My daughter is going to buy headphones with her xmas money and grades money she has saved up. We were looking at wireless beats. Are they really worth the money? I guess I just can't help think that some/most of it is hype and marketing. She says she just wants a pair that sounds good. She has the money for beats but she said it doesn't have to be that brand as long as it sounds good. Sony or JVC make decent sets? I'm not talking a $20 set......under $100 though if we can.

That question was asked in the comments section. This was his reply. I don't think that anyone has ever followed a wild, free-ranging deer from birth, to adulthood, to death. And I'm quite sure no one has ever documented that a deer returned to its natal (birthplace) home range to die. About 25% of yearling males DO NOT disperse from their natal home range. And in areas of contiguous forest deer that do disperse travel an average of 2-4 miles. So this location has a fairly high probability (at least 25%) of being within his birthplace. However, I think this would still be really unusual. Of all the dispersing males we have studied, none have ever returned to their natal home range. My guess has to do more with where he was it just prior to going to that distant ridge. Both times he had crossed that road immediately prior to going there.

I'm going to post a good link. I get into this stuff as you might tell. This is a study penn state did where they captured a buck and put a gps tracker on it. Very very cool stuff if you're into deer hunting and some lessons to be learned here. I'm also pretty sure I know what happened to him and maybe why he went to that same ridge out of his range twice. I won't give my opinion though and see if anyone else comes up with the same guess....and it is just a guess. http://ecosystems.psu.edu/research/projects/deer/news/2015/the-life-and-times-of-buck-8917

First question is have you ever taken your hunter safety course? If not you'll have to get that taken care of first. It's a free course that you can study for online but you'll have to go to the class to take the test. Class is free. If you're 18+ you don't have to sit through the class....you can just show up, take the test, and leave if you want. I would suggest sitting through the class though. I've sat through it twice now with both my kids and if you're new to hunting it's a great place to get some pretty important safety advice along with asking any questions you might have and getting good solid answers to them. You can go to dnr.state.oh.us and look up when/where classes are. There is an apprentice license you can get without taking the test but you'll be required to hunt with a licensed person who has had the class. This late in the year and being new to it all I would highly recommend skipping the hunting right now and just focusing on getting the safety course taken care of and scouting areas for next season. That being said and for future reference I'll give you 2 good spots to start. Take into consideration that I haven't hunted either of these places in over 20 years so things may have changed but I spent a lot of time hunting these in the early 90's when I lived in Columbus. 40°15'52.7"N 82°59'03.0"W This used to be an excellent spot. Look at it in earth view and you'll see what I'm talking about. I used to hunt right on that point basically....maybe 40 yards from the tip of it. It starts opening up there from the grassy field area. It's a bedding area that has 2 travel areas to it. I would see them come up that old road bed as well as along the grassy field under the power lines. That gravel parking area wasn't there so foot traffic up that road bed might be an issue. I would still hunt that and do 2 things. I wouldn't park there first off and I would hunt it odd ball times when people won't be in and out of there. Just a place to start....you will probably end up hunting somewhere completely different. I will say don't pass over the most obvious places like this because it's close to the road or close to parking. The 2 biggest bucks I've ever killed I could see my truck from the stand. People like to hike in as far as possible to "get away from everyone" but deer are smart. They'll find those places where people will walk right past them. I killed a 13 point 2 years ago behind an old cemetery that had every tom, dick, and harry walking through it to look at the old stones. I shot him 30 yards from the edge of it. I also shot a really nice 8 point in the exact same tree several years before and had a shooter 8 by my stand last year in that same spot. I didn't hunt it at all this year because that's another superstition or learned behavior I've developed over the years. I'll rest my spots because I think over time deer start seeing each other get shot in a particular area they start avoiding it. I know.....it sounds crazy but I've had spots go from boom spots to nothing way to many times so now I lay out of them for a couple years after killing a few in the same spot. 40°19'05.9"N 82°56'43.2"W This is another area I spent a lot of time in up off hogback rd. There's a bunch of good spots in here so I can't really pin 1 spot that I liked to hunt. There's some good ravines in here and I saw several really mature bucks in here. I would get near the back of it and find some travel routes in and out of those fields behind it. Just make sure you don't get onto private land so stay far enough inside that won't be an issue. This time of year is a great time to get in and scout spots for next year...especially if we ever end up with any snow on the ground so you can see where they're traveling and direction. The work you put in now will pay dividends next season. I spend almost every muzzy season scouting spots for next year. I've muzzy hunted every year for 30 years and have only ever shot 1 deer during muzzy season and that's because I spend most of my time walking and looking. I'm sure I've been responsible for a bunch of deer killed by guys hunting near me since I was a 1 man drive. Good story about the hogback spot. I was probably 19-20 at the time and worked a 3rd shift job. I would get off in the morning and go hunt hogback until 2-3pm then go grab a couple hours of sleep before going back to work. Rinse/repeat for most of the week. I did that one time and fell asleep in the woods. I mean a hard sleep. I woke up cold as hell and it was pitch black out. I had no idea where I was. Since I normally quit at 2 or 3 I had no flash light. It was like I broke every rule of being in the outdoors but like I say....I was young. It took me forever to figure out where the hell I was at and find my way out of there in the dark. By the time I got back to my truck it was almost time to go to work again so I just went back to work and never made it home that day. Lesson learned.

