  1. Duty boots are waterproof, and sturdy enough to stop a twisted ankle or more. They won't have pucks on sides for contact with the road. Haven't tried walking in bike boots, but duty boots are normal walking. They cost a lot less. I did try to break my ankle wearing them, and it didn't happen. Twisted and xray only. Twisted hard and fast enough to get an abrasion burn inside the boot, but not from anything outside. Second pair, mine last about two years each pair. Daily wear. Usually prefer anti-slip Wolverines in the Winter. When I say duty boots I mean police and EMT wear. Not combat boots, but I've used those too. I'm happy being able to get on and off the bike and be comfortable both ways.
  2. Most duty boot wearers think the Bates wears out too fast. I went with Converse zipper duty boots. Wear them all Summer, and they've been through torrential downpours and stayed dry. I can't stop rain water running down my leg into the boot though. But it takes a while to do that.
  3. I ran a win98 machine till recently. And had no problems with video. Yes I geeked that win98 up to an SP4 level, which isn't widely available. I gave it up when web coding left it behind. Stuff just wouldn't display correctly. It wasn't that bad, there aren't many attacks on win98. And the few that are out there, are easily handled. edit: If booted in diagnostics mode or safe mode, the videos might play ok. Which means applications and services that are running are overpowering the system resources. In English, if the system overruns the available RAM, it starts swapping data on and off the hard drive to compensate. That will seriously degrade performance. Your machine is old enough that some one should be able to just give you some old RAM for free.
  4. Not really related, but probably true. Literacy has never been all that good. Even these percentages of illiteracy are probably an improvement over the past. It's sort of like looking at the total number of horse buggies or horses. The total number is higher now than ever before. We just don't see it. So the total number of literate or moral families is probably higher now than ever before. We just see the opposite higher amounts. All factors of an increasing world population. And we don't even see that now, since the USA is close to a stable population. edit: I can add that it would be nice if colleges taught a basic Reality 101, and explained the Earth revolves around the Sun, the Sun is a star, and the Earth is not flat... Things like that. (Yes, I know it's part of grade school and high school education, but apparently students aren't listening.)
  5. Low rpm stumble. For an off idle stumble, I'd clean the carb, or injectors, or check fuel flow in general at idle. Check for a vacuum leak. It just won't show in the other gears, at the higher rpm that it shifts at. Bad spark is usually a high rpm stumble. But either way, checking fuel and spark is a reasonable first move, and a lot easier and cheaper. And a single bad spark plug wire or plug could indeed cause it. air/fuel/spark is kinda touchy at low rpms
  6. One reason why? 14% of U.S. adults can't read 21% of U.S. adults read below a 5th grade level 63% of U.S. prison inmates can't read 19% of U.S. high school graduates can't read
  7. If you're using windows media player, it's known for the hurky-jerky. Try Media Player Classic 321 or the VLC Media Player
  8. I've hit two trees and one telephone pole on skis, so I'm probably qualified to say something, but.... I'm too stunned that we're discussing counter steering again. But quite happy that also means Winter is almost over and we get to ride again. It does occur to me that skis go where you point them. Which isn't quite the same as the gyroscopic articulation of a linked frame with two wheels. Skiing is more about directing the center of gravity of your body, which is centered at your hip joints. The part that is similar to counter steering, is that the body of weight in skiing is linked at a joint at the hips. One part might twist one direction, and the other part twist another. Still a matter of balance around a center of gravity of the mass. Same for a four wheeler, if you've ever enjoyed a 4 wheel drift. And yes, airplanes do it too. The balance, not the linked joints. Although that would be cool, an articulated airplane with advanced maneuverability. (Ok, it just occurred to me that Burt Rutan's space plane does exactly that, it has a pivot hinge for enhanced flight.)
  9. How did anyone get the idea that the V twin design, or use, or on a motorcycle is an idea that Harley Davidson owns or was first to use. Not even close. V-twins were originated in Germany and France. First use on motorcycles were Curtis in America and NSU in Germany and Griffin in France. In between, any hardware or catalog would sell you a V-twin motor that fits in the V shape of your bicycle frame. A DIY kit. The use on bicycles is what made the market place grow.
  10. If people haven't noticed yet, Vances announced they will build a 24 lane shooting range in Obetz.
  11. I saw this just before leaving work. It's a pretty major decision for individual rights.
  12. I know the feeling. I waited almost a year to see one upper and/or barrel come back into production. And still isn't exactly what I wanted. It does look like varmit style and HBAR and stainless and fluted aren't produced much and there is a big demand for the ones in price competitive ranges. Try not to buy two just to get one. Then you want to build two.
