  3. I'm relatively new to the world of DIY maintenance. I make no apologies, it's just something that was not done in my house growing up. I've decided to break that chain and learn some things on my own so my kids can learn to be a little more independent. I performed my first oil change on my FZ6 about two years ago. No problem at all. On Memorial Day weekend, however, I did not fair so well. I decided to change the oil in my Victory..... Purchased the 5 quart jug of oil from I.P. and a new K&N filter. Put down about 4 square feet of cardboard so I didn't ruin the driveway. Placed the pan, opened the plug, drained, removed filter, etc. No problem. No mess. Time to fill it back up. Screwed in the plug, lubed the filter and then screwed it on. Again, no issue. Bike takes 4.5 quarts, so I poured .5 into an empty oil container with measuring points and then filled the bike with 4.5. Turned it on..... Ran it a bit.... Checked level and it's low. So, of course I pour the rest in. All done! Time to ride. I took it out, jumped on the freeway for a bit and then it dawned on me.... I took the oil level reading while on the side stand. Crap! Directions say to have it upright for the oil level to be accurate. Being obsessive as I am, I immediately came home and googled. Some say "no big deal", others say .5 too much will foam up and cause damage. Ok.... I can fix this. I just got a 2 cup measuring cup and placed it under the plug. No cardboard necessary since I'm just going to unscrew it a little to let out .5 quarts.....right? Apparently, just letting a little out isn't an option. Unscrewed a little....nothing, a little more.....nothing. Oh shit! Now I'm holding the plug with boiling motor oil gushing over my hands and onto my driveway. Tried to plug it with my finger..... Hey, the motor is hotter even than the oil. So, I cleaned up.... Poured 4 new quarts in, ran it, measured and we're all good. So let's see some "I'm a dumb-ass" stories of DIY maintenance. I know they're out there.

  4. While your wife is in the hospital, take the dirty baby blankets home with you and put them everywhere the dog claims is his... He can already smell/sense the baby in your wife's belly... A baby will be proven to hold dominance by the way his/hers sent is placed in the dogs "spots" Including the dogs eating area. If the dog chews up any of the blankets, punishment/training will follow. When you bring the baby home, let your wife come in 1st... By herself. This way the excited dog will see the owner that's been gone for a few days. After, take the dog on a looooong walk while your wife brings the kid in and starts to relax. Then, slowly introduce them... Under no circumstance should you add anything new with the dog the day you bring the baby home. A muzzle is only going to add stressed and the dog will rationalize that stress with the new baby. My wife and I had a 5 year old husky when we brought our 1st baby home... At the time, the dog was our baby... We stressed and freaked out over what he would do. I talked to a dog trainer and what I wrote above is exactly what they told me to do. It worked well, our husky was a little freaked out but he settled and it was over. The second kid, did the same thing and he was even better about it. If the dog sees you as it's alpha, he will have to except the new member. It goes without saying though, never ever ever leave kids and animals unsupervised. Sorry for the book, I just know how horrifying a baby and a dog can be... Just be calm and dominate and everything will be good.

  5. I picked up a leftover 2010 CBR600RR ABS a couple weeks ago. Fit and finish is quite nice. It has 'track tuned' Combined ABS that is actually pretty impressive. There's some You Tube videos of people slamming in the brakes on sand and wet asphalt without issue. I haven't been that brave, but good to know it can do it. After riding mostly twins for the last 10 years, I seem to have a mental block that forces me to shift at 10k. I'm working on it though. Stock photo, but all Hondas look the same.

  9. When I was maybe 20, I did a fuel pump of a buddy's piece of shit dodge fury. After the job it was time to get it started and it was having trouble pumping the fuel on just the starter motor. To avoid killing his battery I decided to pour gas directly into the top of the carb, which made the engine run great, till it backfired through the carb and caught it and all the spilt gas on the top of the motor ablaze. He ran to get something to extinguish the growing flames with and returned with patio furniture chair cushions. Oddly, they turned out to be highly flamable as well. At this point in time a cyclist happened upon us and withou asking I relieved him of his water bottle and poured it on the now fully engulfed engine. The effect was non existant. Here comes my buddy at a full run with the garden hose which he had forgotten to fully un-ravel. Ten feet from the street he runs out of slack and is promptly slammed on the ground by momentum and gravity. He finally gets the hose over and we put his car out. For shits and giggles I tell him to try the motor again. Fucking thing starts right up and he gave me a lift home. A week later the frame broke just behind the motor cradle and he scrapped it for beer money.

