  1. There was something about the Gladius seat design that made it expensive or a pain to modify. Don't know.
  2. BTW, according to LAMS, a 300 or 500 is usually acceptable for a beginner license. A 650 might be if it's limited a little.
  3. I was looking at a 2009 for $2900. The only really bad thing I heard was that the seat is terrible.
  4. Wow, after rebate the Q3's come out to $208 from Revzilla. I'd probably want more siping tho. I'm more likely to need water displacement than dry cornering grip.
  5. Uh...tell me this isn't catastrophic. The fluid level is at the top line. Then there's that dark stuff with some light stuff that I can see shifting around when I shake the bike. There is clean green fluid on the rim of the tank, but I did see a little scum on the seal. Not foamy or anything. At least not that I can tell yet.
  6. It's interesting that you could start on a Ninja 650, or modify it and race in the lightweight Isle of Man TT! Of course there's the Ninja 300 cup in Australia.
  7. Why is it common to hear that people tend to learn to ride better starting on a smaller bike? What is it about a bigger bike that takes away from learning? I've been turning slower on my new used 650 compared to the 300. Yesterday I started thinking, imagine that the 650 is just a shell around the 300. hehe
  8. Right. hehe "Last price is $2200." What does that even mean? Maybe it has 40k miles on it and a new cluster?
  9. So, I was pressing my thumb nail against my tires. I could definitely feel that my newer M7's were softer on the surface than the older Roadsmart II's. Of course, I don't have newer Roadsmart II's for comparison. I don't usually feel for heat in my tires, but after riding a while yesterday I could feel heat on the tops of the tires. Side were relatively cool. Does that mean they would still have relatively less grip while leaned? Or do I have to lean more to warm up the sides? I was using the book pressures of 32 front and 36 rear. (I'm thinking about reducing that a pound or two.)
  10. Stolen maybe? https://columbus.craigslist.org/mcy/6066352980.html https://columbus.craigslist.org/mcy/6066269697.html
  11. Wow. 2005 YZF600R, 3300 miles. "This bike is still on its original tires. The bike has always been kept in a garage and moved periodically. No evidence of dry rot, and there's still plenty of tread." Who wants to test ride it?
  12. I still have my Ninja 300, but I want to sell it due to space and needing the cash to cover part of the Ninja 650 purchase. I wanted the 650 for the extra power (still a parallel twin) and comfort. The 300 drops into turns more willingly though. At lower speeds I'd say the 300 is more fun and insurance is half as much. The 300 is also good for learning to feel out the gearing and power band. If I could start over, I might choose a Ninja 500 instead, then move on to something without fairings maybe. Fairings make me nervous.
  13. Title showed 1 mile at purchase. Some places don't allow test rides on sporty bikes, but some do roll bikes outside for display.
  14. That's what I need to hear, I guess. When I was shopping for my first bike, I wanted something that didn't need new tires. Now I just put new tires on the short list. I was about to check out a 2009 with original tires. (Sold before I got to it.) Even I wouldn't bother analyzing changing those!
  15. If I went by this Michelin chart... The tires were born late Nov 2011, then put on a 2012 bike. The bike didn't sell until 2014. So, is the date first used 2012 or 2014? Since 2014 it's been in a garage, parked on a some padding, and on the road for only 1700 miles. The seller mentioned using a conditioner on the sidewalls. Not sure if that's good or not. (Unrelated, but I know the chain feels too tight. Waiting on some spools so I can lift and fix.) I doubt that the bike was on stands with the air pressured reduced, which I've heard can help slow internal oxidation.
  16. Really? I was planning to get Metzeler M7 RR tires again. Same model I put the Ninja 300. The 300 had stock bias-ply IRC Road Winners. The front tracked road groves and the rear was flattened a little and felt weird to me, so the M7's feel great in comparison. The Ninja 650 has stock Dunlop Roadsmart II tires, which seem to have good reviews and cost more than the M7's new. http://www.metzeler.com/site/us/products/tyres-catalogue/Sportec-M7RR.html Maybe I should have gotten an older or naked bike. Having these pretty, just about perfect fairings might mean never needing to worry about the tires in corners! And I guess I should be shopping for sport-touring tires more so. heh
  17. This is interesting, but the road is not a track, of course. Test results: old tyres versus new tyres The tyre manufacturer METZELER has tested a set of motorcycle tyres aged five years and a brand new set of motorcycle tyres in racing conditions and has then compared the results. The five-year-old tyres had been stored properly. The old and the new sets of tyres were driven over a distance of 200 km and tested for 5 laps with the same motorcycle on the test run Vizola. The differences between the lap times between the old and new tyres were so minimal that there was no clear winner and that the quality difference could practically not be determined. 18. I woulda considered it if I wanted that riding position. (I do, but not as an only bike.) Sounds like it was ridden just enough to keep it alive.
  19. Finally found what look like date codes. 4611 rear and 4811 front, so late November 2011. 5 1/3 years old. At least the front is 2 weeks newer??
  20. How's this? 2004 ZZR 600, 4500 miles, $2500 https://columbus.craigslist.org/mcy/6056844427.html
  21. True! I know the recommendation is to replace tires when they're approaching 6 years old, at least for cars. I replaced tires on my Ninja 300 much sooner because I didn't like the feel. I priced out a set for $227. The rear is only a 160-60-17.
  22. The other thing was, it was warm before I got there. I'd have to hear it start cold, I guess.
  23. Two years? They're definitely older than that! The side walls look good. Tread is good. Rear is a little flattened in the middle at 1700 miles. Always kept in garage, so maybe that helps. I've felt the loss of traction of my car tires when they had a few years on them. Don't want that to be my only front tires losing grip!
  24. The tinking is steady at warm idle, unlike in the video. Same sound though. But then, the bike does have an extended warranty.
  25. Reminds me of an old Camaro door. Or you could install an oil slick sprayer?
