  1. I do carry sterile tears in a little bottle. Works quite well. That and a few minor items should be there even without a first aid kit.
  2. I don't see it either. So I imagined it or it's been edited. Pick one.
  3. You won't have seen this in the news, since the media is suppressing it. The Oregon mall shooter was stopped by a CCW. Local Oregon news station: http://www.kgw.com/news/Clackamas-man-armed-confronts-mall-shooter-183593571.html US News/NBC ran this, but google has taken it off the search engine. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/12/15864523-oregon-mall-gunman-identified-sheriff-says-he-acted-alone-but-motive-unknown?lite That's it, except for a couple of fringe news pickups. Almost no coverage at all. Tell me why that is happening...
  4. I have a pint of sterile saline in mine. 100ml vials can be found. Also bee sting topical antidote. (you know who you are) Gatorade for dehydration Cold packs Hot packs Glow stick Elastic bandages Small sable paint brush A hiking kit is similar. Main motorcycle injuries are foreign objects in eyes, burns/sunburns, minor cuts and abrasions.
  5. Found a guy on line on a Honda forum that said he used a chisel and tapped at the SC1 head gasket to get it started. That's pretty much the way I've always done it if the ton of dead hammer blows didn't work. edit: I've often used a wood chisel, since it's got an angle I think works better. I don't pry with it, I just break the gasket. Don't break tool steel, it goes off like a gun shot.
  6. Thought it was an older story. They would use frangible rounds like a sky Marshall would use. I think I heard about some other school a while back. The teachers take turns being armed at school.
  7. Long range forecast for January 1st is a high temperature of 45F. That will probably change, but it's encouraging.
  8. Brings to mind the phrase: "Well slap me silly..."
  9. I have an old Craftsman electric drill that has a metal body on it, and a two prong plug. It's older than most people on this forum. It will regularly shock the shit out of you. (I learned to wear gloves.) And this is after repeated rebuilds to get it to stop doing that. I should bring it along some day. We could have fun electrocuting each other.
  10. The missing sound track: Hoorah! And up she rises Early in the morning. What shall we do with a drunken sailor? Early in the morning. Put him in the long-boat and make him bale her. Early in the morning. What shall we do with a drunken soldier? Early in the morning. Put him in the guardroom till he gets sober. Early in the morning.
  11. $100,000 worth of ammo? This guy was moving to Beirut or what?
  12. The Aussie 1996 ban was mostly a buyback. It was all old .22cal and old shotguns sold back. Estimates are that only 3-4% of the Aussie "assault weapons" were turned in. Australia, of course, claimed victory. Australia now claims they've stopped rampage massacres. They didn't have a lot of them before, and it's too soon to tell if there will be more. Totals in Aussie firearm assault and homicide went down, but so did all other forms of assault and homicide. Suicides however, with or without firearm, went up.
  13. Today: Short ride to warm up engine. Oil changed. Stabil added. Tank filled. Bike washed. Short ride to enjoy weather. Bike parked in storage. Battery pulled. Good night motorcycle, see you next year. edit: WHAAAAA I want my motorcycle back already!
  14. Depends on the thickness and quality. Try a band saw cut where it won't hurt anything and see what you get. The band saw blade will wear quickly.
  15. I think you'll find that the modern oils do a really good job of cancelling the corrosion. Inside the fuel tank and exterior of the motorcycle is where you'll find corrosion. Not finding corrosion inside an engine probably means the oil's anti-corrosives were doing their job.
  16. I change my oil when I think it should be changed. Short list of reasons (roughly in order of importance): Parking it for the Winter. Overheated the engine oil. Oil is dirty/contaminated by appearance. Oil is visibly lacking in viscosity. Ambient temperatures are maxing for the season. Wanted to inspect the oil for condition of the engine. Bought crappy oil and want it out of there. Left the oil in there for too damn long and it needs to be changed. edit: one more traditional reason: oil is low - fix the leak or change the oil - I do not add oil. edit: I am changing my oil today. Dec 16.
  17. Both the cartels and the government are standard parts of Mexican life. Both have delivered massive massacres. Individuals, yeah, those too: Flores, Oscar, 23 July 31 2005 - 11 dead 2 injured García Antonio, German, May 2 1985 - 8 dead 1 injured Valle, Essrado, 27 Feb. 20 1925 - 6 dead Nieto Avila, Jose Luis, 56 May 6 2002 - massacre by vehicle - 2 dead 22 injured Alvarez, Antonio, Dec. 1 1923 - familicide - 9 dead Loweree, Elfren, March 15 1926 - familicide - 7 dead Ramirez Camacho, José Rosario, June 1962 - familicide - 7 dead Becerra, Bernardino, 34, March 1938 - familicide - 6 dead And don't forget the Nickel Mines, PA Amish massacre. He wasn't Amish, but they were. edit: adding Mexico ordinary murder rate: 25,757 last year, a rate 4 times higher than the US.
  18. It shall never end. Okla. teen arrested in school shooting plot Associated Press – 1 hr 20 mins ago
  19. One of the multiple medical examiners said that all the wounds he saw were from the rifle. And that victims were shot 3 to 11 times each. The sheriff is saying that Adam tried to buy a firearm at Dick's Sporting Goods on Tuesday and failed. So what he did was steal his Mother's firearms. Although I'm still thinking that she bought them for him.
  20. lol, nice landing. Looks ex-Navy. So I'm guarding an Army C-130 we landed at Subic Bay. Pilot says "watch the end of the runway". We hear a howl, and a Navy F-4B Phantom pops over the top of the mountain and roars down the side of the mountain aimed at the runway, gear up. Screams down the runway to the mountain on the other side and pulls up into an inside loop. Rolls out and dives at the other end of the runway, pulls out, snaps gear down and lands. Pulls in beside us with a full load of Sidewinders. Show off.
  21. I discovered that cities and towns have old obscure laws requiring citizens to notify the local police department when they privately sell a firearm. There's a form for that. Obviously these laws are disregarded and no longer enforced. Or rather, were unenforcable.
  22. Yeah, we should mention that carbon fiber dust is very bad stuff. Filters and respirators and clean up required.
  23. I would say abrasive cutoff tools. So I looked it up. From ProTech Composites - Working with carbon fiber
  24. It looked like most were: A. I really don't know how to control a skid. B. I really don't know how to put the front wheel back down. C. With a side of I really don't know how much wheelie is too much. D. And an occasional "I forgot to look where I'm going".
  25. I've been reading up on the psychology behind behavior of this type. Unfortunately, it's not well understood, and not something that can be seen well in advance. Not all people do this. Not all mentally ill people do this. Even people that clearly match the symptoms don't even do this. A very very small percentage of the people with the symptoms will act out their rage or delusion. We'd probably have to lock up a thousand people for every one that is truly capable of the crime.
