South Western Ohio Geocachers

If you never heard of Geocaching, Just click on the link "What is Geocaching"

above and it will tell you all about it.

I myself have been a very long time Geocacher. Geocaching is a fun hobby

to get into and for the most part it's free outside of buying your GPS unit.

Over the past 9 years I have put on Geocaching events in 18 states

and have done or helped in another 189. I have done everything from

101 classes to Road Rallies. One event I have never done is a Bike event.

I have cached a lot on my R1 and I have had a blast. I have a lot of idea's

on how to put put together an event but what I need to know is if we have

the people out their who want to do an event like this.

If we do then I was thinking about a date sometime in August of this year. I

can make this a one to two day event. We will start in Columbus being it's

in the middle of the state.

If you think this is something you would like to do, please post a reply and

let me know. If you have any questions, please post them to and I will be

happy to answer them.

(What I am holding is the lid to a small lock and lock container "The Cache"

which I went out to find)

Definitely planned on doing this for awhile, there's a good amount of geocaching around Columbus, though some of them could be difficult to reach on bike.

There's geocaching everywhere! You can do a lot from the bike. There's a ton of them within .5 miles of a pull off. Some of it can require a bit of hiking, but it's really not to bad. The hardest caches may require a pair of hiking boots or something, but that's part of the fun.

  • 11 months later...

We just got in to Caching a few weeks ago when my friends from England were here.

I have the iPhone app which is cool (but not cheap) and we just got the Magellen GPS designed for Geocaching.

With everything that went on last year (22 Events) This one was

put on the back burner. This year After the July 1-4 Great American

Birthday Bash in Cincinnati we only have 2 events to do so this

can get a ticket to ride

This has been given some really bright light last month and

a lot of details have came together and how we could do it.

Here is two ways we could do it. By no means is this the

only way. We will need lots of help to shape it into something

that we may do every year.

(This is the Grand vision)

-The event would Start and End in Columbus.

-Special event only Geocaches would be set just for the event

(which all can be logged for credit)

We would have Geocaching clubs in Ohio place these caches

that would be in the number of 300 to 500.

-The Playing field

The idea that we would Start on Friday Night at 7pm with a trip to

Toledo and an over night stay. Saturday you would ride to Cleveland

then down to Ironton with a Stay in Ironton. Sunday Morning would

be a ride to Cincinnati then Back up to Columbus to end the event.

-There can also be games in the game like a poker run.

(The small vision)

-The event would Start and End in Columbus.

-Special event only Geocaches would be set just for the event

(which all can be logged for credit) We would have a few cachers

place about 100 caches

-The event would be 10am till 6pm Saturday with no over night

stay unless you wanted to.

Also this event, no matter which one we pick will be set up with Bikes in

mind. The event caches will be set up for easy access or little walking

from your bike. We may take you on some back roads but they will be

blacktop roads ;) The idea is not to put space between you and your

bike as the idea is to cache n ride.

We will also set it up two ways. You can just ride it and not worry about

time or you can toss your hat in and go for it. The first ones wins!

which will be set up in three (Hogs, Duros and Rockets)

These are just a few things we had in mind. We would like to

get together in Columbus the last Sunday in July to chat about

this event for anyone who would like to help out in plaining this thing :D

The target date would be the end of August. Not sure if we can do

it by then but would like to try.

I have been doing this for some time myself. Count me in and I will help out. Sooner we have some dates the better. Am down in lancaster ohio area and I know of a few caches already in the area. A few I have yet to find but have not looked this year.
