  1. Looks awesome... ...except for the part where you're wearing socks with flip flops.
  2. The other companies that showed design concepts to the IRL were much more traditional.
  3. Then why do you have a TB SS?
  4. +1 I think 'fiscal responsibility' is something that should be taught to everyone in school. It's the biggest life lesson everyone needs to know. Also, to Mensan and others that don't think credit score is important if you can pay with everything in cash; When you get a new job your employer will do a credit check and a poor score will reflect poorly on you. I would hate for that to be a reason you're turned down for a position, but if you're in tight competition for a job I've heard it can make a difference. As beer30 said, most people will never have the cash saved to buy a house with cash (i guess that's part of the problem you guys are talking about), and if they did it could be later in life. If I had $200k in a savings account, I would not be spending it all on a house, depending on the amount of time it took me to save that money. Having that liquidity as emergency money is more important than draining my savings. If you have a $1mil in savings and you buy a $200k house it's a different story. I'm all for paying it off in 15 years though.
  5. I honestly tried reading this, but it appears to be the longest sentence in history.
  6. I don't see the point in getting rid of all your CC's. The point's I had built up on my card just paid for two round trip tickets to Tahiti. Just don't spend more than you can afford to pay off that month. I guess if you have no fiscal discipline that's the place to start. I have two CC's and I use them for everything. One gives cash back, the other is a points/miles card. I've never carried a balance and I save quite a bit. So what's the reason he gives for completely getting rid of CC's?
  7. Multi-Air is not quite infinitely variable, but it allows a very large range of variation. It's maximum lift and duration is limited to the lobe of the camshaft, but it can do almost anything in-between (plus you could use a cam phaser to widen the range a little). FWIW, the best man in my wedding has been working on camless engines for the last ~3 years. The technology is getting close. Yeah, the Omnivore is pretty cool!
  8. Multi-Air is not specifically for HCCI, although being able to control valve lift and duration sounds like a necessity for HCCI. Multi-Air is a variable valve lift and duration system, and IMO it's much more advanced than Valvetronic. It allows variable lift and duration, but it can also alter the cam profile, which Valvetronic can't do. Multi-air is one small step from going camless. I brought it up because it's been in development for 15 years and it's just now reaching production. I thought it's a good comparisonto you saying there were HCCI prototypes in the late '90's.
  9. So you lost hope for a GM turn around because of your 99 Monte Carlo and 02 Sunfire? Honestly, go drive a new Equinox, Regal, Lacrosse, CTS, and maybe a few other's I'm forgetting. I think they're pretty serious about HCCI. GM has had a Saturn Aura with a production based HCCI engine in it for at least 2-3 years. They have been refining the control and and calibration and now it runs on a very wide speed range. There may have been HCCI prototypes in the 1990's, but I don't think the engine technology was there to support it. Remember, there were DI prototypes in the 1980's and that's just reached production recently. Also, Fiat had been working on MultiAir for something like 15 years, and that's just coming out. ECU's and sensors are becoming increasingly complex to be able to handle the calibrations necessary to control these technologies properly, which wasn't available in the 1990's. The problem with diesels is the emmission control systems are complex and expensive. With HCCI you could get similar efficiency without adding ~$4k to the sticker price.
  10. Then I'm not sure your car has the feature. The Caliber/Compass/Patriot supposedly have it, and my guess was it was put there as protection for the CVT transmission. (You would be slipping the belt if you brake torqued it) It's just lucky it covers their liability in this situation as well.
  11. Do you own a Jeep Compass/Patriot/Caliber?
  12. Very nice car. Good luck with the sale.
  13. Those were unsubstantiated reports with no proof. The 60 Minutes story that showed a run away Audi was a rigged vehicle with a device that made the pedal move on its own. Independent investigators concluded that the 6 people that sued Audi crashed their cars due to driver error, where their foot slipped off the brake and on to the gas. Even so, the 60 Minutes story almost destroyed Audi sales in the US. Toyota is totally different. They have a large number of accidents attributed to the pedal problem, people who have been killed by it, and it's on millions of vehicles. They also knew about a problem and covered it up. Chrysler is different yet. This recall is only for 36,000 vehicles during a small window of manufacturing, they have a throttle-cut when the brakes and the gas are applied at the same time (so you can always stop), and there are no accidents attributed to it.
