legalized gambling doesn't cause obsession any more than legalized handguns cause murder. Addicts and criminals will always find a way. I volunteered once to work a bingo night... that was by far the most depressing and disturbing night ever. And that's legal and encouraged!

I am a gambler, but I will prolly vote no on it this time. The way it is written, the only places that will EVER be allowed to have a casino built are Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, and Cincinnati. To me, that is horseshit. Leaves SE Ohio out of the loop again.

SEOhio is out of the loop because there's nothing there, you should move to somewhere in Ohio that has people.

i watched on the local news some douche from Nationwide Insurance say they would fight a casino in Cbus. That it wasnt in their interests.

i hate when corpos tell us what we do/dont need.

Remember, big corporations run this country... he who has the most money has the most influence. Just my personal opinion though.

i know. doesnt mean i like it.

Maybe if they used their money to stay competitive they would get close to Allstate rates. But they are trying to keep the world the way they want it.

They are always at QSL trying to get buisness. heres how it goes.

Them: Hi would you like a quote.

Me: Sure.

Them: Who are you with now?

Me: Allstate.

Them: Well sorry i know we wont be able to match them.

Me. I know. Thats what you told me last week. now give me a towel/swag of the week. :D

Casinos in Ohio should be a dead issue by now. They can build them, but the people wont come.

Wanna play slots? Drive an hour and a half from anywhere in the state (in just about any direction) and you can play all the slots you want.

Wanna play table games? Drive a couple of hours (2 or 3) and you can play those too.

As a state we're WAYYYY behind the curve. PA has them, WV has them IN has them, MI has them. The "locals" (anywhere) don't gamble enough to support the casion(s). To survive a casino needs that out of state traffic, and those built in Ohio probably wont get it.

The people that are for it now lobbied for the legislation and got it. Those that are against are people like Jeff Jacobs who own the casinos in neighboring states. They're very aware of the fact that the Ohioans who patronize their places wont be there any more if we get Casinos here.

Basically, I see it as a lose-lose proposition. The Casinos that are built here wont be anything to write home about, and the ones that are now within driving distance will decline, all because neither of them will have the traffic they need to grow and improve their facilities.

Dont get me wrong - I LOVE gambling. I play the charity poker up in Cleveland several times a year. I get to Vegas at least every other year, AC at least once a year, and I've been to the Seneca Nation's joints 5 times this year (just got back from Seneca Allegeny about an hour ago). It would have been great to get them here 10 years ago, but we missed the boat. We're better off without them.

Wait Todd.... what is your justification in thinking that if you build a casino within 30 minutes of people they are still going to drive 2-3 hours to go to another one?

No, they won't go to the other one. That's the problem. Let me try this again.

I live in Akron. I can get to Presque Isle in 90 minutes. Harrah's builds a casino in Cleveland. I can get to Cleveland in 45 minutes. I go to Cleveland instead of Presque Isle. Presque Isle loses my business (and the business of everyone else within an hours drive of cleveland). Presque Isle's business declines, they don't have the money to re-invest in the property or expand it, and it becomes a shit hole.

The same holds true for the Cleveland Casino. Since there are already Casinos in Erie, Pittsburg, Detroit, Buffalo, etc. The people from Erie, Pittsburg, Detroit, etc., dont come to the Cleveland Casino because they already have one 30 minutes away. The Cleveland Casino doesnt meet budget, goes through a bunch of operators who also can't get the people from Detroit, Erie, Pittsburg, etc., and eventually it too becomes a shit hole or closes.

If you go to a Casino anywhere on the planet (and I've been to them all over the world) you'll notice that most of the people throwing money around are NOT from the local area - they come from out of town. There arent enough gamblers in the Cleveland area to support a joint - just like there aren't enough gamblers in Vegas to support ALL of the joints that are there.

Make sense?

Ahh I gotcha now.

I can agree with you there, there's only so much money that's going to be spent, so now it's split between 2 casinos instead of 1, both are going to get rundown.

I can appreciate that, but I feel like in the meantime we can keep some money in Ohio :) And you're right, people LIKELY won't "come to Cleveland" for a Casino the same way we go to Windsor... but maybe!

So, this is also going to hurt Vegas since there will be casinos closer to home? I guess there are many more facets to this than most of us think about.