  10. The motorcycle store I work at, Premier Cycle Accessories in Mentor, is closing for good after seven years and as a result, I'm being laid off pretty soon. With that being said, I'm looking for another job. I've enjoyed my time up here but it is what it is. I am determined to stay in the motorcycle industry as I have enjoyed my work duties in the various positions I've held in several motorcycle-related businesses over the past few years. But I'm always up for something different. Any leads or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Of course I could return to the education field if the opportunity is right. I'm open to positions in Ohio or on either coasts, and if it involves travel, I'd enjoy that too. Although I am in NE Ohio right now, I may be returning to Columbus or possibly heading to another part of Ohio at the end of the summer. That is pretty much dependent on my job situation by then. Even a suggestion or recommendation would be great. Please feel free to peruse my LinkedIn profile (http://linkedin.com/in/christinemalazarte/) or PM me for a copy of my resume. Thanks! With that being said, my store is liquidating all of their in-stock merchandise. Head over to pca-one.com and snag some goodies at discounted prices!

  12. While this wasn't a maintenance dumbass moment but dumb non the less. This happened about an hour and a half ago. So I haven't rode the bike since I went down to Norris Lake a couple weekends ago. Being that the wife and kid went to Florida that same weekend nobody would be home for a 3 day stretch. I keep the bike in the garage and figured I would add a bit more security to the bike than just locking the garage door. So before I head out for the weekend I threw some padlocks on the brake discs. One on the front and one on the back. If someone was going to steal it I wanted them to at least mildly work for it. Today I decide to take a spin on the bike. I get my gear on, throw my leg over the bike, put in it neutral and start back peddling it out of the garage. Next thing I hear is CRUUUUUUNCH-SNAP. MY first thought was what the fuck did I run over. Then it dawned on me THE LOCKS!!!!!! I am still pissed at myself for forgetting. Hear is the damage. Totally fucked up my front fender.

  13. Ahh he was okay, but when his Mom seen the video she flipped! And it was the 3rd day of riding we were ready to head home, so it was his last lap when this happened! He didn't get back on he wanted to, but I decided to let his little bro ride it back to trailer and call it a day. He was more upset that his shirt got wet and muddy. When the wife saw video she was like "that's it there not riding no more" I lol and she said " No FTS I mean it there not riding the quads no more". And Nathan looked up at her all cute and shit and said " Does that mean I can get the dirt bike now!" Never been there, looks cool. Be sure to post up the video!

  18. The dog needs to be trained that the food doesn't belong to her and she won't react that way in the future. Easily solved with some patience and proper training - people give up on them too damn easily.

My bike is now pretty quick, and very comfy... I've mulled selling it for something else... Bt for the money and the custom tailoring to me...it can't be beat

  31. Well, speaking of oil, when I was 16, my dad was showing me, for the first time, how to change the oil in my newly aquired piece of crap 1977 Ford Thunderchicken. Showed me how to properly jack the car up and ensure it is secured with stands, with the whole speech of how you don't want the jack to fail or fall while under the car. Got that all situated and we crawl under the car so he can show me where the drain plug is and how to remove it, carefully draining the old oil into the container without making a mess. So far so good, no spilt oil. We proceeded to move over to the oil filter and he showed me how to remove it, oil up the seal on the new one, and screwing it on enough but not too much, making it easy to remove when the next change is due. Again so far so good. We crawl out for a few minutes to let the oil completely drain. I crawled back under to watch the draining (16, everything was exiting then). I come back out with the container. Me: "Good to go, oils all drained." Dad: "Okay, using the funnel, just pour the new oil in there". After about 3 quarts. Dad: "Um son, did you put the plug back in?" Me: "No, you didn't tell me to." Guess who had to clean the garage floor, and never heard the end of it, for the rest of his fathers life? This guy!

  40. I side with the doj on this one. Someone inside leaked classified info about a terror plot to the press. They should pull the phone records. Find out who did it and put them in Gitmo since it doesn't seem to be closing. But send Holder there for fast and furious too. Along with most of the IRS. Fuck it. Send them all, let's start over.

  43. I saw a Chevy Badged looking G8. Murdered out black on black with an ls2/6.0L badge on the back of it. Well after researching it Turns out it was a new Chevrolet Caprice. The only problem is... they're PPV Police issue only! It had civilian WV tags. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO OWN SUCH A Vehicle? I saw it off of Brice Rd/Scarborough Area 2 weeks ago. I'm 99.9% Positive It's a Caprice
