you know, I'm no lawn care expert, but when I was a kid, my grandparents kept a camper on lake Erie all summer. It sat on the edge of a hill and there was probably a 30' drop down to the lake where the boats launched from. I asked my dad how the grass going down the hillside was always mowed short, as it would be a huge PITA to mow up/down. he told me that mowing hills, you mow sideways. from what I'm reading here, it sounds like everyone is thinking you should be mowing up/down. I feel like it'd be a hell of a lot easier mowing it sideways.

good luck with this. my sister went to Paul Mitchell and got a job at a salon for a couple years not making squat, so she quit. another girl I know went there and now works at great clips. so many girls want to go to cosmetology school but so few make it in to the big name salons. they all seem to think that's where they're going to land though.

think he would be interested in cutting away bad caulking, installing new J channel, and re-caulking exterior windows? I assume it's not a big job, probably something one person could knock out in a day, so I don't want to bother someone with little jobs if they mainly do bigger projects.

Just to update - I ended up going with Jack Oldham. It's been about a month now. I'll give an honest review. Since he's retired, I don't think this will really matter. But, he was "ok". The old saying is "you get what you pay for". I got top line windows (Polaris Ultraweld double pane, glass breakage warranty), 2 doors, front door with a 1/2 wagon wheel at the top, grids between the glass, rear door 1/2 lite with blinds between the glass. Windows, from the inside, look good. When I stuck my head outside, the caulking looked horrible. There was caulk in and over the weep holes. The weeps have a small flap that will let water out, and shut otherwise so dirt, bugs, etc don't get in. If there wasn't caulk over the weep holes, it was still hitting them and holding them open. He told me it wasn't a problem because how the J channel it, it would keep any water from getting there. Well, the weeps are there to drain any water that gets to the slider tracks of the window...nothing stopping rain from hitting the window and going straight down. He went around before the end and cut the caulking back to let the weeps open, but it's still bad. I plan to order new weep covers from Polaris (I only need 8 windows/16 covers) and have a buddy come out and at the very least cut away and recaulk the exteriors, if not redo all the J channels. The doors were better. I've got a few marks on the doors that I had to use the touch up paint on, and a couple small marks that I can't seem to clean off and don't want to use paint because of where it is (the paint would probably stand out more than the mark). His reinstallation of the trim was ok at best. Joints don't line up perfectly like before, used silver nails on dark trim that stand out, hammered them in to the point where I can see hammer marks on the trim. Now, I know this all sounds horrible, but let me say this. My house is a $125k house. I don't have anything fancy, and as such, I don't really expect Muirfield quality work. In addition, his price was insanely lower than the others I got. Just from Advantage alone, he beat them by I think around $2k. For 8 top of the line windows and 2 doors, I paid ~$4800. Even if I have to spend $200 on new J channel, caulk, and labor for my buddy to redo the exteriors, $50 for new weep covers (might even be less), and $30 for new trim and stain, I'm still $1700 less than the next estimate. I would say he was probably starting to slip up with his age. Caulking was my biggest complaint, and he probably should've hired someone to do the exterior work. The interior caulking looks fine, windows slide properly, lock, etc. Jack is a good guy. Sad to hear he had a heart attack. Hope he's ok.

This is why I stick to road cycling. MTB you have to load up the bikes to go somewhere. I can get on my road bike at home near Easton and go where ever I want. I rode to a family reunionat the Delaware dam a couple years ago, my grandmas place for a family event near Mt. Vernon. I have friends with extra mountain bikes that let me ride their shit the few times per year I want to go, or I watch for the manufacturer's demo days. What kind of bikes did you buy?

I usually do mine every April at tax time and use this site. They try to get you into bullshit monthly subscription stuff, but once you get past it, it's not bad. I'll probably pass doing it this year as I saw it a couple months ago when Marc did my refi.

I'm getting a couple couches from my brother in law. They're decent couches, just that their dogs have laid all over them for a while and need cleaned. I can do that no problem, but one has a small area where they chewed a hole in it. It's a dark brown microfiber. Any idea who would fix this, and do I need to take the whole couch or will they come out to do it? I can get pics once I have the couch at my place.

Today is actually 2 months from surgery. I've been walking without even a cane now for about 2 weeks. Even built up the courage to take the stairs at work. 5 flights to my floor. Did it twice yesterday, once today. Hip was a little sore today after doing it so I used the elevator later on. I've still got a little pain in my hip, but 2-4 ibuprofen and maybe a couple tylenol per day and I'm ok. No visible limping, but I can also tell that I'm not walking 100% normal. Maybe 90-95%. I'm still amazed at this much progress in 60 days.

Right. If I saved $95/mo, they'd be paying me $19/mo. I haven't shopped around in a while, because State Farm has been good to me. $76/mo isn't too bad for full coverage. Fairly clean driving record for a while now. Last accident was in 2008 I believe. No tickets that I can recall since then.