Looks like it'll get the job done. Still have another month of bow season left. Have to get out there now. I'm going Wed. to spend a day in the stand. Also going to put out a couple trail cams I got for Xmas. Theres a big Daddy I've seen the tracks of all fall on a road bed that I haven't been able to catch up to. Want to check out a little area I suspect he's using

Santa Claus is full of magic and even he laughs at those requests. I rarely get much for xmas. The wife and I usually just do something small for each other and save the rest for the kids. I did pick out a trail camera that was getting clearanced and had her wrap that up but I bought it a couple weeks ago. The kids get far more out of xmas than we do and I really do get a lot more out of watching them open stuff than me opening stuff.

I'm quickly just approaching the old and out of touch category because I don't get it. I would have a problem spending all that money and seeing a can of spray paint or a caulk gun pointed at my car.

some people are religious, some people golf, some people go out to the bars, ect ect. I just hunt. I was married in my early 20's to a girl that always gave me grief about how much I hunted in the fall. It created constant friction when I would go....well...friction for her because my ass was going hell or high water. Before I got married the 2nd time we sat and had a long talk about how important it was to me and that if she was going to have a problem with it we should work that out now before we were married. It's never been an issue. She never says anything to me about it even though I know on occasion it bothers her (but I still go ). She even takes vacation during the rut so I can go for a full week. I go thanksgiving morning some years and never a word from her. I hit the wife lottery.....just took 2 tries.

couple things to think about when choosing is size and weight if you're going to hunt with it much. I'll use 2 from your list. jackal is 36"L x 28.25"W and weighs 7.7 lbs recruit recurve is 32.5"L x 27.5"W and weighs 4.9 lbs The trade off is going to be speed. The recurve is going to be slower. 245fps vs 315fps with the compound. IMO I would rather wag around a smaller and much lighter xbow up and down hills all day than to have the speed but that's just me. 3 pounds may not sound like much until you've had to carry it a few miles. Some people speed is more important because it will keep a flatter trajectory out further. My buddies older recurve xbow is great out to 30 but past that the bolt starts dropping like a rock. At the end of the day I would recommend going to a shop and shooting a couple side by side and one of them will call to you. That's the best way really to pick out a bow in general. You have to shoot it and see how it feels. Good luck with whatever bow you pick out. Hunting has been a passion for me for over 30 years. I live 8 months a year so I can enjoy the 4 months of bow season. I miss weddings, funerals, birthdays, ect ect if they're held in the fall. Everyone that knows me knows that so they know if they get married or die between October and January I won't be there. I even planned my kids births around hunting season. Got a little greedy with our last one because I wanted my wife's maternity leave to fall during bow season. He came a little late and has a b-day of oct 10th. We celebrate it during the week if it falls on a weekend.

got a pretty decent snow here today.....I'll be trying to break the worlds most consecutive donut record on the quad tomorrow when the kids get home from school. Either that or the record speed towing 3 kids on a sled behind a quad. Hell.....might go for both at the same time.

this ended up pretty much as I expected it would.

she likes to write and draw on the pc so I see that being it's main function for awhile. She doesn't need a ton of computer.....sounds like the one we bought will work fine for her then. At least for a while.

is noise an issue? Both of those would be pretty loud. I have a couple gens. I have a 5500 that's basically the same as that Wen. I bought it at Pep Boys about 10-12 years ago. It's loud as hell but it gets the job done. I also have a Champion 2000i that I use for the camper during the winter when I boondock. It's an awesome little gen that's really quiet but wouldn't be up for everything you're wanting to run. If I was picking one of those 2 it would be the champion 4k. Personally to run a house during a power outtage I would want more than 4k watts but then your budget goes up. Another thing to consider is gas usage. My 5500 uses 6 gallons of gas every 12 hours or so. That adds up to be a shit load of gas when you're running it for a few days. That's why I say the champion 4k.....it'll be a little quieter and use less fuel.

the sad thing is I had a version of this conversation with a buddy of mine this fall. He knows less than jack shit about cars. He had a flat and we changed it. Before he left he rolls his window down and says "the truck is saying the spare tire has 7 pounds in it". I told him it was still reading the flat tire in the back of the truck and he says "how's that possible? It's not hooked to the truck anymore". I told him he should get out and check the wire going to the spare tire to make sure it was connected.

