Disclaimer
That isn't the correct answer. It was Suzuki in 1942.I just can't find that little fact anywhere. My issue with 16, was I used Soichiro's actual bio on wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soichiro_Honda) which incorrectly states 1946 - apparently 1948 is the year everywhere else. Also, Honda was sufficiently aware of his own managerial shortcomings. Honda Motor Co. Ltd. was established in October 1946, initially to build small capacity motorcycles to get Japanese workers mobile.

It wasn't what we know today as ATVs, but it gave credit to Suzuki for it's invention. It was essentially a 600cc single 4wd 2-seater car with no body, like a mini dune buggy-ish/motorcycle type thing. Suzuki started as a company making weaving looms for silk and cotton. He created the atv to make the fields easier to access.

Casper
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_invented_the_ATVThe Japanese invented the ATV because of the bad winter thaw to get from town to crops. Then Americans got a hold of it in the 1970's and promoted it for recreational use, which is still its primary use. However farmers and hunters find good uses for it to, like to get where regular trucks (even 4 wheel drives) cannot. But it doesn't say when the Japanese invented it. I'll keep looking. So was the 1942 model a limited production military vehicle not for public consumption?
Casper
ATV BeginningsIn the mid-twentieth century, the Japanese created early ATVs to aid farmers. Japanese farmers used three-wheeled vehicles to pass over rough, hilly and muddy terrain to enable them to take goods into town.http://www.ehow.com/facts_4882506_who-invented-atv.htmlNot a specific year either.... Disclaimer
For the rest of ya'll... all these questions were from a mis-mash of quizzes from funtrivia.com.Here's a quiz with the question about the ATVs: www.funtrivia.com/playquiz/quiz188796159e728.htmlI just want to verify the answers, which sucks because that funtrivia site is blocked by the Websense proxy, so I had no other choice than to verify answers to old fashioned way. The project began in 1937, and within two years Suzuki had completed several compact prototype cars. These first Suzuki motor vehicles were powered by a then-innovative, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, four-cylinder engine. It featured a cast aluminum crankcase and gearbox and generated 13 horsepower (9.7 kW) from a displacement of less than 800cc.
Disclaimer
This says Honda was credited for the first commercial ATV in 1970, after 3 years of planning. But, I dunno if that's First ATV in the US... they made it for the US market.http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1792854 This is perturbing.
