  1. They have continued posting sales adds on Craigslist, for what it's worth.
  2. Lets not forget that the US gov whiped out GM's bondholders in a blatently illegal move that benefited the UAW. The real loss is a hell of a lot more than $10bn when you account for that unprecedented move. The exec branch is basically ruling by fiat these days and no one seems to want to do anything about it.
  3. Thinking about the flipside, have any of you guys actually handed over an envelope of $4-10k cash to a stranger for the privilege of a test ride? No way in hell Im doing that shit! Way too easy for that to disappear and turn into some kind of he said she said. I might give a couple hundred as collateral and sign a waiver assuming liabilty for a crash...
  4. I agree with this very much. It would be a huge job to unwind all the byzentine rules and thresholds for these programs, but thankfully a few different studies have done just that. Heritage did a fantastic study recently where they computed the effective marginal tax rates of low-income workers, accounting for the phaseout of benefits, and showed a huge disincentive to work through a few ranges of income levels. Particularly between $10,000-$25,000. Im trying to hyperlink to the image, but if their site doesnt allow it follow the link below to the writeup. http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2013/01/effective-marginal-tax-rates-for-low-income-workers-are-high
  5. Any time someone brings up the populist gimmic about congressional pay, I die a little inside. Why? Because the person bringing up the pay probably has fiscally conservative inclinations, but they're wasting their time on what isnt even a rounding error in the federal budget. Medicaid Social Security Disability State Employee Pensions Congressional salaries are a red herring designed to distract you from the fact that the above-four programs are time-bombs that ready to rob my generation, and especially the generation of my kids, of their wealth.
  6. $400 gets a lot of used bicycle in the off season. Look for the major makers' (Trek, Giant, Cannondale, etc.) mid-level offerings of 1990s vintage. Expand your search to Columbus-- there is a much larger cycling community here (and people unloading bikes after Peletonia.) Also 51cm is going to be too large if your wife is 5-feet. Get her fitted at a bike shop before continuing your search.
  7. Give me a break. Ive been on the range at the same time officers are doing their twice-yearly "qualifying" with sidearms. The idea of cops actually safely putting rounds into the tire of a moving car is a flipping joke of a hollywood fantasy.
  8. I suppose. But I have occasionally been the beneficiary of an "uninformed" craigslist seller.
  9. I was intrigued by this S4R Monster listed at $2,300 in Columbus, so shot off an email. Dont waste your time. The Listing: http://columbus.craigslist.org/mcy/4197370804.html The Reply:
  10. Getting the most money out of his claim is the only thing that makes sense here. Should he also sandbag his tax deductions under the logic that doing otherwise will cause the rest of our tax rates to go up? Do the best you can, within the rules of the game.
  11. It is not explicitly illegal, though the consensus is that a police would have no shortage of options if he wanted to write you a ticket. From failure to signal a lane change up to reckless endangerment. For me, commuting is the raison d'etre for motorcycle ownership. It saves 20 minutes each way taking 23 into Delaware County in rush hour. Right or wrong, I also feel it is safer between lanes as opposed to waiting to get rear ended. My tune my change if I start racking up tickets, but it would be hard for me to go back to sitting in traffic.
  12. Pretty cool. I wish more riders filtered around Columbus. Get the drivers more used to it so I dont get as many dirty looks...
  13. Im sorry you deleted this, because I completely agree and was ready to cosign. The more distance I get from school, the Weirder the Pledge seems to me. And I am about as far from the leftist hate-America crowd as you can get. I just can't picture the Thomas Jeffersons, James Madisons, John Adams, etc getting behind such a pledge. And in light of the carnage caused by unthinking nationalism in the first part of the 20th century, my kids are going to be getting an extra-curricular lesson on any Pledges of Allegiance. Throw your support behind the ideas and principles, not the bureaucractic and political machine.
  14. Seems like there has to be some degree of bullshit in the drivers story. It would be a bold act indeed to get close enough to reach the windshield of an SUV going 70 mph. Especially an SUV who has demonstrated a predilection for swerving around motorcycles. And to generate enough force to crack a windshield from that awkward angle while maintaining control of the bike? Strains credulty...
  15. Whatever you land on, run it past one of the charity watchdogs: Guidestar - has very in depth info, but captures only the larger organizations. Charity Navigator - mostly the higher level financials, but they many orgs.
  16. Came for the toenail drilling. Stayed for the science.
  17. Props to use for wearing lower body gear. Do you think your knee, etc, would have been worse without it? I havent been motivated to wear overpants thus far, but stories like this make me reconsider.
  18. Totally agree with Smashweights on the superiority of passive indexing. The actively managed fund industry is something of a sham. Stats just dont lie regarding those managers' underperformance. Spend 30 minutes doing your diligence to see this is true, and stop letting these people bleed your savings dry. I love to do my own equity valuation work, but I dont delude myself that with a few hour of research and spreadsheet modeling I am going to outsmart the collective knowledge of the market. Although Apple trading at a 7.5 PE multiple over the summer was too good to ignore...
  19. As long as cops are taught that every citizen encountered is a potential cop-killer until proven otherwise, these kind of incidents will happen. Acceptable collateral damage in the name of protecting our warrior hero police force.
  20. Youre kidding? Lol. What about bonds or real estate?
  21. Roth IRA is as good as it gets, unfortunately it gets phased out over incomes above a certain threshold. I still found a fun way to utilize them for my daughter. She works for me, and the money gets invested in a roth ira for her. A few of the benefits: -the "work" classifies the income as Earned, which is required for IRA investment. -since the work is for parents under $6000 she is exempt from Fica. Its also too low for her to incure income tax liability. -I get the deduction as a business expense. Not a lot of money involved, but $5000 tax free on both sides, earing and withdraw, is pretty good for a 9 month old. Hopefully these accounts wont be raped before her retirement.
  22. Nippiest morning yet riding into downtown Cbus. 5 or 10 degrees colder and Ill need some warmer gloves and overpants.
  23. My stop in Honda Marysville last month was similarly lol'sy. Brought some tires in to get mounted and pick up a few OEM parts. Im greeted by Johnny Necktatoo and a couple of other people emplyed by the service department, if their work shirts were to be believed. By greeted I mean ignored while I stare at them for the better part of a minute. "Sup." "I brought some tires I need mounted/balanced." "Ok bring them in." So I roll up my sleeves, put on some gloves and carry in said tires one at a time with my 6-month-old daughter in my free hand while the honda marysville service department continues their convo. Thanks for the help bros! While Im walking around the show room waiting I wasnt acknowledged by any salespeople. Which was actually nice, but doesnt seem like a great way to make money... Parts guy got the job done, and seeing my daughter lets me know he's trying to get visitation rights to see his. Cool story, working on father of the year, and we're just 2 peas in a pod! The whole place just had a skeazy vibe. If this is the public-facing side of Honda, friggin HONDA, no wonder the motorcycle industry is dying in the US. Sorry for the threadjack Hoblick, just felt like venting.
