  1. How about you shut the fuck up until you can comment respectfully. This post is about what computer to buy not about how much you know or think you know about computer architecture. I've had my schooling and I understand the concept of pipelining. I wasn't making the argument that on the fact of sheer clock speed the p4 is quicker. You have to take more into consideration than sheer clock speed obviously and the fact remains a user on a mac mini g4@1.4ghz vs a user on a 3.2ghz p4 system, the p4 system is going to be the "quicker" of the two.
  2. The mini running at 1.4ghz vs a 3.2ghz pentium is definatly a difference, but for what you describe you're not going to notice a big difference. I notice apps take a couple of seconds to pop open, but like I said I use it for my day to day machine, and it does everything. As for the windows vs os x argument I could care less. I'm a UNIX admin by trade and OS X makes me feel at home since I use a Sun box for my desktop at work. I'm all about using the right tool for the job and for day to day usage the mac gets the job done. Myself I would probabally opt for the laptop in your case since they both are going to do the same thing and the laptop will have a lower total cost since its all contained. You can use any usb keyboard/mouse combo and any monitor on the mini btw so if you already have stuff no need to upgrade.
  3. I use my mac mini for all my daily tasks ( surfing, email, chat, pictures, etc. ) and the only reason I keep my pc around is for playing cs. Tiger is the new version of OS X. My mini started it with 256MB and it was definatly not enough (before or after the upgrade to Tiger) so I upgraded to 1GB. I would definatly recommend getting the ram upgrade up front as installing it was a pain. The airport card is a built in wireless card. As for the nay sayers you can talk crap about the Mac all you want but I would take it over my windows box any day of the week. Its small, quiet, and it just works.

    Vacations...

I go to the Pacific NW quite often (2-3 time a year). Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and Whistler are all pretty great places to visit. I usually mountain bike or snowboard depending on the time of year and I have quite a few friends in the area. If anyone is planning a trip that way let me know and I can give you some good suggestions of things to do in the area.
  7. I'm running the Patriot ram in my system, pretty good stuff for the price. Also check into the nvidia 6600GT based cards vs the ati radeon 9800. They should come in less on the price and mine out performs the 9800 I used to have for sure.

  9. The pizza shop where my sister works in Hilliard has been robbed 3 times in the past couple months. I also heard a number of other businesses in the area have been robbed. Its probabally the same guys doing all of this stuff. Things just aren't as safe as they used to be.

Sorry I haven't been paying attention to this thread. Not sure what the new pay ranges are as they just changed because all the job titles changed. Under the old ranges you could slot anywhere from 50-90k depending on exp an negotiating skills. Some more info on what the job is/is not so people understand. This is a production engineering support role. We are last level of escalation for problems on production systems. Also we do production engineering stuff such as security audits, system patching, etc. We are also very seperated in our role and the only things we touch are the OS and hardware. All application stuff is done by application teams.

On my team you would see Linux maybe 5% of the time, but knowing linux well will give you the skillset to exceed. Really looking for general administration skillset hardware troubleshooting etc. If you want to shoot me your resume I can take a look. We actually have 4 positions hiring now and probabally 2-3 more next month, just nobody to fill them.

Nobody with any experience at all? May even be willing to look at a more entry level person if the skills base is right.

  16. More technical sounds good, if only I wasn't so out of shape I might die. Gotta get worked up to go riding in Vancover again at the end of the summer so I gotta start hitting the trails alot.
  17. VPP smile.gif http://www.santacruzbicycles.com/graphics/bikes/blur-lt.jpg You guys going again tonight? If I don't get paged by work I wanna try to make it.
  18. Last time I was out there were some teeter totters, and a couple downed trees which were supposed to be used like balance beams. Some drop offs etc.
  19. You need a square taper style or ISIS?
  20. They always close down the good stuff. Do they still have any of the "stunts" out there they used to, or did they remove those too?
  21. We are going to be hiring 1 (possibly 2) unix admins on my team at work ( JPMorgan Chase/Bank One). Production OS and hardware support for systems running Solaris, AIX, and Linux. Looking for someone with 2-5 years experience who really knows what they are doing. If you are solid in unix in general then there really is no OS preference. If you're interested let me know and I can try to get you into the candidate line up. Any questions don't hesitate to ask.
