You can't go wrong with most of the roads down there. However, when you get off the "main" roads, the risk increases of coming across gravel or other surprises.

I never did see the group pics...were they posted. I'll admit I didn't go back and parse this entire thread but I think I kept up with more or less real time.

As told to me by the locals: the local cops are pretty lenient and are generally only out to get people that appear to be riding over their head/out of control, EXCESSIVE speeding, and generous usage of the opposing lane. Otherwise, they know tourism is the main bread and butter for that area so they don't get too crazy. The state police OTOH, which are generally only present on the weekends, are generally sticklers for the speed limit and if you touch the center line they will bust you. I didn't see any staties while we were down there and I did see one LEO on the Cherohala but he was driving along, not sitting running radar. Oh and listen to Tonik about Cafe Rel - white man speak truth. That's some damn good food.

My quest is loud too but I'm on a naked bike and the wind hit me in the neck...if I duck my head down a bit, it's very quiet. I think it depends heavily on the bike.

I think I have close to that much invested in the body, lenses and accessories with my 70-200 f2.8L II lens being the most expensive piece at ~$2200 by itself but damn it's a super fine lens. @OP - I think you'll be happy with the Sony...a guy I know at work who does some nice photography raves about it.

Park it on my street (Colerain area - MW CInci)...it's a dead end cul-de-sac in a very small subdivision. I park my BMW X6 there every day. I also have a currently vacant house in a very nice residential neighborhood in Montgomery where you can park in the driveway. I'd let you park in the garage but I won't be able to be there to let you in/out. We are moving my mother-in-law there next month. PM me if interested and I can give you the details.

^^ this...buy a refurb Canon Rebel (doesn't have to be the newest one) refurb. I know Adorama sells Canon refurbs (i.e refubed by Canon). I've bought 2 SLR's this way with zero issues. Refurbed is the way to go because they get 100% QA inspected whereas "new" only get a subset of the inspections. By the body only. The kit lens is crap. Find a quality do it all lens and learn how to use the settings properly. There are numerous sites for this. If you are just going to use auto mode all the time, buy a P&S camera and save a lot of money.

If you are going to invest in boots, be sure to get ones that go high above the ankle. There are many that are advertised as "riding boots" but are only ankle high which will not protect your ankle from ending up like the picture in the OP and can come off in a crash. Even the high boots won't protect from everything but it mitigates the risk tremendously.
