Gillbot's car tire kicking thread

Ok, i've been under a rock lately because i've never heard of a Porsche Cayman and I never know that the 911 is a 2+2 seater.....

What's the lowdown on these cars?

Saw this 911, but the miles and age have me concerned:

http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?zip=44413&endYear=2014&sortBy=derivedpriceASC&showcaseOwnerId=0&startYear=1981&makeCode1=POR&sellerTypes=b&searchRadius=100&mmt=%5BPOR%5B%5D%5B%5D%5D&listingId=339202515&listingIndex=15&Log=0

And my Google-Fu says a Cayman is basically the gap car between the 911 and Boxster, while others claim it's simple a hardtop Boxster. I've never heard of it.

The Caymen IS a hardtop boxster.

I'd love either, but i'd keep looking. Before I bought my 335i I looked into a Caymen S, but at the time they (in combination with a decent winter car) were out of my price range.

Cayman is decent but it pisses me off that it was intentionally under-engineered. When it initially was put together, it completely out-performed the 911, so they trimmed everything back.

My dad considered the Cayman S when he was getting a new car, then drove an Evora and a BMW 1M. He woulda got the 1M but the dealer he was working with wanted $15k over sticker :lolguy: ended up with a manual 135i because he didn't want to spend $70k on a fat Lotus.

Never heard of it either.

I'll have to check when I talk to him, but I'm pretty sure my folks got the 135is. Can't remember if its the twin or single turbo straight six, but I think it's the twin turbo n54 motor.

Drive one, you'll be surprised. I was amazed at how strong the motor pulled in 6th gear from 55mph.

IMO it's the most fun I've had in a BMW since the E46 M3. Not that the E92 is a slouch, but the E36/46 were much wilder, less refined, and more fun than the new generation of M cars.

The 1M was the car that drew me to the 135i, because you're getting 8/10ths of the car for 5/10ths the price. People are buying 1M's as investment cars and trying to resell them for stupid money.

That looks like a base 996 carrera C2.... which you do not want to own... it would probably get waxed by a stock BRZ... even in a drag race...

Come on now, give the thing a little love. An '03 3.6L car was 320 hp, under 3100lbs and would run the quarter right around 13 flat.

Not saying a high mileage example that was base as base can be would get my money...but I'm just sayin'

It may have done that brand new, but with high miles and without knowing the owner's dedication to maintenance...
