Anyone who questions whether that should have been called is an idiot. I am looking at you Marvin Lewis.

Now, I will not argue that the Shazier hit should have been called a personal foul, it should have been. That being said, there is no comparison between the 2.

Lewis needs canned. Soft coverage and no pressure on an already injured QB that can barely throw? One good hit and he's out, send the house, and make him prove he can throw. Nope let him dink, dunk, and check down half a dozen times till the moronic duo can hand them 30 yards.

Bernard was a runner and Shazier wrapped up. That would very rarely ever be called. If he had launched with his arms to his side, they would call that

that doesn't matter whether Bernard was a runner yet or no (he was though, for sure). Shazier led with the crown of his helmet. Regardless of where he hit Bernard (it was on Bernard's helmet, for the record), it should have been

1) a penalty

2) not a turnover in Pittsburgh's favor

It absolutely does matter that he was a runner. The fact that he wrapped up means the refs are going to determine it to be incidental and not spearing. The rule explicitly excludes incidental during an actual tackle of a runner.

Its an unsafe tackle yes, but the refs will never call that.

the rule is

ARTICLE 8. INITIATING CONTACT WITH THE CROWN OF THE HELMET. It is a foul if a runner or tackler initiates forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top/crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside the tackle box (an area extending from tackle to tackle and from three yards beyond the line of scrimmage to the offensive team’s end line). Incidental contact by the helmet of a runner or tackler against an opponent shall not be a foul.

bolded relevant portion of the Shazier hit.

So no, in this instance, it does NOT matter since it clearly wasn't incidental/consequential

With Shazier wrapping up and Bernard ducking his head, they have always sided with "incidental" in that situation.
