  1. I feel like any bike is a bit of a chore. Doing safety checks and gearing up for a commute is a pain in the ass... I just do it because the ride is worth it. If I get the XR100 street-legal, maybe I'll feel differently about the process, but gearing up still takes time, and 50mph is plenty fast enough to rip up some skin.
  2. I didn't know it was that bad. heal up quickly. insert your own joke about masturbation as physical therapy.
  3. Hats off to the semi driver. Those rigs aren't cheap, not to mention whatever cargo he's carrying. off-roading in a tractor-trailer is a huge risk when you're attempting to avoid people who are probably already dead.
  4. I have those gloves. Actually, I had 2 pair of them before my dog ate one of the blue ones. Decent set of gloves for street/track use. The red set is still my backup/street pair, and I used those for 2+ years on the track. Crashed the blue pair once, and they faired well.
  5. wiring it to your house is the way to go if you intend to remain there for the foreseeable future, otherwise, I think it's a lot easier to just run the cord through a window. where to keep a big noisy generator while it's running is the bigger question, IMHO. I keep mine on the back porch during the day, and would intend to move it into the garage over night. I need to rig an exhaust extension though, so that I can route the fumes through a flexible gas line, and out the door. Either of those would power a couple of fridges. The 5500 would do almost everything (essential) in the house. I like the idea of having a second breaker-box with a throw-out switch between them. 1 is your regular breaker box, and the second is not connected to utilities. That second one only has essential lighting and outlets in your home. that's the generator box.
  6. How do you figure? Other than traffic, I can't see how the influx of democrats would affect anything. It's not like they move in an vote...
  7. I really don't care that much if people are racist or discriminatory or racially insensitive - how they feel has no effect on me, but it takes a special kind of stupid to make the statements featured in that first clip I posted. It's just asking for problems.
  8. and then the follow-up http://youtu.be/tkKnjKRZCLs
  9. Who wants to pull up some old media clips of this guy saying dumb shit? I can't remember why, but I know I disliked Ray Nagin from the beginning of the Katrina coverage...
  10. Are your new RD duties keeping you off the bike?
  11. I thought that would be for sale by now. The hot rumor is that you only race sail boats now
  12. Are you implying that this is even remotely uncommon?
  13. that's unfortunate. I'd have fought that as well, and I'm extremely surprised at the result. My understanding of the law is not that you need to leave an assured clear distance for any scenario, but rather enough room so that if the vehicle in front of you panic-brakes, you are able to avoid contact with that vehicle. The difference between avoiding a stationary object that is suddenly visible and an object that is traveling your current speed, and must also brake to 0 mph is insanely different. Frankly, I don't believe the former is humanly possible with any other traffic on the road. It takes even the highest performance vehicles around 100 feet to stop from 60mph. Realistically, people on the highway are driving 70mph, and most vehicles are going to take 150 feet or more to stop from that speed. That's ignoring reaction time. Leaving 150+ feet between vehicles is ludicrous. The standard "one car length for every 10 mph" is more reasonable, and still unrealistic. As a motorcyclist, and as someone who was recently involved in a 25+ car pileup on the highway, I leave a lot more following room than most drivers. I might actually be close to that 150 feet, but the people behind me don't. If I actually panic-braked, I'm sure I would be rear-ended 95% of the time.
  14. I'm extremely happy about this. Lots of money coming into the city, and the chance for Cleveland to make a positive impression on the country. I'm also pleasantly surprised by how intelligently my more liberal friends are handling this. They seem to be acknowledging that it's good for the local economy, despite their disagreement with the party line. I'm just waiting for one of them to accuse me of being Republican... I haven't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 2004.
  15. That wasn't the scenario, but I see your point when you phrase it that way.
  16. They have made exceptions before. I know when I was in STT's beginner group one of the instructors was doing private sessions with her friend all afternoon. Yeah, she was an instructor, but it's not unprecedented.
  17. You'll get instruction, just don't be shy about asking for it. Shit, if we both end up with a day, and the STT staff will allow it, I'll tow you around as much as you want. I'm not going to be setting any lap records on a 500 lbs. bike with sport touring tires, but I think I can stay in front of you ;-)
  18. Isn't that the case for virtually any Japanese inline 4? I love the torque of V-twins, but I think the I-4 has proven itself to be superior, if not quite as simple.
  19. I do have a title. it's even in my name A street-legal 100 would be a ton of fun, but I would probably put more money into the charging system, etc. than it's worth. How long do I have before this goes down? would be a great excuse to spend money on a stator for the 100.
  20. oh hell yeah. Interested. the big tuna needs to stretch its legs and show some newbs on real sportbikes how it rolls!
  21. Where is the wedding? I forgot I used to date a girl who is now a high school director. One of her former students is cello major in BW's conservatory. I'm sure he can handle 1 song for a reasonable price if travel isn't too far.
  22. This is the Corvette Museum, correct? WERA is looking into booking there, which means there will be Friday track days prior to the round (I hope). The track does look pretty awesome, and they have a ton of configurations. that straight will get boring, but the cars need a lot more space to stretch their legs. That's why Gingerman expanded their back straight.
  23. good! I was to the point where I was thinking of buying this and just paying Barnacle Bill to alter it for me... You can't find a decent suit for $100 very often.
