Strictly Street
Electric motorcycle racing has hit the big time with the announcement that the organizers of MotoGP are launching an electric racing series next year. There’s no word yet on who’s racing or what rules they’ll have to follow, but the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme has four races on the calendar and says more are coming. The FIM brings us the top-tier MotoGP grand prix series and other races. It says the e-Power International Series reflects its growing concern about the future of the sport and the need to promote alternative energy.“The FIM, as the governing body of motorcycle sport, must take into account current environmental problems,” FIM president Vito Ippolito said in a statement. The series will be organized by the FIM’s Road Racing Commission. The first race is slated for April 18 during the Le Mans 24 Hours, with others scheduled for Sept. 12 in France and Nov. 14 in Qatar. The date of the fourth race, during the Albacete 8 Hours in Spain, is to be announced.More info here:http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/11/fim-e-power-series/
fox_racing_guy
If it's anything like they ran at Mid-Ohio this year at vintage days I'll pass, what a snooze fest a stock 883 sportster would have left all of them for dead. ReconRat
If it's done right, an electric is the fastest on the track. Pit stops are a bitch. Changing battery packs isn't easy. But in sprints, they win. Whether enough batteries can be jammed into a small frame like a motorcycle, remains to be seen.
Disclaimer
Whether enough batteries can be jammed into a small frame like a motorcycle, remains to be seen.Key statement right there. I think we're still a few years away from light enough and small enough batteries to compete with an ICE. I'd like to see development of supercaps progress because those would fill this niche perfect. Edited November 24, 2009 by JRMMiii
e-flores
I don't know about this. If they can make something light enough yeah perfect! But I think they are going to have a very hard time doing such a thing...