  13. Yeah, I'm a bit crazy.... I'd want the 24" barrel for 239. But there isn't really a gain of 24" over 20". If I botched any of the links, I can find it again. 600-700 for a fancy upper seems ok. Likewise 250-300 for a great barrel. Some of these are Wylde Chamber. (That hbar Anderson barrel for 139 seems reasonable also.) 20" barrels 275 http://www.fulton-armory.com/barrelfa16m4gicontourcm1x9threadedchromelined-1.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 289 http://www.fulton-armory.com/barrelkrieger20hbarss1x77720threaded-1.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 20" hbar barrels 139 http://www.andersonrifles.net/index.php/shop-parts/upper-parts/barrel/20-hbar-barrel-1-9-twist-252.html#arpartsfinder.com 240 http://www.fulton-armory.com/barrelfa20hbarcm1x9thelookplainmuzzle.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 285 http://www.fulton-armory.com/barrelkrieger20hbarss1x77720threaded-1.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 435 http://www.americanspiritarms.com/chrome-moly-barrels/20-inch-ported-and-fluted-barrel/#arpartsfinder.com 485 http://www.pkfirearms.com/Noveske_Barrel_Groups/61/c#arpf3119#arpartsfinder.com 20" stainless steel barrels 315 http://www.surplusammo.com/blackhole-weaponry-ar-15-20-rifle-length-stainless-steel-5-56-1-8-poly-barrel/#arpartsfinder.com 20" fluted barrels 375 http://www.americanspiritarms.com/chrome-moly-barrels/20-inch-ported-and-fluted-barrel/#arpartsfinder.com 24" barrels 239 http://www.andersonrifles.net/index.php/shop-parts/upper-parts/barrel/24-416r-stainess-steel-fluted-barrel-5-56-223.html#arpartsfinder.com 20" uppers 421 http://hamlundtactical.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=92_102_281&products_id=3314#arpartsfinder.com 520 http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Rock_River_Arms_20_Standard_A4_Upper_Half_Flat_To_p/rra-ar0450b.htm#arpartsfinder.com 840 http://www.pkfirearms.com/Noveske_Barreled_Custom_Uppers/83/c#arpf3121#arpartsfinder.com 979 http://www.pkfirearms.com/Noveske_Barreled_Custom_Uppers/83/c#arpf3120#arpartsfinder.com 20" hbar uppers 415 http://www.jsesurplus.com/JSE20HBarNitride1x91RGB.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 415 http://www.jsesurplus.com/JSE20HBarNitride1x9RHGB.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 500 http://www.cheaperthandirt.com//product/ARR-633#arpartsfinder.com 500 http://www.brownells.com//rifle-parts/receiver-amp-action-parts/receivers/upper-receivers/20-a4-22lr-upper-receiver-prod44121.aspx?ttver=1&psize=96&avad=avant&aid=112619&cm_mmc=affiliate-_-Itwine-_-Avantlink-_-Custom+Link 513 http://www.pkfirearms.com/RRA_Uppers/206/c#arpf934#arpartsfinder.com 570 http://www.andersonrifles.net/index.php/shop-parts/upper-parts/barrel/anderson-20-no-flash-hider-upper.html#arpartsfinder.com 621 http://grabagun.com/firearms/ar/uppers/bushmaster-upper-predator-223-20-flt.html#arpartsfinder.com 630 http://grabagun.com/firearms/ar/uppers/bushmaster-firearms-inter-92820-flttop-rec-var-5-56uppr.html#arpartsfinder.com 660 http://www.pkfirearms.com/RRA_Custom_Uppers/208/c#arpf3214#arpartsfinder.com 725 http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Rock_River_Arms_20_Coyote_Complete_Upper_AR0585_p/rra-ar0585.htm#arpartsfinder.com 779 http://www.pkfirearms.com/RRA_Custom_Uppers/208/c#arpf3213#arpartsfinder.com 20" stainless uppers 650 http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Rock_River_Arms_Predator_Pursuit_20_inch_AR0565_p/rra-ar0565.htm#arpartsfinder.com 695 http://www.pkfirearms.com/RRA_Stainless_Uppers/204/c#arpf825#arpartsfinder.com 707 http://www.pkfirearms.com/RRA_Uppers/206/c#arpf871#arpartsfinder.com 20" fluted uppers 525 http://mapartsinc.com/shop/details.asp?id=1493&iCat=19&iSubOne=342#arpartsfinder.com 647 http://grabagun.com/firearms/ar/uppers/windham-weaponry-20-prcsn-416r-ss-flutedcmpltupper.html#arpartsfinder.com 723 http://www.cheaperthandirt.com//product/84214#arpartsfinder.com 743 http://www.cheaperthandirt.com//product/8-WW-UR20FSSFTVB#arpartsfinder.com 24" upper 495 http://mapartsinc.com/shop/details.asp?id=167&iCat=19&iSubOne=342#arpartsfinder.com 500 http://www.jsesurplus.com/Custom24SSBULL5.561x81RailGasBlockRifleFloat.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 540 http://www.jsesurplus.com/JSE24WilsonArms1x8223WyldeRifleGasSystemBullBarrelUpperYMFlo.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 595 http://www.jsesurplus.com/dpms24a3flattopbullbarrelassembly1x9dpms141-1.aspx#arpartsfinder.com 600 http://www.cheaperthandirt.com//product/ARR-653#arpartsfinder.com 644 http://grabagun.com/firearms/ar/uppers/cmmg-upper-vrmnt-556nato-24-ss-fltd.html#arpartsfinder.com 670 http://hamlundtactical.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=92_102_277& products_id=3387#arpartsfinder.com 697 http://www.cheaperthandirt.com//product/2-CMMG55BE3A3#arpartsfinder.com 705 http://www.pkfirearms.com/RRA_Stainless_Uppers/204/c#arpf2208#arpartsfinder.com 720 http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Rock_River_Arms_24_Varmint_A4_Phosphate_BCG_1_8_p/rra-ar0575.htm#arpartsfinder.com
  14. That might change if we go to embedded chip style cards like the rest of the world uses. I think the change over is due in Oct 2014.

