  1. Now this one, the dealership is 100% in the wrong. Should they buy the car back? There's the grey area. Understand that Mr. Dude, Jr. came into the dealership with a USED car. Even if he only took it around the block, it's used. Definitely new clutch for free. Definitely fix whatever the initial noise was (new transmission?). But DJ can keep the car. Also saw something like this - had a guy buy a 350z brand new, planned to keep it forever as a collector car. At 1200~ miles, it started making noise and was determined that it needed some major internal timing work. Guy wanted the car bought back. Sorry, there isn't a dealer on the planet that will do that. Your car will get fixed, not replaced.
  2. I hate to see the other side here, but if there is a mistake on the contract that has to do with the purchase price, there is a certain period of time BOTH parties have to make the contract void. If the dealership decides to exercise their right to void the contract and Mr. Dude doesn't bring the car back, it's stolen. I worked at a dealership for a few years, and saw this happen - only once, but it does happen. The salesman AND the finance manager applied the same $1000 discount to a car. Salesman had to get the $$$ or have the people bring the car back. Does it look good or make for good business? Nope, but people are people and mistakes do happen.
  3. badtraindriver had one for sale, if I'm not mistaken.
  4. I just don't see how a smoker roughly the size of a 12oz bottle would be very useful. Are the gas ones bigger? BUMP - wish I had room.
  5. Brian, I think Ben wanted it. Hasn't texted me about getting it though, but he had his name in the ring. If not, it's yours.
  6. I'd do brakes before I did plugs and wires. Replace the pads, really inspect the caliper seals, replace the lines and fluid. Replace the clutch fluid if it's hydraulic. All hydraulic (brake) fluid is hygroscopic and will absorb water (and other contaminants) over time. Not using them makes this worse. Broken down fluid = brake fade = OUCH... If the change of fluids and rebuild/clean of the carbs gets the bike to run, I wouldn't stress about plugs yet... Also, side note - one of the CXs I worked on had sat for a bit and the coolant had congealed. I had to take the water pump off to get to something anyways and caught it, but it may be work opening things up if it's easy to do so. At least run some water through the radiator or any other places you can.
  7. Welcome to OR! Good thing you want to learn to work on a bike, you bought a late model Harley. BA-ZING! Here's what's playing on the computer now: http://youtu.be/6yCIDkFI7ew
  8. Love the progress... those Comstar wheels came on everything. You can find just about any size you'd want, front or rear.
  9. Try Carfax.com - even at the dealerships they pay by the report.
  10. I had him fix a tab on my VTR frame where the subframe bolt mounted up. Excellent work.
  11. I can't imagine that this is the whole story. Maybe my faith in our military is a bit naive, but I'd have to think there was some kind of provocation...
  12. This looks like the best deal so far...
  13. You want to take money from the casino, not each other
  14. Ryan would know as well as anyone on here, but it seems to me that the power requirements for a 110w inverter would be quite a bit more than the capacity of the charging system on any bike, let alone a GS500. I'm sure they've improved a bit, but most of the bikes I worked on (1970s and 1980s) has charging systems barely capable of charging the battery and powering a headlamp simultaneously.
  15. Isn't there a different AOC for male vs female in Ohio? Maybe my mind is making this up (getting old sucks) but II though the AOC for female was 16 and the AOC for male was 18. The only reason this stands out is because I remember thinking "that doesn't make walking around sense..."
  16. I would think from now on the first thing she should do to be picky is make sure the dude does not have herpes.
  17. Where in C-bus are you? I'll look at it for you. Can't promise we'll fix it, but two heads are better than one, right?
  18. She looked pretty rough on TV last night. She may have been better in her cheerleading days.
  19. 1) Get a multimeter. Best $20 you'll ever spend. If you have one, proceed to step 2. 2) Hook multimeter to the positive starter lead and ground. Hit starter button. If you have good voltage there, you're starter is the culprit (although not necessarily bad). 3) No voltage there, test it at the switch. Here you're looking for a decided change in resistance when the button is pushed. Some switches will be hot all the time and open when you push the button, some will be closed and go hot when you push the button. Bottom line, resistance should change when the button is pushed. If you don't have a change, the button is the culprit (although not necessarily bad). 4) If button checks good, but no voltage at starter, start chasing the wiring. There's a break in continuity somewhere. On a bike of that age, it's likely a bad ground where the wire connector has encountered rust, gunk, or otherwise. You can also remove the starter (if it's easy to get to, most I've worked with are just 2 or 3 bolts) and "bench test" it. Hook the positive to a positive battery terminal and momentarily ground the starter to a wire connected to the negative terminal. Just be aware the starter will jump pretty good when you do this. Best to do in a vice or wile being otherwise restrained. Make sure your battery is fully charged, of course. Also make sure there are no additional kill switches anywhere. I had a "you're a dumbass" moment with my VTR where I spent several hours trying to figure out why the thing would die if I put it into gear (even with the clutch engaged) before I realized I had the kickstand down. I doubt your older bike would be that elaborate, but shucks, you never know. Check kickstand, clutch, etc. to make sure there's no more switches that could be bad. Hope this helps!
  20. I'd agree the ASE thing is junk, but it's kind of like having a college degree. It may not mean you're smart, or good at your job, or that it's particularly difficult to get (either in terms of difficulty or rarity), but it's an accepted standard. In some cases, it's the first (and sometimes last) question in the interview for an auto technician. Right or wrong, it's the way the game is played. If your company reimburses and is giving you a raise, get as many as you can (I'd stay at about 4 per session). They travel with you wherever you go. Plus you get a patch. Patches are cool.
  21. I saw a blip on the news last night about this and they said he was 17, but that may be his present age. And it is in Kentucky... can't you marry your 13 year old first cousin in Kentucky?
