I run AVG (free version) on all my systems. Avast I have heard is another good free product. Be VERY careful of any error message saying you have a virus. Unless it is coming from an antivirus program, then most likely it is a virus itself. More often than not they direct you to a website where you can pay to download a program to fix things.

yeah i did get something that popped up and said i had a virus and detected it and to click download. Its called personal AV (antivirus). but now that blocked screen keeps popping up and it gives me two options, to either continue unprotected or to download the antivirus or whatever. Im thinking when i clicked that it was some sort of virus. What do u think i should do?

The bad thing with the spyware that is on your pc is this: If you enter Safe Mode, no application will be allowed to load, with a DOS Box that pops up saying that the Program is to large to load into Memory.

AVG

Malwarebytes

SuperAntiSpyware

I run all three and have had zero issues. Prior, running Norton's or McAfee and ad aware I was hit numerous times.

Download the above, boot in safe mode, run the above and you should be fine.

If a website came up and scanned your HDD and said you have a virus it was just trying to sell you something or trick you into clicking on something to install a virus:-)

Usually if I suspect I have a malware infection I just restore from a few days ago and all is fine.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

http://malwarebytes.org/

Avast! Antivirus (I stopped using AVG. It's become a bloated pig who COULD NOT find everything and was overrun recently. I was unable to count on it and had been disappointed in it since updating/upgrading to the newest version.)

http://www.avast.com/

Spyware Blaster (I used to use Spybot Search and Destroy but found it misses many things, too. Not everything program is perfect, however, my current programs are better than my old ones at doing their jobs.)

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

These next two programs are not for everyone. However, you may want to look into them. They both have huge online followings/tech helpers on various, well-known forums.

Hijack This

ComboFix (which runs a version of HiJack This (among other things) when you run it.) I know the website Bleeping Computer uses combofix and offers support for those not so savvy.

All these are free or have free versions.