  14. Honestly, I think you'll see HCCI and ethanol injection before you see widespread passenger car diesel applications.
  15. ?? you really think it's that bad? The Cruze is a decent size car (bigger than the Cobalt), it has a pretty decent interior, doesn't look half-bad, gets the top crash safety ratings, and gets 40 mpg. What other car this size gets 40 mpg and what does it cost. Would I consider a Cruze Eco as a daily? Sure. I'd be more apt to step up to the RS model, but if I found the seats comfortable I would definitely consider it.
  16. That's what I thought too. That's one fast Cobalt, but I guess everyone gets their panties in a bunch when their VAG is mentioned.
  17. Why would anyone put a cat-back on a RAV? I've heard they're quick, but it doesn't strike me as a vehicle people would typically "mod."
  18. check out the home page http://www.google.com/
  19. I wish GM made the Genesis coupe with a SIDI 2.0L Ecotec turbo. That way I wouldn't feel guilty for liking it so much. Draco-REX - the engines are very loosely related, but from what I have read it's closer to the RallyArt engine as opposed tot he EVO. I'm waiting for someone to use a SRT4 Caliber bottom end and build a 2.4L stroker Gen Coupe.
  20. They can do a blood test, but that will come up negative unless it's taken while you're having a reaction (so I'm told). To diagnose a 'gluten-sensitivity' there really is no definitive way. Usually they will just tell you to try a gluten free diet and see if your symptoms go away. The diagnosis process for Celiac disease is much more involved. Celiac actually damages the lining in the intestines, which causes the digestive issues. A guy at my work was diagnosed with this last year after going through 6 months of tests. The final test had him put under anesthesia, and they went down his throat, through his stomach, scraped a sample off the inside of his intestine, and pulled it out. Then they could look at the sample under a microscope and determine if there is damage. Obviously, the easiest thing to do is try the diet and see if it works. It's believed to be somewhat genetic (my wife's grandfather was diagnosed with celiac about a month before she went on the diet), and it can supposedly be triggered by stress. Supposedly a large number of people with celiac are misdiagnosed with IBS.
  21. No. If you have a gluten allergy you can't eat anything with wheat, barley, rye, or any product made from those substances. So, for example, anything with wheat flour is off limits. That excludes most paked goods, and a lot of soups use it as a thickening agent. Most processed foods have some additve (like mat flavoring) that has gluten in it. So sure, it could cause it to make you eat 'healthier' since a lot of foods can't be eaten. But if you do have the allergy and you have anything with gluten in it, you will most likely be running to the bathroom, feeling ill, tired, bloated, etc. If you have it bad enough that you're diagnosed with Celiac Disease, then your intestines can be extremely damaged from injesting gluten, which can make you lactose/dairy intolerant as well. Most people can stop eating dairy for ~3 months (allowing the intestine to heal) and they can resume eating dairy. If celiac goes untreated it can lead to vitamin deficiencies, osteoporosis, infertility, and cancer. Luckily, right now my wife is only gluten intolerant, so her symptoms aren't as severe. But there's evidence that if you have an intolerance and continue to eat it, you could develop celiac disease.
  22. Thanks. I’ve been to most of those sites that come up on google searches, I was hoping for people that have had personal experiences. Some restaurants gluten free menus are a joke. One of them went something like, "Marinated chicken breast with asparagus and mashed potatoes, *Gluten Free - Order without asparagus and mashed potatoes*" So, uhhh...you want me to pay full price and just get a chicken breast? No sides were able to be substituted because they all had gluten. I like Capp City in Grandview and I heard good things about their gluten free offerings. Although anything besides a salad costs $20. We used to eat at Panara a lot, but it's difficult getting her to eat gluten free there. Her favorite is the broccoli cheese soup, which has gluten. Are all of their salad dressings gluten free? Their menu online doesn't even say what's gluten free:
