  3. Yes its a 2009, and I'll buy that. It isn't nearly as harsh if you can get slight wheelspin as opposed to shocking the tires. I get what you're saying. The way the car drives in the snow its pretty easy to shock the tires. and the 4th gen f-body's "ASR" was really intrusive on my car, but I have driven 6 speed cars that weren't nearly as bad. Once I had a good converter in my car is was totally useless under any conditions.

  5. The backdoor I've seen work for a few people is to have it towed to a dealer and tell them you lost the keys at the service desk. A technician goes to parts and gets a key then programs it. Sometimes this works, but it costs more and is not garanteed because it pisses the parts guys off since they are not really following the rules.
  6. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert since I have no knowlege of how the ABS system is programmed. What I do know is that it'll command that the ECM close the throttle on drive by wire cars. It has been my experience with GM that whatever the signal the throttle closes and the engine goes to idle, and on most vehicles takes a second to re-open the throttle (not sure where the delay comes from, if its a timeout function, or safety of the throttle body). Having tuned the 2010 Silverado I had to not allow any closing of the throttle blade (defeating those functions) it would still activate the ABS to try and control it but felt much different and the RPMs would not change. Okay I'm done, I don't feel like arguing this anymore.
  7. As you'll soon figure out any GM dealer has strict policies about the person's ID and documentation for vehicle ownership before they will even look up your key code. So get your ducks ina row and call ahead to find out what they want because i can't even remember the hoops they make people jump through.
  8. No I haven't montiored it on every car, but I have seen the ECM programming on a lot of them and it reduces the throttle blade by at least 60% of commanded. More then enough to make it fall on its face. Have you ever driven one?

  12. Who said anything about driving hard? Trying to pull into traffic on a slippery road and having your car fall on its face is bullshit and dangerous. Wasn't much difference between my Camaro (cable) and Cobalt (drive by wire) in the way it would fall on its face. Only difference is all the Camaro needed was to squak the tires trying to pull out on dry pavement.
  13. It doesn't matter what you do letting a car sit is not good for it. Tires are not meant to sit in one spot, but as stated modern radials come back to life after being driven on. I had a 2006 Corvette Z06 that I performed a used car inspection on last year, it had 146 miles on it obviously it sat most of its life. When I first drove it it rode like total shit and I honestly thought the tires were done, after 20-30 miles they weren't bad (I wanted to replace them anyway due to age but management voted that down). The car really didn't need anything else. The big concern I always have is the lubrication for everything draining down and not proptecting the engine, and the trans drying out. However this can only be avoided by starting the vehicle once in awhile, leaving an automatic transmission sit can be much more detrimental then an engine running dry for a few seconds. The animal concern with the steel wool I haven't ever thought of, and even with steel wool that can be hard to avoid. The most common thing I've seen vehicle come in with those issues is that some animal chewed the wiring, or packed food away somewhere for the winter.
  14. Traction control on most GMs suck ass, it's been permenetly defeated on my Camaro. My wife's Cobalt on the other hand cannot be turned off, you have to apply the e-brake or put the shifter in low range, the Cobalt is a suck ass little shitbox and the traction control is far too overbearing, can you tell I hate the car? Turned it off regularly in my Silverado when I had it, even defeated the throttle control in the ECM.
  15. I use some Stabil and a float charger (C-Tek). I've never had any issues with flatspotting. On small engines and my ATVs I would use some fogging spray to lube the top end but have never done that on my cars. Basically I make sure the Camaro is clean, add Stabil at the gas station before fill-up to ensure mixing and that it gets through the system on the way home. Parking with charger on that I rotate between my bike and Camaro because I'm too cheap to buy a second one. I start it about once a month basically to circulate the trans fluid and get things warm. It's my opinion that storing a car is not great for it, they are meant to be driven. However I won't drive a motorcycle when its cold or my Camaro when there's salt and/or snow/ice on the roads. So I choose to park them simply to avoid other damage or inconvenience.

  17. Working at the dealership level for the last few years I haven't had to deal with this anymore. It may not be the best way to deal with it, but I always ran people off who would come in with their parts store printout and new parts asking me to install them. I would just flat out refuse, the advisors where I'm at now have a discussion with customers first but I don't have to deal with people anymore when they get mad because it doesn't fix their issue. To be brutally honest and to pass along many people's opinions that I have worked with, if you are not willing to spend some money having a professional diagnos and repair your car expect to get an attitude from from those people. As a technician this is how I earn a living, giving away answers especially wrong answers makes thing much worse. The shitty chain stores (monro, midas, NTB, ect) then get similar bean counters who think we should give away diag services with repair, and peope wonder why you get shitty low paid parts hangers at these stores. Sorry to rant, just agreeing with Dyno Brian. Few people who call themselves techs couldn't tell you how alot of systems on cars work, let alone someone at the autoparts store who just learned to use a scanner. I can see the other side because people don't want ripped off and don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on their car in most cases, hence the compounding issues arising from more complicated vehicles, economy, poor training, and a dozen other factors. Again sorry to rant.

  19. Having run both Nittos and M/T radials, obviously the M/Ts were awesome for me. Had the Camaro without much suspension turning high 1.4s in the 60. The Hoosiers have a fantastic reputation but wear faster. The M/T always seemed pretty consitant, so if I was in your position I'd run those and work on tuning. Seeing as how you didn't get a lot of time in the car thus far you may pick up a lot tuning on it. Just my 2 cents.
  20. Having been going to autoparts stores for as long as I can remember with my Dad, likely pre-84 when I was really young, I have never seen the auto parts store as a hangout. I like the idea, but in order for me to be attracted there has to be stuff there thats interesting. In my teenage years of driving I spent lots of time at Pep Boys because they had a lot of stuff in their stores, from rims, to steering wheels, and all kinds of ricer shit. Stores anymore are just places to get maintence items. The parts I'm interested in buying for my cars at this point are usually not even on display at Jeg's (usually not in stock either), let alone any auto parts store. While we're on the topic Jeg's annoys the shit out of me also because they want to know what I'm doing an try to help, again I've figured what I want to do, have an end goal in mind, and don't feel like taking a big portion of my day to explain everything. The only thing I go to Jeg's anymore for is to buy Redline oil, and get nitrous fills, things that are a PITA to ship. I have driven all the way up to Summit to buy something I needed that day rather then even ask Jeg's.
  21. Lots of things can cause vibrations, sounds like you bought quality rubber and I commend you for that it's half the battle, but what type of rims are on the car now? (sorry if I missed it) Proper fitment makes a big difference, ensuring that the wheels are seated flat against the rotor (you'd be surprised how often this is overlooked), proper lug nuts, proper adptors (ie hub rings), properly torqued. When you took it to IPS did they use a road force balancer? Remember that these machines are measuring the tire/wheel assembly, and are capable of calculating rim runout also. You can learn a lot from one of these machines, however sometimes you just can't get past the quality of the rim. I'd be curious to know the road force readings, and how much weight had to be added to each wheel.
  22. Being a tech and knowing exactly what I want most of the time I usually just order the stuff I need from an online vendor, usully RockAuto. I like certain brands for certain parts also, and dealing with it online is much easier then explaining it to someone behind a parts counter. If I have to go to an auto parts store I usually wear my work uniform so at least I get treated like I have a clue, the difference in showing up in my street clothes or a technician's uniform is very noticable, of course that usually gets me answering some dumbass's car question so I really don't like going to the parts store regardless.
