  1. Converted my new (to me) SKS from original stock to a fully 922r compliant SBR (Scary Black Rifle) (Well, SGR... Scary Green Rifle) Before: 922r Conversion parts: - Tapco stock, Butt and handguard (3 US parts) - Tapco gas piston (1 US part - compliant now...) - Sear (1 US Part) So that's 5 of the 14 BATFE-Recognized "parts" of an SKS that are now US made and 9 that are Chinese made in my "assembled" SKS (assuming chinese mag). I wanted to make the rifle compliant without having to rely on US mags, so I went with the gas piston and sear to ensure it was well compliant even before the mag goes in. As it happens the supplied mag is US made too so that's even better. It is a little unwieldy though so I have 4 tapco 20-rounds mags on their way to me right now. Here's the After: Never done any "gunsmithing" before so I was a little worried about some of the bits I had to work on to make them fit - basically all revolved around the handguard. - The handguard needed to be shaved by 1/16 at both ends to being the handguard pin close enough to force a strong fit. (The pin didn't exactly line up, intentionally, so when the pin went into place it held the endcaps on the even tighter to the handguard - before modifying the handguard the pin hole didn't even line up enough to see any of the hole) - The pin stuck out too far when it came time to put the upper gas assembly into the rifle. Had to make sure it was set solidly then filed off the excess to allow it to snap down into place - The pistol grip has to be removed to field strip the trigger group. Will have to modify the pistol grip to allow that to come out without having to carry a ratchet set around with me! Now everything is pretty close to where I want it. Just need to add a red dot sight and then it'll be perfect for me. I can also readily convert it back to an as-imported SKS if the new AWB does something stupid. My AR is all where I need it to be too, so I have my pre-ban semi-auto rifles and a ton of big magazines in place before the ban to ensure grandfathering. Next thing to look at: Possibly transferring my rifles to a trust so that I can add new trust members (e.g. pass my rifles on to my son) Using the full-auto trust model, unless the AWB does something stupid about THAT too.
  2. Yep, missed that - thanks. Concentrating on suicide for a moment. If a suicidal person did now have a gun available to them, what do we all think would happen? Would that person kill themselves using some different means, or would that person not kill themselves?
  3. Did you see this: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2012/12/26/bpr-jonathan-lowry-gun-permits-map.cnn Johnathan Lowry of Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence said; "I think this shows a lack of judgement by the newspaper and I think we should not be stigmatizing every law abiding gun owner out there."
  4. How can guns be the first AND second leading causes of death in 15-24yo? (and other age groups where it appears twice) I would like to see those number broken down even more - How many of those guns were legally held versus illegally held. If guns did not exist then another type of weapon would replace guns on that list, of course. The question is: Would the murder rate go down? Or would people still kill each other in the same overall numbers? (or would there be a matching rise in assault cases, basically displacing the criminal events from the murder column to the assault.
  5. I know at least one Subie owner who decided to stay off the road today...
  6. The difference between gun owner records and court conviction records is that one conviction records are for people who have broken the law. We can debate whether the list should exist in the first place separately, but for now I believe the law should allow media organizations to determine and report the permit status of named individuals only when those individuals have been involved in an incident involving firearms, or if the media organization is reporting on whether permits are being issued in accordance with law. Under no circumstances shall any permit holder's details be published in any media unless that permit holder has been involved in a firearms-related incident.
  7. I hope that's his real address and not someone with the same name. Right after the Martin/Zimmerman incident Spike Lee retweeted "George Zimmerman's address" but it turned out to be the address of a person unrelated to the incident - the family was terrorized out of their home.
  8. Snowfall figures were forecast up to 16" at one point last night - now they're down to 5"-9"
  9. I'll save you all the trouble. http://www.maysville-online.com/news/local/article_051d0ae6-32be-55a3-8c37-f0aee97a0bae.html#ixzz1gl6gA3yO
  10. Delaware Meijer doesn't even have shelf space for .223 or 5.56
  11. As a member of the jury I would consider him saying; "This is a 30 round magazine" as evidence of guilt. That is not an assumption, that is a confession. That is not "guilty until proven innocent".. That is him starting his trial assumed innocent, and this video and statement is what would convince me that he was guilty. He would have the opportunity to refute that by providing evidence that the mag was a prop. But he's have to do more than produce a prop mag. He'd have to convince me that the one he was holding was a prop rather than him just going out and finding a prop/nonfunctional mag. Hoisted by his own petard. So to speak.
  12. The logical solution to kids at risk is the one that makes them safer quickly. Feinstein said the '94 AWB "was starting to work" (according to her) when it expired in 2004. Even if the AWB *WAS* the right solution, we wan't wait 10 years.
  13. No. However considering he held it in his hand and said; "This is a 30 round magazine" if I was on the jury I'd need HIM to prove it was a prop, not the prosecution to prove it wasn't.
  14. He is being investigated by the police now. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/25/washington-d-c-police-investigating-whether-nbc-moderator-violated-law/?hpt=hp_t3
  15. Sorry, man, but if I went to Whitehall WM I'd be worried about having to use that ammo to make it out safely.
  16. I gave up on 5.56 online. May check out the WM if I can talk myself into driving into the city today.
  17. Some of those number come from the fact that the UK Govt will reclassify weapons as "firearms" if they want to ban them without objection. That's why pepper spray sand tasers are "firearms" in the UK.
  18. Thought that was Carl Rowan, famous anti-gun crusader. Who owned a gun, it seems. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Rowan#Controversy Jury deadlocked, not retried.
  19. I'd love to hear what the deal is there. They are reporting "one or more shooters". Obviously trying to stop the FF from putting the blaze out.
  20. He wants laws enforced. I say enforce them.
  21. Another thought... Once we have an AWB, that means you can't EVER replace a stolen gun. Don't let yours get stolen!
  22. http://ohioccwforums.org/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=67497 Get the word out.
  23. I think the sex offender registry is a model that shows that this information can be collected and disseminated. A mental heal repository would not be publicly accessible but should be available to NICS and background checks for key jobs that require extra trust, such as police, childcare workers etc. The technology would be easy. The difficult parts would be the politics/privacy/safety balancing act, and the determination of what constitutes "dangerous".