  16. Fed gov thinks everyone should have one. http://www.ready.gov/business http://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit Everyone should have 20-30 days worth of canned goods in the pantry. I had one Winter with about 10 days without power, and one Summer hurricane in Ohio that knocked out power for quite a while. It was dark and/or cold, but I wasn't hungry. Not really possible to buy food if the grocery is without power and closed. A friend of mine gave his parents gas masks. They were confused why they would need them. They live in between a freeway and two railroad lines. In short order there were two toxic chemical spills that forced them to evacuate. They called up to get lessons on how to use the gas masks... edit: If total anarchy evolved, a 22LR would get you a cup of soup. Or a rabbit, that would be worth a week of soup. I figure I got at least 10 years worth of... soup... edit: and yes Chevy, homestead "hunker down" is more practical and more likely. It happens often enough in storms. People in Florida know this. A hurricane will even result in organized patrols of the neighborhood to protect people and property. There will be no outside help, protection, food, or water brought in, for quite a long time. You're on your own.
  17. Did you see the 400hp Yamaha 4-cylinder on that website? Snowmobile setup, but still a motorcycle engine.
  18. Found the plastic back plate that goes in a MARPAT assault bag. Don't see them often, and my bag didn't have one. Found woodland gear to replace the ACU. Bag weighs 23 pounds without water and is packed at random till it was full. The shovel is heavy, but there should be one. SOG FastHawk for chopping. Not very big, but will work. A camping saw blade, the Japanese style that cuts on the pull. Most machetes are stupid. Mine is a cheap Chinese blade that balances well. Small tent, small tarp, sleeping bag, and mat are all extra weight. A deck of cards. I tried the solar powered charging unit, and it works very nice. Can charge phone and tablet. Tablet and phone both have GPS navigation apps and a load of topo maps. Still like paper maps better with a mil-spec compass. I have a lot of "add water" food. The stuff is light. I wound up with four stoves. One unleaded/kerosene/white gas rig, one that runs on a bottle, and two cheap amazon.com Chinese burners for bottles to see if they are as good as the expensive stuff. I bet they work just as well. Heard recently of people getting lost in Wayne National Forest. Without planning or prep. Not a good idea. Found my old ALICE pack, and found a new frame locally. Still a good rig.
  19. I'm no expert, but I did google up this from the Ohio Bar: https://www.ohiobar.org/forpublic/resources/lawyoucanuse/pages/lawyoucanuse-689.aspx Sounds like your insurance company can pay the difference and make a claim against the other company or individual. IF you had UM (uninsured motorist). Results will vary, as always... edit: so I went back and looked, you had uninsured but not underinsured. Sounds like that is a grey area and costs extra with some companies.
  20. Orders and even responses get delayed. There's still a huge demand. It might take a few days to even see them acknowledge the order. Did they show on website how long the delay for delivery would be? It's still probably 2 or 3 weeks, I think. Remember last year it was 6 to 9 months. edit: Never dealt with K&B. So dunno what to expect.
  21. Ah yes, Katie Sunshine. (aka Hoopsie Daisy) Not formally trained or even part of a team. She taught herself. She's an art teacher in Arkansas, and here's one of her crazy ideas from last year.
  22. Things he did right: He unloaded and got off. Not very well, but he did. You do not want to roll with an 800-900 pound motorcycle.
  23. Are you sure you don't have a cousin that is a buffalo or something? lol Seriously, you can be both an immigrant and a citizen. (Or descendants of.) And an American if you want to be. The more of them we have, the better off we all are. And we can sing in any language we want, it's the thought that counts. Understood that some one won't like it. There always is. edit: And I don't like Coke anyway, except that Mexico Coke-Cola smuggled across the border...
  24. I think the SAS has an urban survival manual also.
