  1. Well it was that time again to take the Wife on a multiple day ride with camping and small town shopping on the menu. I needed to visit my old Boss from my days in Virginia who retired in the Fredericksburg, VA. area and we also wanted to stay at the Big Lyn Lodge in Little Switzerland, NC. I wanted to return to my 80-90’s version of sport touring on the Z1K with Tank Bag and Tail Pack with sleeping bag on top. I loaded the tent and camping crap on the Wife’s Spyder to keep things even. Day one we road 33 out of Ohio to Elkins, WV. and continued into the area of Harrisonburg, VA. We then jumped on 211E an old favorite on mine by late afternoon. We were going to camp in Luray, VA. where we use to back in our Virginia days but I talked her into a Hotel in New Market since we were running behind scheduled and so we could be fresh the next day when visiting friends. Day two started with a great breakfast in Luray we pushed on to an area just west of Fredericksburg. We spent the day visiting so by the time we got back on the road heading SW to pick up the BRP it was too late to camp so we hit a Holliday Inn with a Bar/Restaurant in Staunton, VA. All backroads in the foothills provider great riding but at a pace well below what I consider sport touring. Wife’s speed parameters are as listed: Interstate/Divided HW- 10 over, No higher than 75. All others: at or 5 over. Curves 10 below posted recommended. Day three was a southbound on the BRP day. With the day time high temps the upper elevation was a blessing topped off with the standard BRP views. My wife loved the parkway pace and low weekday traffic. I on the other hand came up with a fun event I call. “Hitting the Chicane” Once I checked the overlook turn off asphalt surface conditions I started hitting them at speed as one should when they are empty of cars and people. We got off the BRP at Meadows of Dan and proceeded to Willville M/C Campground. The Wife checked the restroom/shower facilities and gave it thumbs down. So it was back north on the BRP a few miles to Tuggles Gap Restr/motel that was full. They recommended Hotel Floyd just down the road a piece in Floyd, VA. Great place, Neat town with a lot of (Earthy’s) ?? Clean Hotel with a Blue Grass Band playing in the hotel court yard. Great restaurant across the street called the Dogtown Roadhouse with a huge stage for live bands. It was Thursday night so we enjoyed the BG Band at the hotel. A great little town to stay in on motorcycle road trips. Day four started on a fun road 221 out of Floyd to 211S into NC and up the mountain to Little Switzerland, NC. We hit the Diamondback route and finished at the Big Lyn Lodge in Little Switzerland for the evening. A fantastic Dinner and breakfast included with the room and beautiful views of the Blue Ridge. Day five started with a forecast of rain and thunderstorm in the NC./TN area we were heading so we decided to head home on back roads with an overnight at the Old Clark Inn in Marlinton,Wva. This put us on WVa. 219 one of my favorite roads for riding with the Wife on day six returning home with just under 1500 miles. Mission Accomplished: The Z1K did just fine in the sport touring mode with the little few little modifications. Wife was happy but could have used a few more walks thru towns window shopping with me and less riding each day. No video’s just a few pic’s. The End. B.

  2. Not much update recently, but after seeing the picture Doc took today, I figured I would show a comparison. It's crazy how much better I feel in the bike since losing weight and adding muscle.

  4. A deal too good to pass up has come my way and sadly I don't have room for more than 2 bikes so... My beloved project/track bike is being put up for sale. I picked it up from this forum 2 years ago and it's seen 4 track days at Mid-O with me as the pilot. I'm not in a super-duper hurry to sell... looking for $2,000. Bike runs well, but it may need its valves adjusted. Has a 996 front end, sprung stock with 7.5wt oil. Stock rear shock Bike is stripped down of all non-essential electronics Fuel injected Have title, clean Rear tire is new (Pilot Power 3) Front tire has maybe 2 or 3 more track days worth of life (take-off from my street bike) Fairings repaired and repainted over the winter, sharkskinz fiberglass Woodcraft rearsets OR sticker on swingarm (essential) Somewhere between 70 and 80 horsepower, she had some engine work done (higher compression) back in her WERA days, no bore kit or anything to my knowledge Fair warning, if you're looking for a pristine bike with no blemishes or beauty marks, this is not the one for you. There are a few other members on here that can attest to the fact that the bike runs and is pretty quick for an older girl. Anyhow, pictures:

  6. LOL! Sorry to hear you had the usual baptism of oil when doing your first oil change. It takes a bit of technique/experience to avoid a mini Exxon Valdez episode. Now that you've done it once the next time will be much less messy. The 3rd generation 690 engine does away with the oil in the frame concept. Even the filters are easier to get at. Hope you have a enjoyable trip to Vintage. I plan on being there Saturday and may ride up Friday if I can get away from work at noon. Hopefully will cya there.

  8. Air is an insulator. Its why you have at least double pane windows Everything is an insulator. A sheet of Renolyds aluminum foil is an insulator. A vacuum is a better insulator than air. Mobil One is an insulator too.

  9. Rode it for 500 miles in 9hrs. Hit 83-377-555-676-26-260-800-148-9-164. Good day. Next order of business is to put Q3s back on and prep for Mid-O next Monday or Tuesday. Can't wait to try out this track thing.

  15. Do you have a sleeping bag under you? f so that's why you don't get cold. I f your laying directly on the air mattress it will make you cold on a cold night. I'm speaking from experience here. A good pad will insulate better but a air matteress is more comfortable. I use a air matress but make sure i have a sleeping bag or bedding that insulates my back.

  18. It's nice to get out every now and then by myself. Stop when I want to stop, dick around when I want to, see something cool and bust a u turn to click a pic. All without worrying what the group or other person thinks or wants todo.

  22. It had a lot of quirks to it for sure, I wouldn't call it garbage though. When Suzuki recalled the ECU on them for it's map they took a lot out of that engine. Mine never had the recall done so it was still the unrestricted version, a blast at WOT but unpredictable in the mid range. Not a every day rider but id like to have another.

  24. Ive never ridden one but id assume it has a very low center of gravity so it probably feels a little lighter than it is.

  25. XL883L 563 wet GS1200A 564 wet Fjr1300 650 wet and just because I already know C14 670wet These are the numbers my Google Fu comes up with, these are all as the come from the factory weights. Obviously the FJR and C14 come with bags the other two do not.
