I'm kinda suprised this hasn't been posted yet, considering the size of the crash and the fact she had almost no injuries. I saw it live and had figured she was dead, or at least broke a bunch of bones.

 

P.S. Don't mind Derek Daly, he's a horrible commentator.

The worst NASCAR crash I've seen, or at least compared to this crash, was a year or two ago. It was a truck race at a 2 mile oval, I forget which one cause they all look the same. A truck was spun and launched into the fence on the front stretch and the truck basically disintegrated and all that was left was the cage around the driver. He lived but definitely didn't walk away.

That was an ignorant statement. There have been plenty of NASCAR crashes similar to that where the driver walked away.

 

 

Then there are crashes like Dale Sr's, and you are left wondering how he didnt just walk away.

There are many reasons why Dale Sr died in his accident. NASCAR's are A LOT safer now then they were in 2000-2001, mostly due to his death. Now NASCAR does not leave safety regulation up to the individual team.

My aunt Liz is a doctor at the hospital he was was taken to, and she said that when he got there, his whole face was swollen, and bruised, but not from contact with any part of the car. The way she described it, was that the reason he did not survive was soley based on G-force. You know how your brain floats in a membrane of fluid? Well what appearently happend to him is that his brain litteraly smashed into the front of his skull. It damaged his brain and eventully lead to internal bleeding that could not be stopped.

 

No amount of safty equipment can prevent something like that. It was just a combination of specific events that all ended in disaster.

That is an entirely incorrect statement by all accounts of his cause of death. There have been CART and IRL crashes that have logged over 100g's at impact, and the driver has either walked away or survived after recovery. Rally cars (which are more like NASCAR's in their construction) have incredibly hard impacts with odd shaped objects and routinely walk away. Sometimes they don't, but that's because intrution into the safety cage, not injuries due to deceleration.

 

The cause of Earnhardt's death on multiple investigations has been listed as basilar skull fracture caused by his head not being restrained. Your body stops moving and your head is still going 180mph, so it snaps with such a force that the base of your skull fractures from your neck. A HANS device is worn to prevent this type of injury.

 

There was contention that the seat belt tearing allowed his head to contact the steering wheel, causing his death. But an investigation found that even if his head didn't contact the steering wheel he would have died. Also know that his lap belt tore because of improper installation. Dale thought the belts are uncomfortable so he had the crew modify their mounting.

 

There's plenty of equipment that would have saved his life.
