Now that it's getting down to crunch time, I need to start logging some hours during the work week too.....Started doing some suspension work last night.....someone put red loctite on the strut bolts, and the whole time i thought it was just rust, until I finally got the bolt off....I was able to use the impact on one bolt, but the other two I had to do by hand...... that was fun...

Going from this:

....made some good progress this past weekend too, taking advantage of the good weather getting a good 5 hours of wrench time in on the car.......

Shot of my friend giving me a hand this past weekend......(gotta love free labor) He was a HUGE help working on easy shit, while I was under the hood....

Cylinder head comes back from the machine shop this week, and plans are to put it all back together this weekend, along with a shitload of other new parts (mainly maintenance items).

Doing a complete refresh of the cooling system, including new hoses for the entire system, along with getting the front end prepped for a radiator support (it was bent in a minor 'fender bender' by the PO)

Lots of stuff happening in the next couple weeks, so stay tuned!

Nice work! I look forward to seeing it out this season. I'm sure you two will be a force to be reckoned with.

Thanks Joe, that's certainly the plan ;)

Couple more deliveries today, and it seems as though the stars are aligning this week for the cylinder head to go back on this weekend. Will have it back from the machine shop by the end of the week, along with the rest of the parts needed for putting the motor back together.......

I guess the benefit of saving money by buying some used parts is having a little leftover for some new tools.....and these consumables sure add up quickly too, sheesh......

90A Poly Rear Trailing arm bushings and 95A Front Control Arm Bushings, and some boring maintenance parts....

Since this is a 'budget' build, I have been trying to get creative with parts I need for the car. I have been buying 'used' when I can too.....

So I 'inherited' a yellow Corbeau Forza seat and decided I couldn't stand the Yellow......so I tried my hand at some Dupli-Color Vinyl and Fabric Spray Paint :) I taped off the Vinyl on the bolsters and here was the results....

http://www.jdmgallery.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Dupli-Color.jpg

Before:

First coat:

Second coat: (took this picture this morning)

Seat is a little 'crunchy' from the paint, but I'm pleased so far. For $5/can I'm pretty happy. For the amount of time that someone will actually have their butt in the seat, this just saved me about $300 :D

More money for the build!

Sent my injectors out last week to get ultrasonic cleaning, flow tested, and balanced. They were actually in pretty damn good shape for being the original injectors (I'm assuming)

Highest increase was about 10%....that's good for a tenth or two, isn't it? :D

All came back sealed in a larger bag and then individual for each one. I would recommend these guys, they were nice to deal with.

Ok, it's update time!!

Had a very productive weekend. Was in the garage from about 8p-1am Saturday night, and then had a marathon on Sunday from 10-7...made some great progress. Prepare thyself from the many pictures.....

Started with replacing all the coolant hoses and most of the hose clamps on the car, along with new knock sensors, making sure all hoses and vacuum lines are routed correctly, and finally cleaning the mating surface of the block prior to cylinder head re-installation

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/02882535-6B22-40BE-920D-4CE879557AEB_zpsrdhzgu2b.jpg

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/9BD9A24C-58EC-416F-B481-F69275F39AA5_zpsjbhs8ghn.jpg

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/831D64A8-7D09-4420-9FC2-9E6E9AA92A3F_zpstnrwle3i.jpg

After putting in a new check valve and re-installing the dowels into the block, we were ready for the head to get back on the car

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo2_zpsfe94c92b.jpg

I got to 'Christen' my new parts washer after a trip to the local Get Go for 3 gallons of Kerosene and we were off and running (parts washer worked great, btw! $40 from Harbor Freight)

All head bolt washers were re-used, so I had to pull them off all the old head bolts and wash them.

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/B2710F32-536B-4984-823A-1636B0008597_zpsrwmoiyef.jpg

Cylinder head bolts are a 3 stage torquing process.

Stage 1 - 22 ft lbs.

Stage 2 - +90 deg

Stage 3 - +90 deg

Due to the cold temps, we had to wait 75 minutes in between each tightening....

Adam getting his hands dirty

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo2_zps266b89c5.jpg

If anyone has a chance to use one of these beautiful torque wrenches, please do so. Beeps and vibrates when you get to 90 deg....and you can ratchet it back and it will pick up where it left off if you don't do the the full 90 deg.....AWESOME tool!

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo1_zpseac2d9cd.jpg

22 ft. lbs done....so NOW what do we do :p

Liberal dab of assembly lube, and then we go to work on some other projects.....

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo1_zps0064d748.jpg

We sorted out the plumbing for the oil distribution block, routed, and install the block with all the proper attachments to retain the OEM Oil Pressure 'Dummy' light, as well as the Oil Pressure and Temp gauges that will live inside the car.

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo1_zps64949cb1.jpg

More projects in between wait times were rebuilding my Vanos (for those who are unfamiliar with E36, the Vanos is similar to VTec in a Honda) and re installing prior to Valve Cover going back on. It was thoroughly cleaned, and new seals and an 'anti-rattle ring' was installed to refresh the unit.

While waiting I also took this opportunity to clean ALL the parts that were being re-used in the head.....

Cams, bearing caps, nuts, and hydraulic lifters were prepped in the trays with more assembly lube....

Once the 3 stage torquing was done, we were on to re-installing all of our freshly cleaned parts :)

Cam trays with lifters in!

Cams on!

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo2_zps8dcc2683.jpg

Caps are next......followed by locking the cams back into TDC for Vanos install

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo3_zps90343fb2.jpg

Vanos installed! (it's down in front, for those looking for it)

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo4_zps15c8ee5c.jpg

Lastly, the timing is check with a blast of air through the Vanos to make sure it advances....we got about 10mm of movement, which was just fine.

http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae245/bmwohio/E36%20STX%20build/photo2_zps9357ad20.jpg

Lastly, a few shots of the workspace....nothing great, but it gets the job done.....much more to come in the weeks ahead.

I hope everyone is enjoying the thread.

Logged a late night last night. Put the little guy to bed around 8:30, and then was out in the garage until about 1 am.

-Started working on rear trailing arms bushings and got one side out (need to move some tires to get to the other side)

-Vanos access bolts and new lower chain tensioner with crush washers installed

-washed a BUNCH of hardware that was caked with grime from the intake manifold, valve cover, and some other bits and pieces

-finally got the passenger side wheel off and got the caliper, brake line, and front strut assembly off the car.

My plan is to keep logging hours during the week after my little guy goes to bed to really get some things done. It's kind of therapeutic being out in the garage for long periods of time late at night........

More to come this week.

Rear trailing arm bushings coming out:

Clean hardware! (such a tedious job, but I'm glad I take the time to do it when I go to put things back together)
