If I wanted a top notch shooter in 5.56, I'd get this upper:

One of their lower parts kits:

With whichever Geissele trigger, stock, grip and trigger guard fits my needs. Also, whatever billet lower looks the best (I'm a fan of Umbrella, if you can find one). I'd then spend the remaining $1,500 on glass and rings.

But it seems like all you really want is name recognition, in which case a LOLrue, HK, Barrett, Knight's Armament, Wilson Combat, or POF is what you are looking for, even though they won't out shoot that White Oak.

I weighed my options I'm going to go with the HK. I decided to go with the HK because of the number of parts that they make in-house I like that about rifle company. I know it's not as flashy is the billet Larue but I can't get over the fact that I'm in HK collector. Think I will be really happy with the purchase. I jumped on this gun because of the extended rail. That is a $500 feature and is impossible to come by.v I was about to buy the Larue until I started reading about the HK. I learned that the HK has a lot more than meets the eye in terms of innovations and features. You don't see them when you look at it at first glance. Once I read up on it I was sold.

I would have picked the h&k too. They are similar in price and no matter how fancy the LaRue is, it is still your basic direct impingement ar15. The HK416 on the other hand, it a totally different beast.

BTW, I thought you were getting a m16? Is that still on the table?

Yeah, The things that put me over the edge.

1. The research I did on the piston system (so little heat transfer to bolt). They said it extends the parts-life 3-4x. And, requires barely any lubrication.

2. The receivers are thicker than milspec and flared more at the magwell, and the magwell is cut differently.

3. Almost (or maybe all) of the gun is made inhouse.

4. The bore reduces in diameter (tapered) as it reaches the muzzle and (supposedly) increases velocity. I have seen some reviews where it did, and some where it didn't. Depending on ammo used.

5. tungsten buffer and spring.

Damn!!! Magic HK barrels will increase the velocity of the bullets!!!!! Are you sure you don't mean there is less loss in velocity compared to a M4 profile barrel?

I thought about a SCAR. It's just not the right gun for me now as I am trying to upgrade my ar15. I think a 556 SCAR is cool, but just not for me.

Although,hmmm... 308 SCAR.... I have been pondering selling my ar10... (this):

I like HK also, I'd love to try a G36.

So, currently... if you want a g36 you will have to pay 3500-4500 for a converted SL8.

In about 1-2 years you can buy a civilian g36 from the factory for 2,000 (these are rumors).

I'm going to wait. I want one too.
