ImUrOBGYN
I think I know what's wrong with my car. Pictures of my head. No idea why it's become so corroded. Pretty unusual. If you're curious about the red fluid, it's just Toyota red coolant.) http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k58/ImUrOBGYN/Car/SupraHead1.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k58/ImUrOBGYN/Car/SupraHead2.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k58/ImUrOBGYN/Car/SupraHead3.jpg

Farkas
At any point did the car have green coolant in it? If you change from one to another, it's all bad news.
sgtschulze
I don't think that Toyota Red isn't Dexcool. Dexcool and regular a/f = bad news.

The car originally had green in it. I kept it that way for a long time, but have used Toyota red for a long time now along with distilled water. I've never directly mixed the two kinds of coolants and when it was switched, it was completely flushed. Or it at least seemed to be when I did it. Clifford Automotive
It will gunk up pretty fast after the swap if you didnt get it all out. And you will notice it pretty fast. I have found the best coolant to use in any application is Acuras Blue coolant. It keeps LS1 cars 20 degrees cooler.

It doesn't matter if you flush or not, the coolant gets absorbed into the cavities and in your gaskets and as soon as you switch it reacts instantly and becomes acidic.. as you can see. I always tell people to never switch, even if they say they're going to do a flush. Always stay with what the car originally had in it. Have you made any plans for the motor yet? Hopefully you can get the car back on the road again before snow, I know how it feels to be out of a fun car.
Kevin R.
Yupp, that was a bad idea on switching. But, good luck with the fix.
sgtschulze
I guess I'm confused....if you have Japanese Green (Silicate, Phosphate free etc...) and completely flush the system (roughly 10 gallons of distilled water) and then refill with another Japanese coolant (Honda Blue, Toyota Red) which are also silicate and phosphate free.....then how could they have a reaction? From my understanding the red coolant is supposed to be an extended life coolant that works better than green coolant, especially with newer cars that have a lot of aluminum parts. Both contain the same Silicate base, however the orange has a special organic acid corrosion inhibitor that breaks down the silicates from the green type, and reduces the corrosion protection by a significant amount. Basically you fuck shit up mixing the two *EDIT* Flushing a system out doesn't help much because the coolants still react with eachother since the existing coolant penetrates everything, including seals and gaskets. This leads to the, "Sludge" or corrosion buildup people find after switching.

At least a few other people may learn from this. Sometimes it takes seeing some nasty results for you to understand how serious something is. Should be back together in time for me to at least have a bit of fun. It's been WAAAYYYY too long. My car is my 'escape' and my head is about to explode. Cordell
I have never had issues flushing out Dexcool for the old green coolant. That being said I understand that you guys are talking about Toyota's own coolant, and did I read that right? You went from traditional to Toyota red? Very interesting. CRed05
Toyota red is regular green but a different color. Mixing it wont do anything but make it look brown. Now if you mix green with dex-cool it will turn into a brown jelly like sludge.
