    Bump Start

Ok, I promised myself I'd replace the weak 10 year old battery really soon. But apparently not soon enough for a dork move. I left the key on for 5 minutes with the kill switch engaged, and yup, no start. Let it sit a couple of minutes, and still weak, no start. (Unplugging the headlight and tail light is a cool move, but I wasn't in the mood.) Enough juice there to pressurize the fuel pump. Ok, get ready, get the gear on, get on bike, back up, walk uphill, downhill, enter street (still walking), turn left, turn right, and enter a really long gentle downhill parking lot I knew would be there. Still walking, but now pushing with both feet at same time. Get feet up and coast for a while, pop clutch in second gear and start engine. Turn around and go home. I'm getting too old for this... I used to run along side holding the clutch in, and jump on side saddle and pop the clutch. Wasn't feeling the balance act for that move today. Shoot, we used to kill batteries so hard the kick starter wouldn't work. Pushing always works if there's anything left of the battery at all.

  14. I've often wondered about the old "Slick 50". It had a lot of graphite in it. I knew a couple of people that used it and had engines fail. But as near as we could tell, they had pretty good engine oil leaks, and the graphite made it leak faster. Causing simply an unexpected engine failure from oil loss. edit: good grief it's still being sold as an oil/engine treatment. It used to be sold in quarts for oil changes. http://www.slick50.com/products/AdvFormulaEngineTrt.htm edit again: a little reading, and Slick 50 isn't graphite anymore, it's now PTFE, which is teflon, invented by DuPont, who say that "Teflon is not useful as an ingredient in oil additives or oils used for internal combustion engines." edit more: I thought of one more back in the day. Kendall sold a bad batch of oil, and it failed prematurely. Lost all of it's viscosity quickly. In my bike, it lasted only hours, and the engine was making noise. They weaseled on that one, but too many people saw what happened.

You are getting to be quite the skilled photographer. Impressive.
  16. might be just a downdraft if there was no rotation. But that's often just as dangerous from high winds.
  17. nevermind... this news says a vehicle was stopped on the road. Completely different story. http://www.newstalkradiowhio.com/news/news/local/man-dies-motorcycle-crash-near-piqua/nLgbJ/
  18. 919 gets 45mpg consistently, mostly daily city riding. Higher speeds on the open roads seems to get a bit better, but not always. Haven't checked the new 919, it's geared up on the front sprocket to run lower rpms. I need to do that.

  20. Sheriff's looking at possibility of a stuck throttle causing a crash. I wouldn't want to be that repair shop. I wonder which one. Happened in the Piqua area. Oh, and remind me to check my throttle (and brakes) after repair, even if it's me doing the work.... Test drive takes a dangerous turn http://media2.wdtn.com//photo/2012/03/29/Piqua_motorcycle_crash_1_20120329212445_320_240.JPG
  21. more stats... as a collective group, people have now paid in $1.46 billion in an attempt to win 640 million individually... edit: since the state keeps a large portion, this is in essence a voluntary tax. The annual average paid in 2010 was $58 per person in the United States.
  22. I used to do this stuff. But all of these are better than what I could do. Guess I need time and practice...
  23. I use these all the time. And lately have been finishing off with a restoring spray that I found sitting around at work. It puts the clarity back in clear plastics, not sure how, but it works pretty good. I'll have to look at work and post what it is. I used to use a two step mil-spec similar to the Novus. If I ever find those, I'll post up what the mil-specs are for that. Used on old style flight helmets and aircraft canopies. One of the two was aggressive, and would darn near chemically melt scratches away in plastics.
