Herin lies your problem. Go to a shooting forum to look for shooting advice from "experienced shooters" This site will get you moto information with a few people that know firearms and even fewer that actually know what they are talking about especially when talking about a precision bolt rifle. Head over to Snipershide.com to get more factual answers to your question. This question is even a stickied topic there so you have a vast wealth of knowledge in 1 place. FYI, Here is a thread listing out ALL the equipment being used by some of the top shooters winning the competitions in the use. Everything from Builders, barrels, stocks, actions, bipods, caliber, bags etc. Understand that 95% of these will be custom rigs but it goes to show you that its not just about the rig, its about the driver. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3728307#Post37283072 points

Also, to directly answer your questions... The AXIS isn't worth your time unless you plan on selling it when you need something more. While the Remington 700 action is better, I would go with a Savage. Savage is your choice due to low entry cost, and the ability to upgrade barrels without a gunsmith. You can get a new barrel in .308, .260, etc.. by a barrel change and bolt swap if you start with a .223. Also, even if you want to stay with 223, you can get a heavier barrel (I'm assuming you are looking at their "hunter" weight options) with a match chamber and a better twist rate. Also, there are lot of good options now for replacement Savage stocks. You can even go real fancy and get an AI chassis or a McCree. Since you mentioned distance shooting, you want to get the fastest twist rate you can find to stabilize the heavier bullets when you start reaching out there. Many varmit guns have a 1/12, I believe most of the Savage do 1/9 and the Remington SPS tactical does 1/9. At the very least, get a 1/9 as it gives you the ability to use up to 69gr bullets. You'll want a 1/7 twist eventually if you are looking at shooting the 77gr smk or some of the 80 or 90 gr vld bullets (note you will be loading past mag length so this may) make your gun single feed depending on your mag system. A hot 77gr load (think 556 pressure vs 223 pressure) will get you to 1000 yards on a good day. A 223 pressure load with an 80gr vld will probably be better. I have a buddy that likes to shoot his 223AI with 90grainers at 1200yards just to show people it can be done. Kevin makes a good point in that if you start with a .243 you won't need to swap bolts if you switch calibers, at least for certain ones that don't need a magnum boltface. I know you are looking at their package deals, and I'm not up on the price difference, but opt for a varmit setup in the package vs the standard weight barrels.1 point

Gun or not, if the driver was attempting to run over officers as has been reported, deadly force to prevent that/those officers from being run down is more easily justified. If no gun is recovered, the police are in hot water, but as noted, it's not unreasonable to believe that they could have fired a revolver (no casing ejected) and ditched it some time during the 20 minute pursuit. Assuming there was no shot fired and no gun, why flee? I am betting both occupants were high. Both have criminal records, including 7 felony convictions for the male, and he has fled before. But back to the assumption that there was no shot fired, and it was a car backfiring - I don't think the police acted unreasonably by attempting to stop a car that they believed had just shot at them. Once the car was finally cornered, the occupants used the car itself as a deadly weapon, and deadly force in response was appropriate. The fact that 12 officers all thought so and fired at the same time is helpful or harmful depending on how you view things. If I'm putting myself in the cops' shoes, I am under the belief that the suspects have at least 1 firearm in the vehicle, have already fired at officers, and are now using the car as a weapon. Shooting until the suspect stops moving is a lot more reasonable when you're acting on that premise.1 point

Based on current information the force used seems excessive but we dont know much about what happened yet. Though I'm sure the cops involved were on edge after being lead on a wild case involving at least a couple collisions. Very interesting that this started in front of the Justice Center downtown. I have a Ruger American and am very pleased with it. I bought it for deer hunting with my Dad in Vermont, and to do some distance shooting. I'm not on a SWAT team, I'm not a hired gun, so this rifle covers all I need. I comes with an adjustable trigger and the weapon is very accurate for one at this level out of the box. It's a hunting gun, so no heavy barrel needed and after the 4th round you will see a difference in impact if you fire it somewhat quickly. Personally, if you are going for a long barrel bolt weapon, go with a higher caliber like .308 or 30 06. Smaller calibers are too limited to be worth your while and you might find yourself wanting to upgrade sooner than you thought.1 point

Really no worries.. Like I said, its been a helluva 2 weeks. I wasnt trying to be an ass really. Just trying to point you in a direction that could help better and give some fair warning to help you avoid some things others have run into by not knowing better and asking questions that I know would get you chewed out.1 point

You mention a budget but I am not sure what all needs to be contained in it. I would strongly advise following flounder's advice. I will go a little against the grain here in my recommendation to meet your budget though; I think the Stevens 200 would be ideal. It is the cheaper line of the Savage which has been recommended here plenty, but it will be at budget with the rifle alone (same with any rem 700 action rifle). OTD it can be had for $300, then you can spend some money on nice optics ($200-$300) and then money is left over for rings, base, optic covers and bipod/sand bags and you are at $700 even. Edit: Quick search brought up this: http://www.snipercentral.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=363551 point

Yeah, what he said, smells of a scam to get investment dollars. I would be embarrassed to put out such shitty results when failure was the only option. If you want to end up with something different you have to do things differently. Expecting an existing design to behave the same with inferior materials is something that I would expect to see out of an eighth grade science class. What they are trying to achieve is doable but I doubt these guys are the ones that will be successful especially witnessing what they believe to be a reasonable starting point. I'm not all that sure I find much value in what they are trying to do and I would have at least started four steps ahead of where they are now without giving it a whole lot of thought or design time.1 point

Yup, dumb. They have Solidworks models showing weak points but they didn't want to do the test with ABS to see it fail? I don't know what the purpose of the test was. They had to have known the printer works and the model is good, they could have referenced the spare lower if they had doubts. I think they are trying to drum up business because ABS models have already been done and shown to fail, thats probably why they went with the 5.6vround (to make it appear that its fully functioning). If they wanted to do something cutting edge, print a metal lower and watch it work. Maybe I'm just being a pessimist, but I really don't see anything interesting or revolutionary here. It smells of a business move and trying to get investors. I can't knock them for it, I just think they should have done something more show-y to grab people's attention1 point

I'll second the savage with accutrigger, hard to beat them for accuracy at the price point. I have a 12 LRPV and it shoots really damn well when I do my part. For your range you could get the 10FP-SR, or you could go with the 12FV. Either way you're going to want to spend more than the $100 leftover in your budget on a scope. I think there are also some savages that come in combos for around $500, but the scopes are probably shit and I don't know about the rifles. As many say, buy once cry once!1 point

Dumbass Michonne had Governor down and instead of cutting off his head while down she sat him up and started choking him with her sword. I thought that was the stupidest thing...I was so annoyed by that.1 point

My vote for entry level is the savage with accutrigger. For a starter gun that you are going to shoot tons and tons or rounds to get the fundamentals down with you can't beat it. When you get those skills honed then I say move to a 700 chassis so there are more options to expand and upgrade. I have a 10 series in 243 but it has a light barrel when I'm creeling lazy ill pack it around to ground hog hunt instead of my longer range ar. All of this is just my opinion and wtf do I know anyway lol1 point

Not bolt guns, but the H&R heavy Barrel single shots are pretty cool too. Hell of a gun for $250.1 point

If you want .223 that shares parts with your AR check out the mossberg mvp. I know nothing more then it takes AR mags. Do some research to see if its a decent gun or crap I just saw one at fin thought it was kinda neat.1 point

I'm partial to Savage since they bought up Accutrigger a long while ago and it's pretty much standard on just about all of their stuff now. I enjoy my Model 12 BVSS .243...which I'm still considering unloading...1 point