Passat or Legacy and where to buy?
evan9381 replied to TimTaylor751647545500's topic in Passing Lane
Tim, I'm sure things have changed since my Legacy was new (2009), but man...the gas mileage on this thing SUCKS. I track my gas mileage on every tank, and the highest I've ever gotten is 23.8. I drive Easton to Dublin daily, so it's highway, but more stop-and-go highway driving during rush hour...even on a long road trip I think I was ALMOST at 26. Still, that sucks. Other than that, it's been a great car. No issues (bought at 39k, now at 95k) I've had to address, runs well, never gotten stuck in snow, despite going through some deep areas. Just the AWD kills the mileage. Edit- Just looked. I drove to Louisville early October for a bike ride. With my bike on the roof rack (which isn't the best for efficiency), I still only got 22.4mpg for 343 miles. -
What in the actual fuck did I just read? This belongs in r/justneckbeardthings

The Thermaweld (next line down) have a slightly thinner frame, but it's not supposed to be a whole lot more over the Ultrawelds. I think the guy told me it's like 1/2" or so. My next question, and I might as well put this out there for everyone, is, do you know what this guys deal is as far as licensing and stuff? I checked on City of Columbus and they don't have him listed, but then again, they don't have the first guy I talked to either. Maybe licensed through somewhere else? I found Jack licensed with Columbus in 2012, but not the most recent 2/1/16 list they put out. I also didn't find much on him or the company searching around online, such as other people who have used him. Hopefully he can give me some references and other houses to check out their work. I've seen 4 houses from the first guy, and they look fine from the outside, but who is to say there aren't issues I can't see from the inside/up close. Just hoping this massive price difference isn't a "too good to be true" deal. I trust you, but also want to make sure I'm making a good decision since it'll be a long term investment.

Yep. That's the top model. When he was like "well, to upgrade you're looking at about $10/window more" I almost laughed because it's such a minor increase.
-
Polaris windows? If so, which model? Definitely send me some pic. 374-7741

So he's coming out Saturday to see what I've got and measure and stuff. I will say though, once I can get a few addresses of his work to check out, if it's good, I'm going with him. Quotes from my other guy were about $3800 for mid range stuff and $4200 for top of the line. Jack told me for mid range line about $320ish/window installed, and to upgrade would be about $10/window more. For the non math wizards, even at $350/window, that's $2800 for the top model, installed. $1400 less than my other quote.

Hmm...looks like I've got another call to make...

long story shortened, I found a post on Reddit where a guy made a big guide to windows...basically said stuff the box stores sell (Pella, Anderson, Jeldwen, etc) are all junk. They use old technology, metal spacers, etc. Said Rosatti is junk because their frames are so big, it cuts down A LOT on the glass area. This guy even went as far as researching state by state the window manufacturers that looked best. For OH, he listed Polaris, Softlite, and Vinylmax (I think that was the name of the 3rd one). I emailed Polaris which is just a wholesaler, and they sent my email to a sales rep who sent it to a company here local. I checked with other companies that did Polaris and Softlite, but the prices weren't competitive with the first quote I got. The 2nd company that came out did both Softlite and Polaris, but the only way to be close was to do Softlite and the manufacturers sale which ended like 3 days later. Guy wasn't pressuring me at all, just a "here's what it is" mentality. I appreciated that. He was only at my house about 10 minutes to measure the windows, said it's X per opening, but after 12/31 the sale is over and the prices go back up like 35%. I also talked to a guy from that same thread who knows the guy I'm dealing with and said he's a good guy and they do good work. So, Polaris is the window brand, Thermaweld line (it's their mid-range and supposed to be best bang for the buck). I've got 8 windows and he's got me at about $3800. His name is Cale Bowling and he's with Advantage Exteriors. The doors though are looking like an extra $3k+, which isn't quite in my budget right now.

I've been looking around online and people are saying Lowes contractors are hit or miss. Some said that Lowes kinda gets the bottom of the bucket because all of the good ones have their own established business. I guess it makes sense, but first hand testimonials are good as well.
-
I'm getting new windows soon. I've already found who I'm going to go with. I asked him about doors as well, and the prices are more than I want to pay for this house. I've found doors at Lowes for <$350 that are what I want and will be fine for the house. Does anyone have someone good that can do all this? Probably need to have the doors measured, as we installed some subfloor tiles over the slab that raised the interior floor about 1.5", and thus we had to cut the bottoms of the doors so they'd be able to open. I planned to replace the doors when we did all that, but life got in the way. I *might* need to order custom cut doors, at like 78-79" vs the standard 80-81". On the other hand, if there is enough space ABOVE the door to just put a 1x6 or so at the bottom and raise the door frame up and use a standard sized door, I'm fine with that. Bottom line, I'm tired of my floors being ice cold 2' from the door. I know I'm losing a lot of heat right out of that space.

Gf said she'll take it. Might be next weekend before we can pick it up. If that's ok, text me 614/374/7741

There is a hex key bolt underneath. Stick one in there and twist it around a bit. Might break up the jam.
