the speech on Monday. Honestly, if it was a typical "stay in school, study hard, etc., etc.," speech I believe they would have released the text when it was announced.

Honestly, if you look at this presidency so far, I dont think you can be too sure of anything being "normal". We have the government and a major union owning what was once a private company, we have cabinet positions unfilled while we have more "czars" than the Romanov Dynasty (at least one of whom is an avowed communists), and a president that doesn't seem to know what is and isn't in "his" health care plan.

Normal, typical...not even close

Maybe people could shelter themselves (and their kids) in their underground bunkers with their guns until this speech blows over.

This isn't nuclear winter.

Like fusion said, if you're worried this single day will change your son/daughters opinions and 'brainwash' them into educating themselves and asking questions seeking the truth rather than an agenda, then you need to take a hard look at yourself as a parent.

Also, Aerik's post needs to be quoted again, just for merit.
