Diesel Mech Needed

My buddy has a 2007 F350 w/ (he says) the 7.3 TD. Just driving it yesterday, it gave up the ghost on him and his regular mechanic is out of his depth (not diesel). Anybody have a line on a good diagnostician who can tell him what might be wrong and estimate the damage?

PM me, please.

If it's a 2007, it's not a 7.3. From what I have, it's probably a 6.0. The hi pressure oil pump is a fairly common failure on those, and it's not cheap to fix. That may not be it, that's just the first thing that comes to mind from the few 6.0 powerjokes that I've worked on.

The only place that I know of right off would be Columbus Diesel. In the past, I worked on quite a few, but the shop where I currently work does not really have the space for bigger pickup trucks. :(

Columbus Diesel also just opened a new location this year and from what I hear it's legit. But yes, if its an 07 its not a 7.3 unless it was dropped in.

What does he have happening, no power, puking coolant, what was he doing when driving, towing, running it hard? Head gaskets, injectors, EGR, oil pump, all very common. If puking most likely head gaskets, if it runs but the power is all jacked up most likely oil pump or injectors.

No details other than he said it quit, but would turn over. Not too sure about the year, but he was insistent that it was the 7.3. Or at least, he said it was the "good" one. I know shite about diesels, but a wiki search says they were phased out in 2003.5? Would that apply to the fleet style, stake bed duels?

He's north, Mans-burg area.

Oh, and he said he got it pretty low on fuel.

Could he need to bleed the injectors? :dunno: I've had to do this on old diesels but I don't know if the new ones need it after running outta fuel.

Totally forgot the FCIM, but yeah the drivers side goes bad on the strokes pretty often, and that will cause them to be dead.

Get some more details if you can or PM me and I will get you my # and have him call me. For the record Im no mech. just obsessed with my Powerstroke, Diesel Mags, etc.

As for bleeding the injectors that would just mean there was no fuel, or water in the fuel, in which case theres a water seperator plug on the frame rail on the driverside at the fuel pump. Those go bad too, just from time.

If its an 07 it isnt a 7.3 they stopped in 2003.5 and the 6.0 sucked until at least 2004.5 even into 2005. I have a 2005 and have had some issues, but not many KNOCK ON WOOD. I also have done quite a bit to prevent issues too.

OH, and Mans-burg, you mean Mansfield? If so, I will actually be in the area Saturday until Sunday, possibly at my friends garage who works on diesels too. If it's that area, my guys shop is in Lexington right by Mid Ohio exit off 71. They do everything and I can get him the ##. I've been in there with ambulances with stroke's being worked on etc.

Has he done a recent fuel filter change? Checked the glowplug module to ensure its working? Fuel pressure good? There's a LOT of possibilities to properly diagnose without having more info or the vehicle to test different issues. We dont work on much other than class 8, but have had some B series and PS pickups come in when we get slow. More info would be VERY handy

Ya, have him call me. FYI The #1 Powerstroke mechanic 7.3 and 6.0 specialist was local, Canal Winchester, named Ed Cook. Unfortunately, he took his life earlier this year at about 25 years old. My fiance's uncle was a close family friend, he had a strongly built 7.3 that Ed did all the work on.

Unfortunately, I never got to meet him, but he was always around my future uncle-in law. But this guy knew more about the 7.3 and 6.0 than anyone from what I'm told. He was mentioned in Diesel Power, and multiple diesel magazines nationally.

Either way, if he doesn't get things straightened up, I will talk to the shop owner this weekend too and see how backed up they are.

Since it's a 7.3, it's PROBABLY the CPS like the midget says. I have a known good one in my tool box for testing purposes! I've also had a few with a bad IDM, the one up in behind the fender. From there, a few other things could cause the problem, but they're not as likely, and usually only occur on poorly maintained trucks.

recall CPS is garbage

this is the one you want

http://www.riffraffdiesel.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RRD&Product_Code=182

says theyre sold out....try to track down a black one though before you go with the recall ones....i have the recall one tossed in my glovebox as a spare

also - if the truck wont start at all now, unplug the CPS and if thats the problem, it should fire up....it will run a default setting unplugged.....most of the time you can just fire it back up after it dies, unless the cps is completely dead
