Best place I can find... Expandable baton ?

I am not comfortable with the idea of having a handgun, nor is it allowed at my work. (special security clearance) but, I do have an expandable baton, ASP, the same kind most cops have. I've tried to read the ohio laws online, but it was difficult to get a clear understanding. My question is, is it legal to carry this baton on the bike, or in my tail bag? If you can't answer, anybody know of where or who could?

No, you cannot carry an expandable baton in Ohio. The law is as follows:

2923.12 Carrying concealed weapons.

(A) No person shall knowingly carry or have, concealed on the person’s person or concealed ready at hand, any of the following:

(1) A deadly weapon other than a handgun;

2923.11 Weapons control definitions.

As used in sections 2923.11 to 2923.24 of the Revised Code:

(A) “Deadly weapon” means any instrument, device, or thing capable of inflicting death, and designed or specially adapted for use as a weapon, or possessed, carried, or used as a weapon.

In this case, a baton would be classified as a deadly weapon meaning that you could not carry it on you.

So say I have a metal fork in my tank bag that not legal? I could use it to kill someone right? They word it so it can be used as a blanket to cover anything they feel could be used as a weapon. Bunch of crap if you ask me. Whats next? I will need a permit to carry a pocket knife!

Use a Bic ink pen to the chest or rib cage. That's a weapon and your allowed to carry it.

Get something the size of a two or three D cell MagLight. It's a baton. It works.

No one will question your having a big honking heavy MagLight.

You can even get a rack type mount for a MagLight to mount it somewhere.

edit: at one time I could find in Columbus code the limits on knives. I no longer can find it. It was something like 3.5 inch blade max. Bowie knives, of course, have special mention as deadly weapons in most city law. As far as I can remember, ASPs, numchucks, bullwhips, throwing stars, etc, are all considered weapons and at least subject to confiscation.

Hitting someone in the head with a club is such a serious offense, that I remember attackers getting life sentences for attempted murder.

Now keep in mind that even if you get a CHL in Ohio, you still cannot carry the baton. It is issued as a License to Carry a Conealed HANDGUN. I think some states do issue a License to Carry a Conealed WEAPON and allow other items besides a handgun.
