  1. I shoot trap in my backyard when ever. I picked up one of those cheap launhers and it works pretty well. I'm going to make a nice mount for it in my yard asap. I've shot through a couple boxes of 130 of them so far and have hit most, but the launcher doesn't throw them really far and I use an 12g 870HD gun with pistol grips so very easy to move around quick and the pattern is very wide so its hard to miss unless its just plain out of the short range.
  2. I use scottrade and do a lot of trades with amounts less than 10K. Your right $14 in/out. They've never given me a problem. There is a little disadvantage to trading with $3K, when you do a buy then sell it takes a couple days for the funds to settle and you also can't go in/out/in/out on the same stocks in the same week or you can get flagged as a day trader and will need much more money to keep a liquid asset to continue trading. One way around this is to set up mutiple accounts if you really get into it.
  3. Or ever look inside a garage door opener? they have a very cool way of doing exactly what your wanting. Might find an old one and adapt the technology. It would be cheaper and less headaches designing circuits. Oh god now I'm brain storming. Just use the main board from a garage door opener, remove the open closed switches from the unit, and put them on your door. Problem solved and you have a remote you didn't have to build;-)
  4. could be done pretty easily with a few transistors for logic, and either switches or photosensors for door position indication. basically if door closed then sensor/switch would be closed or open depending which type you are using, this would apply/remove voltage to transistor and cause power to motor to open door. Then door open sensor/switch would be used to do the opposite. As I was typing this I thought up a way that might be even easier using relays as the logic instead of solid state transistors, but haven't thought it through completely yet. Remember to only use the logic circuit to apply voltage to a door motor circuit through relays to keep higher volts/amps off the logic side or you'll fry stuff.
  5. It wasn't so long ago in Ohio this was the case. Open carry has been legal a long time.
  6. I like Ron Paul's views of rights and small government, but he's a bit "out there" when it comes to international policy, economics and all that.
  7. Call a hotel and see what they use. Every room is a smoking room until they use their machine on it. Though not sure if the smoking ban fixed that since I don't smoke anyway and wouldn't pay attention.
  8. The system I picked up is the DSC Alexor series. For now I have door sensors, interior motion detectors in the right places. Alarm audio panels on all three stories of the house so we can hear it well. I'm about to sign up with monitoring, I'm going to go with cellular as the communication medium since we don't have a phone line. Adding IP is easy, but really I just want the thing to make noise and call someone if there is a problem. It can also be set up to text my phone or I could web in to the system for more $$. The driveway sensor will be cool and I can't wait to install it.
  9. To me the only way that has a good chance of happening it if the guy seeing you defend yourself is a cop. I could then see it.
  10. I just installed one of DSC Security's systems after reviewing many options. Easy to install and set up. I still have to put the sensor out in my driveway, but that will be easy once the weather gets a little better.
  11. I've been going to install a system. Deciding on which company to go with. Anyone have experience with Alarm Force? I'm thinking ADT will have the most customization, but will also be expensive. At my place one of the main features I want is a driveway sensor. This will only need to be used when we are home and I want it as an early warning that someone is coming. Our driveway is over a quarter mile long and is a bottle neck into our property.
  12. Flightsim 2004 Masters of Orion series Civilization series
  13. Best value (size and money) in backpacks has always been the Canon brand backpacks. They are huge and half the price of other brands smaller bags. Same goes for their standard should carry bags.
  14. I drive as a field service tech daily with google maps via my droid x. Not sure what I did without it. Much better than any gps unit, live traffic, construction, satellite view, can pull addresses from web browser, etc. I also use a backup map that's stored on my sd card incase I'm using it beyond the range of cell service but it rarely happens unless I'm offroading.
  15. If it were me I'd do it if you meet the requirements to be able to itemize.
  16. I'd probably pack a 12ga and a sling shot or bow for critters. Then since its SHTF I'd pick up any other nice gear I find on bodies from time to time.
  17. Hmm, will have to try the new rice. I like the white rice they have, but I don't eat there very often. Their price is at that point where I can go get real mexican food for just a couple dollars more. I like the hot salsa also, but could be hotter. When I make enchiladas at home I always use habenaros plus franks extra red hot. So much burning at both ends:-)
  18. Considering the few places that have signs these days I don't look. I'm almost always with my kids so I don't look like a threat to anyone. I just don't carry in the obvious places and don't attract attention.
  19. I decided to get a hand gun because I'd never shot one before and now I love it. So much more fun/challenging than the shotguns and rifles I'd been around growing up.
  20. Love the smith and wesson M&P line of hand guns. I had a hard time deciding between the .45 and 9mm. I ended up getting the .45 because I knew I'd want it if I got the 9mm first. Only downside is they are a little big for most people to want to carry concealed. I carry in an outside the waist ban holster and wear cloths that hide it well in cooler weather, but in summer I'll have to figure out some other way or get a pocket gun.
  21. I doubt many land owners know about it, but a law was passed some years ago that prevents victims from winning lawsuits against land owners while engaged in activities such as 4 wheeler riding, horse riding, etc. You can thank Ohio 4x4 Trail riders and Ohio Multiuse Trails Association for pushing that one through. I've been out of 4x4's for a bit. Busy with my daughters, but I am going to be back at it again as soon as I find a duece and a half that I want to buy. I'm looking for an M35A2C model (air force version) if anyone knows of any around.
  22. That November Rain solo sounds really good, I listen to it all the time.
  23. I did about 70K road miles this year. All within an hour of columbus.
