I think Musk fairly sincere in his altruism, but the choice could make good business sense.

-This is going to attract a lot of startup activity to the Tesla platform and build up their ecosystem.

-2 of Teslas biggest limits to growth are currently infrastructure and consumer acceptance. More electric cars on the road will help on both fronts. There are going to be big network effects in the electric car market for a long time to come.