Little late for this I guess as my wife has already ordered but I can always return it I guess. My 10 yr old daughter wanted a chromebook for xmas. I know shit about them but after a the little reading I did I couldn't really find a reason why she specifically wanted a chromebook. I think maybe they use them in school or something. We ordered this instead since it was roughly the same money. Thoughts? POS? Suggestions? Should we have just bought her the chromebook? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JLCKP1Q/ref=twister_B01L9OZU32?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I learned to tune my car.....and I'm a dumbass Between the books and the info on the forums it's definitely something you can learn if you have the desire. To add with what has already been said I would also recommend to spend a ton of time learning the logging side of things and making your own PID's and what not. It really helps if you have a good grasp on setting up PIDS, what the data is telling you, and how to apply it.

I went from a note 2 to a droid turbo 2 and have had it ever since. I really like the droid and it has 2 features I use that none of my other phones had. You "chop" it to get the flashlight to come on and "twist" it to get the camera to come on. I use the shit out of those 2 features because I use one or both of those things daily. Battery life is also pretty good with it and it has 32 GB plus an sd card which was important for me.

notice near the end when the 2nd dog was circling back in and it looked like the roo was going to go for it.....Jack Dempsey there was reaching for his knife. If it grabbed that 2nd dog shit was gonna get real.

The Top will be the next one I try. Wife and I have done Smith and Wollensky the last 4 years. Last year was the worst steak I've ever had anywhere......including Golden Corral. Shitty steak and it'll be my last Smith and Wollensky steak.

there are plenty of deer to be had around columbus but that's where you'll see a ton of hunters. Look into wayne.....that's where you can get away. Granted....it's a lot further for you but to get away on your own you're going to have to drive.
-
That's the difference between bow and gun season. I gun hunt although I'm not a fan of it. While bow season is more popular now than its ever been there are still tons of areas you can hunt and have it to yourself. The area I hunt is thousands of acres. Not hard to get off by yourself. I've went days without seeing another person in the woods.!

sounds to me like someone who's never dealt with a game warden......go ahead.....hunt the parks they're usually pretty understanding and willing to listen to your interpretation of the law. 99.9% of all hunters aren't drunks shooting from treetops as the idiot geeto67 would have you believe by spewing that ignorant garbage just as the same 99.9% of the people that spew that don't bite pillows on a regular basis. I've hunted public land for 25 years. I wasn't familiar with it either when I first started. I put in the work and got maps and familiarized myself with it. Not near as easy as it is now with the internet having just about anything you wanted to know about the land on it including satellite views. I did it the old way with topo maps. I don't and have never crossbow hunted so I can't really help you there. I will recommend you look at regular bows too. They're not point and shoot easy like a crossbow but they're much safer. Look at the diamond infinite edge which is made by bowtech. The mission craze bow made by mathews is also a very good starter bow. Both are bows built for starters but are so adjustable that anyone can use them. Me and my 12 year old son both shoot a diamond. He's only drawing about 30 lbs now so he can't hunt with his yet but I'm drawing 70 lbs with the same bow.

sorry to hear about your dad.....it's not an easy thing to go through for sure. My dad died at 62 in 2005 and my mom died a year later at 62. It sucks and there's still very few days that I don't think about them. My dad never got to meet 2 of my kids and my mom never met my youngest. She died about the time my daughter was 1 so my daughter has no memory of either of them. I feel ripped off and feel like my kids got ripped off because my parents were built to be grand parents.....they would've been great at it. Both my wife's parents are still alive and neither spends much time with them (divorced). My wife doesn't speak to her mom so she has zero contact with them and has only met our youngest 1 time briefly at a funeral. Can you tell I'm bitter about the grandparent situation? Like someone said....spend as much time as you can with him and make sure you tell him you love him. Ask him as many questions as you can think up. Sorry for what you guys are going through.

kinda went the same way.....kenmore fridge and stove from sears though with a maytag dishwasher. Didn't like most of the dishwashers....who decided to vent most of them out the side of the door directly into the cabinets?
