Otis Nice
I've wanted to start handcrafting and designing a few things after filming the show last year. Thanks to Steve for donating a couple of knife kits I was able to get rolling. I don't have before pics of this one, but here's what I did for him. My first ever attempts. I didn't make these blades. They were kits he had. I merely formed the handles from scratch with no tutelage or experience, polished, and sharpened them. The material is Dymondwood on these two. He said he wanted "one more rough and rugged" and the other "something different". The Red "more rough" one was literally whittled into existence. The blue "something different" was an experiment and learning opportunity. http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8506 http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8513 http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8514 After completing them a pipe maker I follow called Moonshine Pipes did a contest for our wounded vets and offered to let others join in if they wanted to offer something forth so I ordered supplies and got to work. I am getting ready to send them to my sheath guy then off to two of our amazing warriors who both sacrificed in battle. I hope they like them. Both of these identical blades have curly cherry scales. http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8509 http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8510 http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8511 http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8512

Otis Nice
Best start collecting old leaf springs and lawnmower blades. Great knife making material. I've studied a few makers that use those, saw blades, and anything else they can find. I'm hoping to be forging my own blades successfully within 3-5 years. xlr8tn
any knowledge on the damascus steel knives on ebay? I always buy my buddy's dad something every year for letting me keep my camper on his property all summer and stay out there. This year it was hand made cocobolo turkey and deer calls. I was kinda looking at those damascus knives on ebay for next year but not sure what kinda quality the blades are. Price out a damascus blade kit and how much you'd charge me to do a handle and maybe I can throw some money your way next spring when I buy him his yearly gift. edit: The blade would preferably be like a skinning knife or something like that and I'm a big fan of bocote wood. Just a beautiful wood.

Just a beautiful wood. If it's cheap, it's not real Damascus. That blade I did above is for a VERY close friend of mine, and I basically did the work for free along with having to redo the handle since the first one I did wasn't up to my standards (I lost money essentially after that) and it still cost him a decent amount. BUT, it's real Damascus and will last a lifetime. And I agree, bocote is awesome. PM me if interested and we'll talk. Anything hand made obviously varies depending on what materials and time is involved, but since I'm just starting out I keep things as affordable as possible. That's bada$$, Randy! Keep up the good work... A+ Randy! Nice work! Thanks Clay, Bob, and Joe. I appreciate it fellas. We should buy a knife off of you and do a giveaway. And you can also include a flier In the box. let me know! Didn't we talk about that via text? Gimme a few weeks to catch up on orders and I'll make a nice knife/pipe combo hopefully. A gentleman's set if you will.
Otis Nice
Here's one I am working on currently. Inspired by Thor's hammer for a huge comic book fan. http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8574 Here's a set I did for an auction by an Instagram pipe page called "BadassBriars". The FDA imposed new laws on Aug 8th and implemented a bunch of BS on pipes, tobacco, ecigs, and cigars. Long story short this guy took it upon himself to get a bunch of people involved before that happened to donate their talents, time, and efforts. He posted on his well followed page an auction every day for a full week leading up to the date of the new, strict regulations. Each maker got to auction off pieces and donate to the charity of their choice. I did a knife, pipe, and tamper, to raise funds and awareness for Crohn's and Colitis as these diseases has/does affect many of my fam members. The knife is a 440c steel blade I outsourced. Handle is cherry with a custom purple die. Purple is the color designated to raise awareness for Crohn's and Colitis. The tamper is 100% hand carved cherry using the same custom mixed dye and a .38 special casing. The pipe is 100% hand whittled, carved, polished, and dyed briar, using the same custom dye. The stem is acrylic. I mixed the dye myself and dumped the rest so there would never be another with this exact mixture. The customer, in Ontario, received the set today and has already messaged me telling me how well the pipe smoked. http://www.columbusracing.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=971&pictureid=8573 Edited August 12, 2016 by Otis Nice

NWill
Awesome work. Depending what material you choose I can cut some blanks for you. I have plenty of knife sized scraps of mild steel if you want some just to practice on. Edit: looks like the heat affected zone (HAZ) from the plasma would need ground off as it gets hardened. It could possibly be annealed but I would have to look into it.

xlr8tn
I have your number....I'll text you some links as I find stuff to get your input. I pretty much know what I want. Just a matter of sitting down and doing it. I like that bocote wood but want to look at some other woods too. Something like that on a Damascus blade. Should be a good looking knife.
