I totaly get the fun to drive but since you are dooing a motor swap I whould have went with something in the 300hp and Tq range it whould have realy uped the fun factor. I realy like the car and have been watching for one of those or a 510 or the like. I am just saying....well go big or go home basicly.

Well, here's food for thought. Anything making over.. hmm say maybe 250 horsepower I'll have to spend even MORE money to replace the transmission and rear end to support that power, which to me seems like more time and money than I care to really spend to justify the end means.

Not to mention, as ben stated, there is a balance you have to keep in a car.. I'm going for the entire fun factor of the car. You drive the absolute piss out of it, you don't have to worry about blowing it up, beat the shit out of it at an event and drive it home with no worries, not even a sweat.

How about this, since you seem so skeptical.. I might be willing to let you either come for a ride or take it for a spin, possibly at an autocross or something, I'm sure you'd be suprised.

Not all of us care about quartermile times. We build cars for ourselves, not so other people are in awe of the horsepower dyno shit. These are the most fun cars to drive there is out there. Most people would never know.

Verse I am not saying he should build a drag car. I am totaly for the all around car I am planing spending alot of extra money in my build in order to make it do everything fairly well. And not be a gutted race car I have to trailer everywhere

Also as I said before I like the car, I also have built a few cars that are around this power to weight so I know what that is about. Now if this motor takes you to the breaking point of the rest of the drivetrain then I see this motors place more.

That's just how you were coming across. Sorry if my reply might have sounded rude. I'm just saying, most people say, "You should have put an "enter V8" in it." That's just b/c everyone around here cares about is drag cars and highway racing. We aren't those type of people. I'd rather have an 110HP Corolla than a 500HP Firebird.

Its going to be SUPER reliable because he's going to replace EVERYTHING on the car. Even is something goes wrong its not like it hasnt been replaced. Thats like saying if I restore a 69 camaro completely it will then be reliable, yeah because everything i build is brand new.

I like the project, its "neat", different and somewhat unique, but he's right. So much work for such little "power" in the end. Personally I'd rather invest the time in something else but to each their own, goodluck and keep us updated.

This is the most legible drunk post I've ever made. Seriously though, for some reason I thought this was a ground-up restoration therefore I figured everything was being gutted, fixed/replaced, and put back together.

Either way, its your car and your project do what makes you happy. I like it though... its neat.

I can completely respect this reply/rationale.

I don't think everyone has that opinion, just maybe the most vocal people on this board. Point made, though.

Good luck!

It will definately be fun to drive. I think the point that people were trying to make is simple. To most, a high-performance automobile should include a decent amount of hp/tq. To most, a high-performance car shouldn't be out-accelerated by a back-yard turbo crx ;) ect. But there are all kinds of performance.. and it won't be super slow, and it's over-all handling and agility will certaily make up for it hopefully.

Have fun and enjoy YOUR car!

Well, I made a little progess.. collected a couple parts along the way. I pretty much completely disassembled the entire motor checking just about everything. I din't find any problems with the motor itself, everything checked out fine.. cylinder walls, piston rings, main and rod bearings, head and etc all looked to be in the condition I expected of a ~20k mile engine. I'm just getting this thing completely cleaned up before I reassemble and drop it in my car because I'm anal about cleanliness. Also I have to make some provisions to head requiring me to dremel a passage in the head and blocking off the existing ports so that the water will properly flow since I'm converting the waterlines from FWD(in and out the back of the head) to RWD(in and out the front of the block). Here are some of the pictures I have of what's going on:

Something like this:

Looks pretty cool. how rare are those cars? I have never seen that body style before. Good luck, and continue to post up progress.

This body style was only manufactured from about 1979 to 1983, and just coming across one that's in decent condition is pretty difficult.. even so, finding what they consider a, "2-door sedan" like mine is even harder. I bought the car from Cali which was really my only chance of finding one without rust.

My car actually has the circular headlights and grill that we didn't get here in the states, however this is the actual version we did get:

  • 1 month later...

Well, It's been a while because of my time, or lack thereof. I have been dealing with a stupid company called EuroImports, whom claim they sold me 20v 4AGE ARP head studs, but they didn't fit my head at all.. after much bitching back and forth I finally sent them back and demanded a refund. This went on for a good month, so really I haven't had much accomplished other than cleaning all of my parts and reassembling the entire bottom end with fresh OE Toyota parts. I picked up new rings, gaskets, valveseals, etc for the motor and went ahead and painted the valvecovers. I'm pretty set on the gold/black color scheme.

Right now I'm actually at a fork in the road. I had hoped to get the car running before end of this year and the more I look at what I have infront of me, the less likely it's going to happen. The entire uncut TE72 dash/engine/chassis harness that I had lined up for this car was unfortunately lost by UPS, so now this has delayed me quite a bit since sourcing another will be a BITCH.

Giving up the idea of getting it running by end of this year, I figure I'll take it easy, make sure I do everything the way I want, without cutting corners. I figure if I won't be driving it, why not show it? I'm picking up 16x8 XXR 513's and bombing them completely semi-gloss black, as well as touching up all the window trim and painting the hood black as well. Also I plan on sourcing an RX7 oil cooler and mounting it externally on the front bumper just how the retro track cars would have in the same era. Basically I want to get the car in a presentable form so I can atleast show it at HIN the 31st.
